I want to start off by saying that you are a rock-star and a great example for your kids! Kudos to you for getting back in the classroom. To me, you are definitely already meeting the program outcome of being a lifelong learner to advance your nursing career! I appreciate your words on the overlooked mental health exacerbations as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. It feels like everyday nurses, physicians, children, students, and many others are at a war with themselves and others because the pandemic is still occurring. I wish you all the best on your journey to improve mental health for benefit of society. We truly need nurses who are passionate about mental health – the psychosocial assessment is such a key piece that is overlooked on patient physical assessment. Internal and external stressors are more present now that COVID-19 has affected socioeconomic status, housing, the ability to purchase food and medications, and more.
I feel that networking will never be the same after COVID-19. Telehealth is more prominent because of social distancing and I have seen interviews and health care delivered via Zoom or Webex platforms. The digital age is upon us and I feel that having social media, such as a website, LinkedIn or Facebook would be an excellent opportunity for you to find potential preceptors and other nurses who share similar views about health care!

Yes, I can definitely relate to your journey on recognizing the mental health crisis in this country and the uphill battle we have to combat the stigmatism associated with having a “diagnosis”. For me, working in Flint MI during the water crisis leading into the COVID pandemic these mental health “doughnut holes” became all too evident. “Stigma can lead to discrimination. Discrimination may be obvious and direct, such as someone making a negative remark about your mental illness or your treatment. Or it may be unintentional or subtle, such as someone avoiding you because the person assumes you could be unstable, violent or dangerous due to your mental illness” (MayoClinic.org, 2017). Walden’s mission and goal statement that you cited “Walden’s mission and goals statements reference the need for critical thinking and professional excellence in order to impact positive social change” (Walden, 2021a), I take as a call to action to mitigate this stigma, educate patients, families and communities, and effect that social change.

Networking: A Road Map to My Professional Goal.
Walden University’s Motto, “Education for Good” (https://class.waldenu.edu), sums up the Vision, Mission, and Goals of an academic pursuit from the University, and in turn, reflects my prospective personal outcome at the end of this program.
My name is Ngozi M Onwumelu, and I am an Alumnae of this great University. I graduated in 2017 with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing with a focus on acute care. It took me a few years to come back for my Master’s Program due to some critical personal events in my life, which have helped further define my reasons for this program.
I am an immigrant from Nigeria, and a few months before my migration, my father-in-law fell down the stairs and fractured his right hip. With no knowledge of nursing or health care experience, I could do nothing but watch as that great man slowly declined in health and mental wellbeing to his eventual demise. During my Bachelors in Nursing (BSN) program, I lost my mother to a series of complex health issues complicated by the state of health care in my native country. To say I was heartbroken would be an understatement. With the knowledge I had acquired through my few years of nursing, I knew that I could have provided her better care than she got and perhaps given her a chance to say a proper goodbye to her children and loved ones. And so I made up my mind to further my nursing career, not just for my glory or acquisition but for the greater good of society, which comprises multiples “Mothers and Fathers-in-law.”
Walden University sees (the Vision) a community of scholars who, through the practical application of their knowledge to solve present societal problems and transform their immediate communities, are deemed worthy of their degrees. (Walden University. (n.d.), and thereby provides an opportunity (the Mission) for a broad group of career professionals to develop themselves into expert practitioners who can cause a change for the better in the societies they serve (Walden University. (n.d.).
The University put in place specific goals through which it achieves its Vision and Mission, and they include but are not limited to these three: –
• Provision of multi-contextual educational opportunities for career learners.
• Provision of programs through a diverse learning process – all resulting in quality integrity-infused outcomes.

As a scholar, my personal and academic goals align with the program outcome of the University. A healthy community is vital to the health of the nation and the world as a whole. Care coordination through prevention of acute diseases and management of chronic ones provides an opportunity for a healthier community and aligns with my goal. My professional goal is to become that scholar-practitioner whose focus is on primary care. With close monitoring of the health status of my patient population through screening and management of health conditions, I can affect a positive change in my immediate community of older adults and geriatric patients. Walden University allows me to attain my academic goal of lifelong learning with the view of translating the knowledge gained through my academic pursuit into professional practice towards providing evidence-based care through the continuum of care for my adult/geriatric population.
The achievement of professional and academic goals involves collaboration with other professionals through networking and the development of professional relationships. According to Stacie Perry in the Laureate Education video, it takes a village to be a nurse. Cashidhe Kowalczyk (Laureate Education video) stated that networking and connecting with other professionals provide students with support and mentorship opportunities and structure to give the feeling of community and not feel alone (Laureate Education Video, 2018). Kyle Schmidt, in his blog on bluepipes.com, stated about five benefits of networking, and they include:
• Avenues for finding jobs – a study attributed toYale, and Cornell Universities stated that 70% of most jobs are found through networking.
• Advancement in career through acquired knowledge and experience gained from conferences and professional associations
• Garnering professional references for verification of integrity in professional practice
• Providing a support system for each other in the demanding health care environment.

As I contemplated my specialty for the MSN program, I was conflicted between choosing Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) Versus Adult/Geriatric Nurse Practitioner (AGNP). There is a perception in the natural practical world that AGNP finds it challenging to obtain a job, whereas FNP is highly sought after. Professor Fozia Ferozali said that this MSN Program becomes what you make of it (Laureate Education video). With networking, I agree that my professional goal depends on the relationships and collaborations I make now. I am now prepared to establish a network of peers and mentors whose specialty is AGNP who can help and support my professional goals. In this 21st century, networking seems to be the norm, be it social networking or professional networking.
With the World Wide Web and internet access, reaching out is now a click away. Professional networking can be done through social media, apps, professional groups (who, by the way, now meet online), and the old-fashioned “Meet and Greet” conferences. Walden university’s Facebook page, its Alumnae group, the nursing associations such as the American Association of Nurse Practitioners, National Association of Orthopaedic Nurses (Nurse.org.) are but a few of the groups I intend to network with during this period.
Bearing my goals in mind, I will be reaching out and establishing professional relationships with my team of experienced colleagues and mentors as I work my way through this program to ensure that at the end of it, I have acquired not just professional skills but also that I have a network of professional colleagues who will act as mentors, referrals, and support persons as we all work towards the better good of our patients and the communities.

I have been a nurse for almost 20 years and all along, I have always known and felt a vacuum in my career line which I have decided to fill up now. My goal in this program is to advance myself academically and professionally and be able to offer state of art mental health services in the area of prevention, diagnosis, and treatment to my immediate community and the other American population as a whole as incorporated in the vision of Walden University (Walden University, 2021). This informed my search for a credible but flexible school. I searched for a while for a school that would assist me actualize my goal until my friend told me of Walden University even though she was not their student. She said that Walden has a good reputation in online study.
The Healthy People 2030 goals has mental health related objectives including increasing the proportion of adult with depression and serious mental illness that receive treatment and increasing primary care visits where they are screened for depression (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, n.d.). On the other hand, 77% of the counties in U.S. are faced with severe mental health providers shortage (The National Council of Behavioral Health, 2018). With this shortage which is inadvertently increasing with a projection of 45,000 mental health professionals by 2025, it becomes imperative to relieve this shortage by adding to the quota (The National Center for Health Workforce Analysis, 2016). This has informed my zeal to advance my nursing career in the area of psychiatry and mental health.
Social Change Incorporation
Looking at the University vision and mission statement, it conformed with my goal of becoming a scholar practitioner (Walden University, 2021). I know that I would be fulfilled, learning from and with other professionals and as a result effect a great and positive change in my community. The Master of Science in Nursing would prepare, mold and give me a sense of autonomy in my chosen field and make me to stand out amongst others in offering evidence based and quality care to meet the mental health needs of my patients. In line with the MSN learning outcome, at the time of my graduation, I would be better equipped to deliver high quality healthcare, reducing disparity in access to specialist nursing care by assessing, diagnosing, implementing and evaluating care strategies (Walden University, 2021). The knowledge that I would garner in this program would shape me to be effective and audience-oriented in my communication of professional and specialist nursing care via spoken, written and information technology.
I am Kathrine Deedon, I currently live in Dayton, Ohio and I have been practicing as a Registered Nurse in step down units for the past 12 years. I have an 8 year daughter and a 3 year old dog. My daughter is my motivation in everything that I do and I strive to be better for her and of course for myself. I have begun this journey to challenge myself and to progress in my Nursing career. I am excited to become a Family Nurse Practitioner. I have been at the bedside for 12 years and I have learned a lot. I believe that the wealth of knowledge and experience that I have gained from my practice definitely will help me to be the best Family Nurse Practitioner that I can be. I have a desire to help others in need and to provide a safe space for them.
My professional and academic goals are in sync with Walden’s vision, mission, goals and social change initiatives. For example, I believe that diversity is essential in achieving my goals. We all bring something different to the table and I believe that bringing our different ideas and perspectives can bring positive change. I also strive to be a life-long learner and furthering my education is one way I can continue that journey. Walden university will help me achieve my professional goals by preparing me academically with the tools and knowledge I need to become the best Nurse Practitioner that I can be.
My definition of success may differ from my classmates and colleagues but I think the foundation of success is similar across the board. I want to be able to graduate with my degree as well as pass boards so that I can ultimately practice as a family nurse practitioner once I graduate. Some of my examples of success include: learning something new from the class, passing the class and ultimately learning how I can use what is taught in my classes in my practice. Another example of success to me is when the lightbulb goes off in my head and I get the Eureka! moment. Also, success to me is for my daughter to see me graduate and receive my degree.
I find that it is very important to network with other professionals in my field to be able to succeed because the field of nursing is always changing. As a healthcare professional, I believe that our ultimate goal should be to provide high-quality care to our patients. We cannot do this alone and we must work together. Specifically I think that it is important to network with other Nurse Practitioners, Physicians Assistants and Medical Doctors so that I can learn what they have gone through to get where they are at in their career. They have a wealth of knowledge that I find to be valuable and beneficial to my learning.
Healthcare is fluid and books can only prepare so much. We need hands-on experience to be able to learn, grow, and succeed in the field of nursing and healthcare. By networking, we can build the relationships we need with with other members of the healthcare team. The relationships that I form can ultimately help me with finding someone who is willing to teach me and take me under his or her wing during my practicum. I will be able to form rapport and trust between myself and other leaders in healthcare. Networking is essential in becoming the Family Nurse Practitioner that I strive to become. Humans by nature thrive on relationships and I think that networking will also help me along in my journey because I will also build friendships along the way. I know that I will benefit from networking and being able to bounce my ideas back and forth between my colleagues. I also believe that there is strength in numbers.
I have been a nurse for five years. I started my career as a neuro med surg nurse where I quickly learned neuro was more than just dealing with the nervous system. There were some patients that dealt with psychology issues as well. The last four years of my nursing career I did travel nursing to different states, as well as locally. During this journey I learned patient care does not change, and do to the pandemic more people are dealing with psych issues. My long term professional goal is to become a Mental Health Nurse Practitioner.
I participated in the AIM program at Walden which involved me getting my BSN degree with the completion of 3 Master classes. To reach this goal I just remained active and did not take any breaks to achieve this professional goal. As stated in Walden vision statement nursing, health, and related sciences will transform the provision of nursing services along the continuum of care and across the human life span to meet the needs of individuals and local and global communities. (2021a) I believe this is true. I have taken everything I have learned in previous courses with this university and use the knowledge I gained in my everyday nursing.
Since I am a returning Walden University student, I believe the mission speak value within itself, you do not just obtain knowledge you also utilize it in your everyday advanced profession as well, this is why I continued to further my education at this facility.
Incorporation of Social Change
In addition, Walden supports positive social change through the development of principled, knowledgeable, and ethical scholar-practitioners, who are and will become civic and professional role models by advancing the betterment of society (Walden University, 2021b, para. 4) I plan on becoming a mental health nurse practitioner and working in a practice where I am able to utilize my skills that obtain from this program. I hope to educate the community and be the resource for other communities. I also would not mind doing some telehealth for healthcare facilities.

I see that we share the same psychiatric nurse background and goal of becoming a PMHNP. Networking and connecting with other professionals are essential to professional development. As you mentioned, technology makes networking more accessible, especially for those like myself, who may find networking daunting. I have done some networking in terms of collecting contacts, forming nursing friendships, and making inquiries here and there; however, that has been the extent of my networking.

Professional nursing practice helps offer the chance to registered nurses to increase their professional networking lengths. This in turn enhances their educational and professional practice while protecting their various roles within the set nurse practitioner roles through aspects such as mentorship (Nowell et al., 2017). I formerly attained educational honors that range from being a Registered Nurse, Leadership and Service, together with a BSN in Nursing. I have vast experience having practiced in various facilities that range from Puritt Corporation Albany, GA (2011-2013), Epic Health Services: Houston Texas (2013-present), and Westoaks Psychiatric Hospital (2017-present). These professional aspects have also been in line with the underlying required clinical expectations significant for the upholding of professional practice for overall patient satisfaction (Goolsby & Dubois, 2017).
Walden’s vision, mission, goals as well as social change call for the upholding of professional educational principles within professional nursing practice within the learning community enabled by experience (Sinanan, 2018). This in turn generates a social change idealism that enables registered nurses to effectively apply what is being learned within the clinical settings while seeking to be scholar-practitioners, for effective problem-solving. (Brown & Baltes, 2017). The associated Walden MSN program outcomes together with standpoints also associate with the enactment of formal, scientific research supported by educational awareness within a set learning community for enhancing educational and clinical knowledge in the goal for the realization of scholar-practitioner roles (Barnes-Holmstrom, 2018).
The link between Walden MSN Program outcomes and viewpoints within professional practice and the need for attaining a scholar-practitioner role helps uphold the aspect of positive social change by empowering nurses’ professionalism as they are key to responding to clinical situations with the best possible scientifically proven plans for improving patient care within the challenging settings (Clarke, 2020). This aspect also encompasses adaptability to various educational settings that are also vastly distributed, while taking into consideration ethical as well as legal necessities.
