Prevention of Surgical Site Infection Literature Search Assignment

To narrow/broaden your search, remove the words qualitative and quantitative and include words that narrow or broaden your main topic. For example: Diabetes and pediatric and dialysis. To determine that research design was used, review the abstract and the methods section of the article. The author will provide a description of data collection using qualitative or quantitative methods.

Prepare this assignment according to the APA guidelines found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center. An abstract is not required.

This assignment uses a rubric. Please review the rubric prior to beginning the assignment to become familiar with the expectations for successful completion.

NRS 433V Week 1 Discussion 1

Identify two areas of nursing practice, which evidence-based practice has improved patient outcomes. State the study and its impact on patient care. How have these findings changed your nursing practice? Please support your response with a minimum of two supporting peer reviewed articles.

NRS 433V Week 1 Discussion 2

What similarities and differences can you identify between the nursing process and the research process? Explain your answer. Please support your response with a peer reviewed article.

Topic 1 DQ 1

The difference between a nursing and medical problem arise from the nature of assessment and application of research intervention. Imperatively, a nursing practice is one that occurs and can be identified during nursing assessments based on a patient’s condition or disease. A nursing practice problem ranges from patient care needs from the moment they step into a healthcare setting, during a physician diagnosis and the evaluation of the needs after care provision. The implication is that a nursing practice problem assessment needs a collection of comprehensive data on a patient for a nurse to have the right interventions and attain appropriate outcomes within a certain duration of care (Grand Canyon University, 2018).

On its part, a medical practice problem arises from a medical condition where a physician needs to develop interventions to help them in diagnosing a condition. For instance, a medical practice problem for a cancer misdiagnosis may arise as a medical practice problem since an oncologist may order for different diagnostic tests instead of the required ones. However, a nursing practice problem presented on a stroke diagnosis requires a nurse to have information on the patient’s pathology as well as risks for other conditions like falls and a more holistic understanding of the effect of stroke on the particular patient as well as family.

Imperatively, the PICOT framework offers nurses an opportunity to identify a population problem that requires effective intervention. The implication is that PICOT should be founded on a nursing practice problem to allow nurses understand the population and formulate effective intervention compared to others to deliver quality care outcomes (Melnyk et al., 2016). For instance, patients suffering from stroke have increased susceptibility for falls. As such, falls in patients is a problem that nurses must address in their practice to enhance patient satisfaction.

based practice (EBP) competencies in healthcare: a practical guide for improving quality, safety, and outcomes. Sigma Theta Tau.

PICOT is utilized by the health care community to identify and study a nursing or medical practice problem. Consequently, PICOT examples that may provide insight into the use of the PICOT process, may not be relevant to nursing practice as they are based on a medical practice problem.

Describe the difference between a nursing practice problem and a medical practice problem. Provide one example of each. Discuss why is it important to ensure your PICOT is based on a nursing practice problem.

Re: Topic 1 DQ 1

A nursing practice problem deals with a person’s response to health problems or possible health problems (NANDA International, n.d.). A nursing practice problem example would be teaching a patient who develops a deep vein thrombosis how to self-administer Lovenox. A medical practice problem deals more with the disease or the pathology behind the disease (NANDA International, n.d.). An example in this case would be the diagnosis of the deep vein thrombosis and deciding which anticoagulation therapy would be appropriate for the patient. The nursing problem is based upon the impact that the medical problem has on the patient.

Nursing care is based on evidence-based practice (EBP). Using EBP by providing patients with safe, quality care improves patient outcomes. It is important to ensure that PICOT is based on a nursing practice problem by asking background and foreground questions to format the PICOT question (Stillwell, Fineout-Overholt, et al., 2010). Using PICOT involves gathering information about the patient population, intervention or issue of interest, comparison of intervention or issue of interest, outcomes of interest and time it takes for the intervention to achieve the outcomes (Stillwell, Fineout-Overholt, et al., 2010). This information proves why the study should be done. By basing PICOT on a nursing practice problem, it ensures that the PICOT information includes the best evidence obtained from previous studies to determine improvement in interventions and education.
