How to Research and Prepare for NURS 8000 Discussion 1: Learning Online Week 2

Whether one passes or fails an academic assignment such as the Walden University NURS 8000 Discussion 1: Learning Online Week 2 depends on the preparation done beforehand. The first thing to do once you receive an assignment is to quickly skim through the requirements. Once that is done, start going through the instructions one by one to clearly understand what the instructor wants. The most important thing here is to understand the required format—whether it is APA, MLA, Chicago, etc.

After understanding the requirements of the paper, the next phase is to gather relevant materials. The first place to start the research process is the weekly resources. Go through the resources provided in the instructions to determine which ones fit the assignment. After reviewing the provided resources, use the university library to search for additional resources. After gathering sufficient and necessary resources, you are now ready to start drafting your paper.

How to Write the Body for NURS 8000 Discussion 1: Learning Online Week 2

After the introduction, move into the main part of the NURS 8000 Discussion 1: Learning Online Week 2 assignment, which is the body. Given that the paper you will be writing is not experimental, the way you organize the headings and subheadings of your paper is critically important. In some cases, you might have to use more subheadings to properly organize the assignment. The organization will depend on the rubric provided. Carefully examine the rubric, as it will contain all the detailed requirements of the assignment. Sometimes, the rubric will have information that the normal instructions lack.

Another important factor to consider at this point is how to do citations. In-text citations are fundamental as they support the arguments and points you make in the paper. At this point, the resources gathered at the beginning will come in handy. Integrating the ideas of the authors with your own will ensure that you produce a comprehensive paper. Also, follow the given citation format. In most cases, APA 7 is the preferred format for nursing assignments.

How to Write the Conclusion for NURS 8000 Discussion 1: Learning Online Week 2

After completing the main sections, write the conclusion of your paper. The conclusion is a summary of the main points you made in your paper. However, you need to rewrite the points and not simply copy and paste them. By restating the points from each subheading, you will provide a nuanced overview of the assignment to the reader.

NURS 8000 Discussion 1: Learning Online Week 2

This class could be a big adjustment for you being your first online course. Your strategies of planning and prioritizing will help you in your journey. I have some tips in getting started. Treat this course like any “real” course. You have to have discipline in taking online courses. It is easy to procrastinate and lose focus without self discipline. I recommend a calendar to help with time management. The way you schedule, plan, and implement strategies can greatly affect your academic achievements (Ahmad Uzir, 2020). Start with syllabus and mark your calendar for major assignments that you can work on a little over time. It is important to schedule out time for study time with reading. I find it helps to do a little each day, otherwise I get bored. I use my alarm to set reminders for due dates and certain tasks.

AS far as study groups, I think this is a great idea. I have tried it online and it is not for me. I preferred meeting in person was more beneficial for me. It is still a great way to meet others and get some studying in. It may not have worked for me but can for you. There are studies out there that show active participation with classmates helps with meeting goals (Ahmad Uzir, 2020). In groups, you can explain your thoughts and get feedback to help deepen your individual understanding. It can also build moral and keep things interesting.

Ahmad Uzir, N. B. (2020). Analytics of time management strategies in online learning environments : a novel methodological approach.

One of the strategies I implemented when enrolled in previous online learning environments was the ability to combine vision and execution. This skill is conducive to enhancing my ability to plan and time manage in each semester. By merging vision and execution, I can achieve and often surpass the course’s goals and set a coursework schedule that meshes with other obligations such as family and work. Organizing and balancing multiple schedules while also meeting the deadlines of the course have resulted in the completion of my online BSN and MSN degrees.

A strategy I could improve on is the ability to anticipate and mitigate pitfalls. I have previously set ambitious goals for myself and thus far have been able to achieve them due to my strong sense of persistence; however, when I don’t plan for probable pitfalls it usually results in lack of sleep and increased stress. As written by Zangerle (2021), “Many of you work in care settings that never close or are open for the majority of any 24-hour period. This contributes to long hours at work, many of which are scheduled and structured and some that aren’t… it’s those nonstructured hours that can derail your day. She encourages her students to expect the unexpected and learn to manage these derailers of time.”

One recurring example would be knowingly planning time to complete an assignment after a scheduled leadership forum at work. Roughly 50% of these forums result in aggressive action plans for fast-approaching deadlines to resolve organization-wide issues. Despite this probable pitfall, I still schedule the assignment time knowing it will be in addition to another project and create competing priorities.

By analyzing my schedules and proactively planning for pitfalls, I can then create mitigation strategies to avoid the negative consequences of these obstacles. A mitigation strategy for the mentioned example would be setting time earlier in the week to complete my assignment versus using my usual weekend days. This response may result in the need for flexing down an hour of work before leadership forum day or getting up an hour earlier to create uninterrupted time.

This is insightful Lindsay, time management, organization of resources, as well as the combination of vision and execution is necessary for the success of an individual. These approaches are necessary in planning for the success in the learning processes. The combination or merging of vision and execution often ensure that an individual remains on course of achieving successful outcomes in the learning processes (Zangerle, 2021). Vision enables an individual to focus on their responsibilities in different operational processes.

Through planning and vision, an individual is able to surpass their intended achievements or objectives. The success in the academic programs is also dependent on the setting flexible schedules that allows an individual to meet deadlines and ensure that every work or assignment is successfully accomplished (Walden University, n.d). Additionally, organizing and balancing multiple schedules while also meeting the deadlines of the course have resulted in the completion of my online BSN and MSN degrees.

Thanks a lot for sharing the strategies you intend to use and make your online educational program a success. Indeed, one of the pillars of successful online learning is time management (Pérez-Álvarez et al., 2017). Properly managing an individual’s time requires a lot of discipline since, as opposed to physical learning, no one may be there to regularly check-in and ensure that you are on track. It is therefore important that a leaner leverages his/her time management skills. I am impressed by the fact that you have a strategy to deal with distractions which usually eats on precious study time.

Coming up with a schedule is vital, but as I pointed out, discipline is key (Martin & Bolliger, 2019). When it comes to making schedules, one activity that has been of help to me is identifying major or key assignments beforehand and regularly check my workload. I then mark them on my calendar and continue checking to keep on track and know the amount of workload I should be having in the coming weeks. With such information in mind, I would then successfully perform my tasks in time.

Among the strategies that I consider most important is staying connected. Online learning can be a lonely exercise as, in most cases, there is no meeting with peers to discuss face-to-face matters regarding the course content and how to do better (Kahn et al., 2017). I believe that making an effort to know fellow classmates through online learning forums and social media platforms could be key. Building such a learning relationship can effectively be done through the online discussion boards by making efforts to answer engaging questions and giving respectful answers to the peers’ questions. Peers’ answers can turn out to be a valuable resource in answering class assignments and while preparing for examinations.

Historical Success

In an online educational program, there are many strategies one must develop to be successful. Time management is one of the most important strategies for me. Distractions can derail ones focus and lead to failure. Time management is complex with all the competing factors in the busyness of life. In a traditional setting, class time is offered on campus at a specific time there is a clearly defined classroom and base to start the learning process. In the online classroom, the flexibility requires one to engage with increased frequency (Alvarez Sainz et al., 2019). While the flexibility can be helpful, it also requires dedication to manage successfully. One strategy I have used in the past is to write out my schedule and plan my class time in a way like my undergraduate studies where I have a schedule that required me to be in specific rooms on campus. Time blocking is what I currently use and have found helpful. To time block, one simply creates immovable blocks within their schedule. As work arrival times are fixed for many, the same dedication is needed for success in an advanced degree setting. Making a list of the items I need to accomplish and establishing a time to complete each component has been helpful.

Anticipated Success

A new strategy I look forward to trying is the effective use of technology. I have found I often get pulled away by my phone and how it allures me to look at it each time it makes a noise. To minimize the distraction of my phone I am planning on silencing my phone during my devoted time blocks to ensure I am less distracted. Using the “do not disturb” setting will help ensure my eyes are not pulled to my phone. Technology overload is common in our world today (Orhan et al., 2021). While I expect this to help, I know myself and will also need to put the phone in another room to ensure I do not carelessly pick it up and venture down a rabbit hole only to find I have wasted the hour I set aside to accomplish a task. Knowing weaknesses and strengths of oneself is imperative. Learning daily areas one can improve will allow for adjustments that will lead to great success.

Conclusion

Success in any educational endeavor is complex. Current world situations with lockdowns, limitations on group meetings and life fluctuations are requiring agile mindsets for many. The flexibility of online education is great for social distancing and ensures educational endeavors can continue without major interruption. With this flexibility comes responsibility and establishing a robust plan will improve the likelihood of successful completion. Time management allows for balance in life and a favorable outcome.

One of the skills I am using now as a Family Nurse Practitioner is planning. Planning helps me to organize my work for the next day and to achieve the desired goal at the end of my shift. It involves creating and maintaining a plan by using psychological aspects that require actual conceptual professional skills.

As nurses, we strive to give patient-centered care and work in line with the best evidence-based practice to provide health and wellbeing for our patients, profession, and families.   We provide an assessment that gives us an opportunity for subsequent planning that ultimately benefits our patients. This gives an appropriate vision that increases our productivity as health care professionals (Britton, 2017).

I used these four strategies to plan my day of NURS 8000 Discussion 1: Learning Online Week 2; first I determine the strategic position, secondly, I prioritize my objectives, thirdly, how the plan is managed and executed, and finally, review and review the plan. By the end of the planning, my mission, vision, and goals are achieved. Also, it is vital to reevaluate your priorities and strategic positions to make sure that you stay on track for success in the long term. Health care professionals need to understand that planning successfully can be overwhelming but it is necessary to strategize the plan to develop a realistic goal or success (Carlson & DelGrosso, 2021).

I believe that using effective technology that I have not tried will be beneficial in my strengths and weaknesses. Effective technology will provide an appropriate plan that is easier, faster, and more efficient in communication. It helps in developing new techniques and providing better productivity and satisfaction to workers in an organization.  Weaknesses in using technology are loneliness and distractions that occur in the workplace. Some of the effective use of technology that nurses use are pagers, bar code scanners for medications, and smartphones for communicating with the doctors; which are all efficient devices use in the hospitals to help facilitate things in the workplace (Ray, 2016).

Hello Dorathy,

I am impressed by your discussion post concerning making your work as a family nurse practitioner a success. Indeed, due to various complexities involved, an individual must be prudent enough to come up with strategies that will help him/her go around or over the potential barriers (Copanitsanou et al., 2017). As you have stated, planning is one of the most powerful strategies. While some may actively and consciously plan for a days or a week’s activities, other people do plan but unconsciously without giving it much thought (Aasmul et al. 2018). However, the fact remains that everyone usually does some kind of planning. I believe that the process of planning should start as early as possible. For instance, as a Family Nurse Practitioner, the hospital facility requires that the nurse follows a routine in place. Such routines are to help the hospital as a whole to achieve the ultimate goal of ensuring that the patients get the best services for improved patient security and outcomes. Therefore, if a nurse fails to plan his/her day and weeks, then the result could be conflicts with the hospital management and even with the patients.

Thanks to technology and technological advancements, the daily work of a nurse can be made easier and, as you have noted, engage in faster, easier, and more efficient communication. Central to the use of technology should be the aim of improving patient outcomes (Bruce, 2018). One common misconception about using technology in the healthcare setting is that it can replace human resources. The truth is, technology should be used to complement the activities performed in ensuring that the patients get better services and improved patient outcomes (Daly Lynn et al., 2019). One thing I have always loved is to keep learning about the technological trends and how best they can be used in my areas of specialization to make my services better and better. Even though it’s a bit challenging, I believe that with a little more effort, we can afford to stay in front of the queue.

While some may actively and consciously plan for a day’s or a week’s activities, other people do planning but unconsciously without giving it much thought (Aasmul et al.

Describe one strategy that you have used in the past (academically or professionally) that has empowered you in terms of one or more of the following skill sets: planning, time management, studying, and effective technology use. Explain how this strategy has been advantageous.

Evaluate a strategy that you have yet to try but believe would be beneficial given your strengths and weaknesses.

Utilizing time-management skills enables a professional to achieve daily responsibilities quickly and efficiently. Different techniques are helpful when developing time-management skills. Effective time management necessitates strong planning skills and an understanding of what one’s duties are when creating task schedules (Career Guide, 2021). Students who attend online orientations before the start of their classes have a much more enjoyable and fruitful online learning experience (Walden University, 2021)

Competency in technology will allow one to be efficient in completing tasks. Procuring strong internet searching skills and information evaluation skills will help complete and streamline assignments. Reading through the entire course syllabus and understand what is expected (Walden University, 2021). Being organized and planning tasks ahead of time; developing a schedule for completion is essential and has been helpful in the past.

Prioritizing tasks will assist in completing essential tasks more efficiently. Assigning a priority to specific tasks will help focus efforts on the tasks that are most important. Logging in every day is also an excellent strategy to keep focused and ensure that assignments are being completed accordingly. (Walden University, 2021).

Furthermore, understanding my stress levels has effectively helped with lowering stress and allowed me to stay focused and not be overwhelmed. Establishing defined goals such as completing a specific task is an essential part of managing my time. Setting realistic goals and ideal goals have worked for me in the past by allowing me to feel accomplished throughout the day as a source of enthusiasm and encouragement (Career Guide, 2021).

A strategy that I have not tried but believe would be beneficial given my strengths and weaknesses would be to have a nice treat for myself that does not compete with my everyday productivity. It will help me relax and stay inspired to improve my time management skills.

RE: Discussion 1 – Week 2 Collapse

It is essential to have good study habits when pursuing higher education. Well-established study habits prepare students for success. Hunt (2021, April) commented that strategies developed over the years are often complicated by demanding work schedules as well as biological fluctuations. Most students seeking higher levels of learning often must incorporate work and home life. This can present as a challenge or even discouraging to some. To make matters even more complicated, the uses of technology and online learning have become popularized. A study in 2013 showed of students enrolled in high learning at least 32 % took at least one online course (as cited in Uljana and Luo, 2019). This data was not very surprising to me. However, in the Fall of 2014 there were roughly 5.8 million online learners which increase by 7 % from the previous two years (as cited in Uljana and Luo, 2019). With knowing, the use of technology is here to stay. I found the document, within the course, outlining the need for a technology contingency plan interesting. A technology contingency plan will give you quick access to technology resources in the event of a technology emergency.

Sample Response for NURS 8000 Discussion 1: Learning Online Week 2

Tish,

There are so many things a student can do to ensure their success. I cannot stress enough the importance of getting a writing program or, better yet, use the resources provided by the Walden Writing Center, who will actually edit some of your work and identify where you have areas of needed improvement. Writing is probably the biggest area I find where students are not prepared for doctoral work.

Also, I learned the hard way that it is important you use a virus protection plan like Norton and then back everything up in their backup system. You only have to log in to your account and you can get the documents you need if your computer tanks. The other strategy that worked for me when I was going to school is making sure your significant other understands the commitment you are about to undertake. Not only are you going to depend upon them for emotional support, but they need to recognize that it is a mutual goal for you to earn your degree and will, at times, make sacrifice on their parts also. I think it is important to let them know upfront, and get a commitment, that they are willing to help with laundry, doing activities with the kids, clean the house, or even prepare meals at times when you are under a lot of stress or deadlines. I have seen some students who did not prepare their loved ones, and then shoulder the blame when they felt they had to put school above other commitments on those instances when they had no wiggle room in turning something in.

Hope this is helpful!

Dr. Harvey
