In this module, you begin laying the foundation for your academic and professional success. Your efforts begin with a vision that includes your own definition of success. Your vision may vary from those of your colleagues, but this does not mean you have to take these first steps alone.
Walden University and the School of Nursing (SON) also have a vision and mission, which include helping you to make your own vision a reality. Members of your new academic community, such as faculty, support teams, and fellow students, can also be helpful. Current practitioners and other member of the professional community can also help you to clarify your vision.
This Module’s Discussion asks you to consider how the Walden mission and vision as well as the SON’s mission and vision apply to your professional and academic goals. You will also begin to identify individuals and teams who can help you along the way as you begin designing the “blueprint”—your Academic Success and Professional Development Plan—that will guide you toward your own vision for academic and professional success.
To Prepare:
- Review the Walden and SON mission and vision statements, Walden’s goals and University Outcomes, and the MSN Program Learning Outcomes presented in this Module’s Learning Resources.
- Reflect on your professional and academic goals as they relate to your program/specialization.
- Consider how the information in these resources fit with your own goals and to your becoming a scholar-practitioner.
- Also consider academic and professional individuals and teams with whom you may collaborate in support of your efforts as a student at the university and as a professional within your organization and career.
By Day 3 of Week 1
Post a brief introduction of yourself to your colleagues. Include an explanation as to how Walden’s vision, mission, goals, and social change initiatives relate to your professional and academic goals and to your becoming a scholar-practitioner. My practice area is family nurse practitioner and I am concerned about patient safety. I began the research by using the “Walden Library and Your Total Information Network” to guide me in the necessary steps in locating the scholarly articles. I selected the articles based on my nursing topic and followed the link to the nursing databases area in the library. I saw the list of available databases and I chose on that includes full text articles from the list of “Best Bets”. I chose the CINAHL (Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature) and typed by topic or subject, nurse-to-patient ratios and nursing levels in hospitals and effects on patient care (Walden University Library, 2022). The database brought me to a result page of articles to select and I chose the above article.
Searching for the articles based on the above steps did not present any significant difficulties. The only notable challenge or difficulty was ensuring that I use the specific terms and topics to filter the results and searches for better optimization. CINAHL would be a useful database to my colleagues because it is easy to navigate and filters outcomes appropriately (Walden University Library, 2022b). Further, it provides full text articles with full citations that makes it easy for colleagues to use it in getting appropriate research evidence for their projects. I would recommend this database because of the benefits that it offers like fast and easy navigation of the different components that it has for nurses and other health care professionals and nursing students.

Establishing a Network and Progression
I am very excited to embark on this journey with you all! I work in the field of acute critical care in a small community hospital in the Philadelphia suburbs. I’ve been in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for five years and have always wanted to further my education. As a result, my acceptance into this program is both exciting and terrifying. The majority of this course appears to be devoted to networking and identifying people who can help you in times of stress. My two older brothers and one younger brother are both nurses in Acute or Long Term Intensive Care. Both of my parents are registered nurses.
My mother has worked as an ER nurse for thirty years, and my father has also worked as a nurse for thirty years. My father has always been an advocate for continuing education (he holds many degrees himself, from Bachelors in nursing to MBA). I had a positive impression of what I was signing up for after reviewing Walden’s vision, missions, goals, and societal change because of his emphasis on “never slowing down” and “always utilizing education to help you improve.” In contrast to Walden’s Mission While reading Walden’s “Visions,” it became clear that their goal is to promote the greater good. Hopefully, learning knowledge to help me grow in a professional setting will reflect the impact we all hope to make, which is to promote the greatest good to those we care for on a daily basis.
The “missions” section simply emphasized the importance of having an outlet that promotes growth in an individual, in this case through an educational program. Walden’s mission of assisting in the transition into a knowledgeable and confident nurse who serves the greater good aligns perfectly with the roles my father attempted to instill in me at a young age, as previously discussed. Walden provides a number of program objectives, but one in particular stood out to me. The ultimate goal, according to their website, is “to produce graduates who are scholarly, reflective practitioners and agents for positive change” (Walden University, n.d.). This stood out because I really enjoy the second half.
Change is a term that is thrown around too often without emphasizing its significance, and hearing my father’s influence float around throughout my life has made me realize how powerful change can be. From Walden’s perspective, social change appears to be entirely driven by growth and development, with the implication of application to a society for the greater good. The social change aspect really appeals to me because it emphasizes not only the importance of this knowledge, but also the importance of applying the skills we will learn along the way. Through Walden, I hope to hone my application skills in order to better serve those with whom we interact on a daily basis. Walden provides University Outcomes that appear to flawlessly wrap up everything mentioned previously.
