Improving oneself is a never-ending task, there is always something new to learn and enhance. “Building your talents into real strengths requires practice and hard work, much like it does to build physical strengths” (Rath, 2007, p. 19). Transformational leadership is bringing people with different abilities to work together, inspiring each other, and helping each other achieve.
I think that in doing so it helps individuals develop skills already learned and individualizing it to one’s own capability. Learning my strengths gives me motivation to enhance them and hope I can motivate my coworkers to do so as well. “People who are valued, encouraged, supported, and provided with the environment and resources to succeed will take initiative and perform creatively and effectively (Broome & Marshall, 2021, p. 186).
I also like to bring positivity to work and I feel that it makes work more enjoyable. Even in rough situations, we can talk and laugh about it later. It helps relieve stress. I find that it also helps to vent when situations get out-of-hand. Sometimes you need a moment to step aside and get all the negativity out. It is great to have coworkers that encourage you to do better and support you. I have had days when I felt less enthusiastic about completing my work, but I have been fortunate to work with coworkers that have helped me grow and learn more about my strengths and weaknesses.

helps you practice and improve your skills as a leader. Sherrod, Holland & Battle (2018), stated that characteristics of a preceptor
should include “experience, positive attitude, emotional intelligence, patience, caring, ability to evaluate performance, and
potential for providing effective feedback”. Acting as a preceptor, requires skills of a leader which means you already have
experience in this area. Preceptors play significant roles in helping a organization move toward a vision or goal by motivating
others to change. Rather than instilling fear of reprimand by enforcing policy, preceptors have ability to create change through
influence from building trusting relationships with orientee and others (Sherrod, Holland, Battle, 2018). Utilizing your role as
preceptor can help you enhance your ability to perform as leader in your future practitioner role.

No matter how much I may feel I deserve a day of rest, if the day passes without some form of achievement, no matter how small, I will feel dissatisfied. I have an internal fire burning inside me. It pushes me to do more, to achieve more. After each accomplishment is reached, the fire dwindles for a moment, but very soon it rekindles itself, forcing me toward the next accomplishment. My relentless need for achievement might not be logical. It might not even be focused. But it will always be with me.

In truth, altruism is defined as the act of caring for others without expecting anything in return. Altruistic action is driven by care for others or by internalized ideals, aspirations, and self-benefits rather than by a desire for tangible or social rewards or to avoid punishment.

Humanistic care and altruism are connected to empathy in that, after understanding another person’s circumstances, one is more likely to engage in an act of kindness and experience enjoyment as a consequence. Empathy is a prerequisite for charity. In other words, before engaging in a beneficial activity, one must be able to empathize with another.
Briefly describe two strengths in nursing leadership
Compassion and empathy. These skills may be used by nurse leaders not just while dealing with patients, but also when working with and training other nurses. Compassion and empathy enhance training and team communication while also assisting nurse leaders in understanding and reducing nursing job pressures. Also, the capacity to motivate, inspire, and engage nursing staff are leadership strengths in nursing which will drive health care personnel to collaborate in order to maximize their potential and achieve organizational goals. Nurses with high self-efficacy are more engaged in interprofessional collaboration (Costanzo et al., 2019).
For me, the two strengths I’d like to improve myself are patience and resistance to stress. Patience is essential when defining what true leadership skills are all about. If our direct reports show signs of strain or uncertainty, we need to be able to support them, not get irritated. If we think about what patience is, it’s having the ability to stay calm in the face of disappointment, adversity, or distress. Nurses who have a high sense of self-efficacy and patience are more likely to engage in interprofessional teamwork (Costanzo et al., 2019). As Maslach in one of the studies posted in the National Library of Medicine, stress creates Burnout over time, which is described as a psychological response to prolonged pressures by three independent but linked dimensions: emotional weariness, cynicism or depersonalization, and a perceived lack of personal success. (Maslach, C., Schaufeli, W. B., & Leiter, M. P, 2001). Being your best self means playing to your strengths at work and everywhere else (Gallup, 2019)

The Gallup Organization is a company that has developed a program determining individuals’ themes, traits, strengths, and behaviors in order to develop strategies to meet and exceed the demands of their careers, daily lives, and their families (Gallup, 2018). According to the StrengthsFinder assessment, completed through Gallup (2018), my themes included achiever, developer, empathy, consistency, and arranger. The traits of an achiever are one who has stamina and is a hard worker taking great satisfaction from being busy and productive. For an achiever, every day starts at zero and by the end of the day, you must achieve something tangible to feel good about yourself.
A developer is an individual who sees the potential in people. When working with others your goal is to help them succeed and you look for ways to challenge and teach them. You take satisfaction in seeing their improvements and people come to you knowing you enjoy helping them. Those with empathy are intuitive to others’ emotions and are aware of those around them. Due to this intuition, you are able to see the world through their eyes. Those with consistency traits feel balance is important. You are aware of the need to treat people the same, no matter their station in life. Having a consistent environment where rules are clear and applied to everyone equally is important to you, making sure it is predictable and fair. Finally, the arranger’s characteristics are those of a conductor. I am one that likes organization and functions best without clutter and disorganization. When in a complex situation with many factors, I can manage the variables and arrange the variables in a more productive way. “Working smarter not harder” is a good motto. This allows me to be very flexible and roll with changes easily.
Core Values, Two Strengths, Two Characteristics to Improve
Two core values I want to strengthen are health and learning. While I am healthy, I have habits I would like to improve upon, to be more self-assured and confident. For example, consistency with exercise and eating habits. While I am an achiever, I am also lazy when it comes to certain things such as reading educational materials. Being a life-long learner is a goal I am working on currently and want to continue after school is completed.
Two strengths I would like to improve on are focus and discipline. Examples of incorporating discipline would be consistent exercise and implementing a healthier eating plan. Being focused, in which you need a clear destination and includes asking yourself every day, “where am I headed” (Rath, 2007). An example of this is being ‘focused’ on schoolwork and working daily toward completion and future goals.
Two characteristics I would like to improve upon are developing resolution skills and situational awareness. While I am aware of what is going on around me, I do not focus on other units, management, or administration. I believe this is detrimental to myself at times because I don’t see the whole picture. Also, I can improve on conflict resolution and further develop these skills. I am not a person who likes conflict and I try to avoid it. This is not realistic while in leadership positions. My leadership skills would be improved if I improved upon these skills.
Conclusion
Marshall & Brrome (2021) wrote that the first principle of leadership is to be grounded in a set of ethics or core values that guide human behaviors and actions. To be an effective leader, it is crucial to develop and improve upon important behaviors and characteristics becoming of a leader in order to lead with “grace and effectiveness (p. 8).” Effective leadership skills matter in creating and sustaining a healthy work environment (Shirey, 2009).

Healthcare is a people business with leadership that brings everyone together, creating an environment bringing all the various skill sets together to drive the organization forward. Within the healthcare industry, leaders are expected to play a significant role in the decision-making process. With access to data, the financial gain can be used to provide training and support employees’ development, which will safeguard against external setbacks (Duggan et al., 2015).
Best leaders are people who know what they are doing. They see things that need change and act with focus, energy, and direction (Walden University 2014). This discussion on evaluating one’s leadership skills and behaviors allowed me to complete Gallup’s Strengths Finder assessment and discover my top five themes Responsibility, Learner, Achiever, Belief, and Arranger (Rath 2017). The results reflect my personality and prompt me to leverage my talents for success. People need to recognize their skills, and personal assessments can be instrumental in reflecting on what is important to them to meet their leadership skills and feel accomplished.
Core values, Strengths, and characteristics
Belief and Arranger talents for strength are essential to excellence. Being happy with a good team getting my energy from my sense of mission and purpose, listening closely to hear others’ values connecting with people by beliefs, I can offer my natural insight into organization and arrangements to keep a group project moving towards its goal. Possessing the Responsible trait, I would need to strengthen this in my leadership role as I could take on more than I can handle; I must learn to manage this talent by deciding what I must stop doing if I take on a new responsibility. Also, being a learner indicates my love for learning and that the outcome may not matter to me, which could result in unfinished projects.
However, having Achiever as a trait is reassuring that my learner trait can make me more productive and purposeful. It explains how I feel fulfilled by meeting my daily goals and bringing meaning to life. Gallup (n.d.) suggests defining my beliefs in more positive ways focusing on what I am for rather than what I am against, will help me be perceived positively, so I would like to brush up on being focused and be an influencer which is essential to influence others within the team to make my talents productive and purposeful. However, the main principle of leadership remains to influence people to accomplish goals through vision, communication, and motivation with values of honesty, loyalty, and fairness (Ghorbani et al., 2023).
Conclusion
Self-reflecting tools are essential to understand one’s skills in collecting qualitative and quantitative information on one’s leadership styles. Broom & Marshall (2021) summarize how self-motivated individuals can make decisions to accomplish set goals. Every individual is different. I have always been skeptical of personality tests because of how broad the provided information is. This test was no exception, and it was mostly a compilation of the answers that I already gave. Nobody is born with excellent leadership skills; all prominent qualities can be used to become great leaders. A leader focuses on maximizing his strengths and working on his weaknesses. The five qualities received in the report are as follows: competition, deliberate, significance, focus, and command. According to the test, I prefer taking charge of projects, enjoying the good competition, and focusing on the purpose in my life.
I always look for two core values in people that I keep close to our responsibility and honesty. A great leader is not only found in a big company; a great leader can be a mom that raises her children or a coworker that knows how to schedule her time accordingly to be as productive as possible. Responsibility and honesty go hand in hand. I expect someone to take responsibility for their actions and be honest. Often, people run away from responsibilities by blaming their failures on the economy, their children, or their coworker that got the promotion instead of them. Responsibility is also a crucial quality to have as a medical practitioner.

Two strengths of mine are my ability to focus on problems and find a way to solve them and my so-called ‘cold-heartedness.’ At my current job, I’m great at finding solutions to problems, and I often find myself being the most productive when I have to do a lot of tasks. My second strength is keeping my work and personal life separate without letting one affect the other. I care a lot about patients, but I don’t get as affected as other nurses, which helps me stay on my task without feeling emotionally drained. There are so many ways a healthcare worker can experience work-related burdens that being a more reserved person helps more in the long run than being someone caring and empathetic. According to CDC, 22% of healthcare workers experience depression, anxiety, and PTSD. ( CDC, 2022)
Lastly, I would like to strengthen two characteristics: leaning more on my coworkers instead of working alone and being more patient. In healthcare, ]we all depend on each other making it crucial for everyone to have good communication skills. I find myself quite often short-tempered when it comes to teaching others, which I need to work on. There is an African quote that I love saying ” If you want to go fast, go alone. if you want to go far, go together.” Being team members and relying on each other is the key to success.

You mention courage as a strength you would like to build upon, courage is a great choice. As a leader you must have the courage to do what is right. I have had leaders in the past as an example, that would rarely confront nurses that made mistakes or did something wrong because that leader had a fear of confrontation. Moral courage is vital to providing patients with safe, quality care. Courage-based behavior in relation to moral courage gives nurses the ability to perform according to what is morally correct (Pakizekho & Barkhordari-Sharifabad, 2022).
The issues continued with these nurses, small mistakes, etc. due to the fear my nurse manager had of confronting others. This led to a high amount of stress on other nursing staff as well, now other nurses were constantly correcting mistakes to prevent serious issues because the issues were never addressed. As a leader these are things that you should want to address, being a courageous leader can make all the difference in patient care and staff satisfaction.
Having courage means having the ability to do something that frightens you. Of course you will feel fear, but having courage allows you to show strength when faced with fear. Moral courage is considered an ethical competence in healthcare, it can be defined as having the ability to overcome fear and stand up for core values. Being a courageous leader will enable you to support staff in being morally courageous. When nurses feel they cannot act according to their moral values they face moral distress. When nurses face this dilemma between what they are able to do and what they feel they should do, this distress leads to frustration, burnout, and eventually quitting (Konings et al., 2022).
I am a strong believer that we can always improve on something, and that does not mean what we already are is inadequate. Continue to build your courage and stand up for your core values. Be confident in yourself, when you know something is right, fight for it.

Students that use Clifton’s Strengths learn to be confident in who they are and what they can offer the world. Results
My top 5 hallmark themes out of the 34 themes evaluated are futuristic, restorative responsibility, learner, and belief. According to Gallop, these themes make up my top five skills and define who I am as a leader (Gallup, 2023).
Futuristic describes me as a dreamer who sees visions of the future and loves to peer over the horizon (Gallup Clifton Strength, 2023). The restorative theme describes me as someone who appreciates restoring things by figuring out their underlying issues and fixing them. Responsibility also fits me well. According to Gallup, this theme indicates that I accept responsibility for everything I commit to, which helps me establish a reputation as a reliable accomplisher. Learner describes me as a person who will always be drawn to the process of learning, which I do not agree with because I only like to learn about certain things that are of interest to me for me to engage in. The last theme, belief describes me as family-oriented, and spiritual, and value responsibility for myself as well as others which gives my life meaning and satisfaction.
Core Values
Responsibility and belief are two of my key elements that are openly acknowledged in my results. Whether it’s a dedication to a profession, friendship, or a task, I have genuine emotions about it. I take ownership of anything I commit to and am immensely proud of myself for doing so. When I think I’ve let someone down, I get very upset. My value of belief makes me an easy person to put trust and considered dependable.
Strengths
My confidence and time management abilities are two positive traits I want to enhance. As nurses are required to fulfill numerous activities in a particular time frame, time management is essential. Even though I believe I have a solid grasp of what it takes to engage in effective time management, I am aware that I can still do better.
Characteristics
Based on my findings, I would like to improve my responsibility and learner skills. I believe I need to focus on reinforcing these traits, though. Instead, I need to be able to pinpoint when such motivations take precedence over my capacity to say time out when there are excessive expectations put on my schedule. My ability to refuse is not always sturdy. My drive to learn and sense of responsibility is the cause. I want to put my attention on creating attainable outcomes and delineating limits that are beneficial for myself and my welfare.

Introduction
Influential leaders guarantee that a healthcare system can always provide patients safe and efficient care (Xu, 2020). Often, nurses are given leadership opportunities such as delegating to unlicensed personnel, mentoring new nurses, and the unit-charged nurse, all without being taught leadership skills. Therefore, it is essential that individuals understand their strengths and behaviors and how they impact their daily lives. In doing so, individuals can gain insight into themselves, leading to tremendous leadership success. The purpose of this discussion post is to review the results of my StrengthsFinder assessment and the two core characteristics, ands, and two strengths I would like to improve.
Strength Finder Assessment
The Strength Finder assessment results showed my top five: Harmony, Responsibility, Includer, consistency, and Relator. This assessment confirmed multiple traits I already know. For example, such as Harmony does not enjoy conflict, needs things to be ordered, enjoys planning, enjoys being people, and is a keen observer of others. However, the assessment also showed me some things I needed to learn about myself, such as being an Includer and carrying people along no matter who they are. Being religiously raised, it was inevitable that core values drive work and drive how I go about life. I am a person who likes to finish what I start no matter how long it takes and avoid confrontation unless inevitable.
Values, Strengths, and Characteristics
One core value I wish to strengthen is based on the results of my assessment relator. The assessment probe is open to meeting new people. According to Aerate Inc (2018), expanding friendship groups/ meeting new people can lead to learning about events, career paths, and job opportunities. I am currently working on strengthening this value in my new career, will meet new people, and will make new friendships.
Another core value I wish to improve is consistency. As the assessment pointed out, I thrive on routine, order, and having things planned out. Nursing is a profession where things such as the plan of care, discharge plan, and many other things constantly change throughout the day. Adapting to these changes and programs developing a new program is essential for nurses, especially those in leadership positions. The two strengths that I wish to strengthen our Harmony and Responsibility. Harmony acknowledges my dislike for confrontation and how I seek to find areas of agreement. Responsibility is often viewed as a goal-getter. However, it can establish clear lines of thought and allow direct communication between multiple individuals (Deveaux, 2019).
Leaders must master this skill to develop conflict resolution for themselves and their employees. The discipline strength looks at my ability to focus on deadlines and routines. According to Journey to Leadership (2019), leaders use self-discipline to improve decision-making skills, gain respect from others, and lead by example. Focusing on deadlines and timelines is an essential skill that leaders must achieve because organizational goals will go unmet without them.
Conclusion
Effective leadership is necessary for a profession to flourish; successful and knowledgeable leaders are vital in all disciplines, especially in today’s healthcare environment (Deveaux, 2019). A good nurse leader can inspire others to work together to pursue a common goal, such as enhanced patient care (Xu, 2020). It is essential to understand what makes an efficient and effective nurse leader succeed within an organization/unit, especially regarding safe and efficient patient care. Every healthcare professional’s goal should be to become an effective and efficient leader in patient advocacy, safety, and maintenance.

Thanks for sharing this post with us. Very informative. We both have two behaviors in common, Learner and Connectedness. Every worker in an organization requires to grow connection skills. A successful leader leads through authority and connection. It will be a good idea for a leader to develop the leadership skill needed to connect and nurture a connection with his team. No one wants to follow a leader who has weak connection skills, and weak connection skill prevents many leaders from gaining followers. The knowledge of a leader, skills, and organizational culture are the core elements of innovation (Pedraza-Rodríguez et al., 2023).
In order to strengthen the behavior of connectedness, a leader must recognize varying connection needs; it will be a good idea for a leader to learn about the behavior of individuals in the team and tailor his behavior to connect based on what has been learned about the individual in the team. The bond between leader and team member is considered an effective organizational tool (Qalati et al., 2022). In order to strengthen the behavior of connectedness, a leader must be present in a conversation.
Undoubtedly, attention is the oxygen for the relationship to strengthen connectedness. It is imperative that when meeting people, one should endeavor to give them full attention, this will show them you are paying attention, and it also shows a sign of respect. Asking the question in the course of conversation is a sign of respect as well. Showing empathy is a good way of strengthening the behavior of connectedness.
Tone control plays an essential role in connectedness. For example, suppose somebody engages me in a conversation, and the tone lacks respect. In that case, I will automatically put up a wall, and whatever the person says is not sinking in me anymore. Tendering sincere apologies when mistakes occur will also strengthen connectedness. The ability to learn is not a matter of intelligence, and people are not born learners; otherwise, there will not be a justification for getting better at learning. Learners are made. They are not born. We can become expertise if we deliberately practice and strategize to enhance our learning ability.
In order to strengthen one’s skill, one must organize one’s goal, use a targeted approach to learning, reflect on our learning, ask ourself if one understands an idea, understand our goals, inquire if one needs more background knowledge, or more practice are all ways to improve our learning ability. Knowledgeable leaders are essential assets to an organization because, in inspiring employees, good leaders play a vital role (Haider et al., 2022).

After completing the StrengthsFinder assessment instrument, the report revealed that my top 5 themes are Includer, Relator, Positivity, Achiever and Focus. As in Includer, the results showed that I do my best work in the evening or after midnight. I find this to be very true because I am often up late getting things done. That is when I find the most peacefulness. It also says that I usually find qualities to appreciate in most people that I meet. I also believe that this is true because I believe that people come into your life for a reason, season or lifetime and I feel that a positive each person that we meet we can take a positive trait from each of them.
The Relator characteristic reports that I enjoy close relationships with others and find deep satisfaction in working hard with friends to achieve a goal. I tend to have friendships where we hold one accountable, which ultimately drives us to achieve the goals that we set out for ourselves.
As a person of Positivity, I am very generous with praise, quick to smile and always lookout for the positive in all situations. I do take every situation and look at the bright side of it. I am on of celebration and believe that everything should be celebrated. It also states that “somehow you can’t quite escape your conviction that it is good to be alive.” I am firm believer of that, because with everything that we have been through with the Coronavirus situation, we still stand as front-line care givers and are still striving to do well in school and I am ever so grateful for that.
As the Achiever, this helps explain my drive. I do believe that we all should strive to reach our greatest potential. With this quality, I do believe that something should be marked off the list each day and each day begins at zero. I do feel that if nothing gets done, then I have failed for the day. I have to stop being so critical and relax and live a little more without pressuring myself so much. In the end, I do believe that each day should begin with a set of goals or a list of things/tasks to do.
The final strength is Focus. This strength aligns with the strength of Achiever as Focus always has to have a goal in wanting to know “where am I headed”. This is true because I believe that you should always plan. With this plan, it allows me to prioritize and stay on target. I am the one who keeps everyone on tasks. My Focus reminds everyone that if something isn’t helping you achieve your goals, then it must be eliminated.
In conclusion, I feel that these results relate to my leadership traits by of way of setting goals. I do praise my team all of time. When nurses are given praise, it inspires us to continue to do well. I approach each situation with positivity and I allow the team to provide suggestions on how we can make our unit better. I include their thoughts, feelings and consideration for making changes.

The assessment provides one with an insight into the qualities they possess. On a second thought can cite practical examples and agree with the assessment on the themes that resonate with them. You have thoroughly discussed the five strongest themes of the evaluation. Personal values are solid pillars in boosting an individual’s leadership effectiveness and efficiency (Bruno & Lay, 2008). Other than trying to better your five strongest themes from the assessment, I believe there are different themes in which you were clearly weak and would have loved to strengthen. Do you think being a learner would complement our achiever theme? If one had complimentary themes all through, it would make for great leadership. Fischer (2017) advised that any nurse who desires to be an outstanding leader must be ready to continuously and progressively learn, something you should consider.

From the beginning of educational, vocational, and career guidance ‘a clear understanding of yourself’ has been considered as crucial for making a ‘wise choice’ (Rossier, 2015). I always enjoy taking surveys or assessments such as this; personality surveys/assessments displaying character strengths and weaknesses, and no matter how many different surveys or assessments I may take, I always learn something new about myself. I almost wish I kept all the surveys I’ve ever taken to see how much I have changed over the years. The Gallup assessment was designed to identify your strengths so that an individual can see where they strive and where they might need some more development; knowing what your leading themes are is the first step to turning them into strengths (Gallup, 2017).
This assessment, my top five strengths are: empathy, consistency, harmony, positivity, and includer. I really wasn’t surprised by any of these traits, I think it describes my strengths pretty accurately. I was glad that I got strengths in three out of the four categories, those being executing, influencing, and relationship building; I was concerned that I did not have any strengths in the strategic thinking category, that is something that I am going to have to work on.
Two strengths that I would like to work on is empathy and harmony. Working in nursing, and being part of the ever-changing world, empathy is something that continues to be a necessity. Seeing the world through the eyes of others and understanding their point of view is required to truly see the world as they do, to care for them in a whole different way. I am very empathetic when it comes to my patients and individuals in my life, but it is a strength that can always develop more. I would like to also strengthen harmony, as to not decrease my own views to keep the peace; I never want to diminish my thoughts, beliefs, or opinions to make sure that there are no arguments.
Two characteristics and core values that I would like to straighten are self-assurance and consistency. I always second guess myself, my abilities, my thinking, my strengths; I hope to strengthen my self-assurance and have more confidence in myself so that I can apply my other strengths to help myself and others. I would also like to stay consistent in my beliefs, my opinions, and my thoughts. I am not consistent with these attributes because one of my strengths is harmony, decreasing my thoughts, opinions, and beliefs to avoid any confrontation.
Nursing is a profession in which communication, empathy, reliability, and attention to detail are essential, yet difficult to measure, in a potential employee (Cupit, Sukal, 2015).Working on the trauma floor I know that I am very empathetic to my patients, I am also a charge nurse on my floor and people look to me to help them deliver care to their patients. Staff members also look to me to help keep the peace between patients and nurses, and coworkers. I include every nurse in any plans that are made, both inside and outside of the hospital along with always staying positive. Staying positive is probably the most difficult where we work, but I always remind the staff that it could be worse, we could be a patient in the bed.

I agree with you that self-awareness plays a significant role in making wise decisions. By taking the assessment, one becomes more self-aware and understands personal leadership traits better. You have an impressive variety of strong themes in your leadership scope, and the areas of focus in your improvement plan will only make you a better leader. Self-assurance is a critical trait. I believe most people would relate to the challenge you have of second-guessing everything they do or have. Self-assurance only comes with confidence in one’s own abilities (McCormick, 2011). Improving on self-assurance is akin to a self-conscious decision to change one’s view of self. To be convinced about personal skills and values, one should refer to past successes, compliments from other people, and progress made (Bruno & Lay, 2008). With self-assurance, you are guaranteed to succeed in leaps and bounds.
