What types of complementary and alternative practices have you seen in your nursing practice or used personally and what was the effectiveness of the practice? (no reference required)
Remember to include an APA formatted in-text citation AND corresponding reference from a recent (within last 5 years), professional journal or website (NIH, CDC, etc.). (Failure to include BOTH an in-text citation AND a corresponding reference will result in a significant point deduction. Please contact your coach if you have any questions about this BEFORE submitting your post to the discussion board this week.) You do not need an in-text citation/reference for all questions, but the FIRST question DOES require an in-text citation and reference.

Teaching Discussion Board
We hope that you are enjoying reading your selected book for the Book Review assignment and were able to learn health and wellness concepts that you can bring into your personal and professional lives. An integral part of nursing is teaching and there are always opportunities to teach your clients, patients, family, and friends. In this discussion, you will explore what you are already learning from the book you are reading, or what you have learned from other readings in this course, and how you could format a teaching plan to educate an audience on some of the concepts you have learned. You will include your Topic, a Rationale with citation, an Intended Audience, a Teaching Method, 2 SMART Objectives, and how you will Evaluate objective achievement.
Post your original post and respond to 2 peer posts in order to receive credit.
TOPIC: What will you teach about?
RATIONALE (include a citation): Why is this topic important?
AUDIENCE: Who will you be teaching?
TEACHING METHOD: Would you use a Power Point, poster, handouts, or a video? Why?
LEARNER OBJECTIVES (use SMART format): ex) 1. The learner will be able to …. 2.
PLAN FOR EVALUATION: How will you measure if your audience reached the objectives?
Health Education is an important part of Health Promotion. Health education is defined as “any combination of learning experiences designed to help individuals and communities improve their health, by increasing their knowledge or influencing their attitudes” (World Health Organization [WHO], 2018a, para 1). Health education and Health promotion go hand in hand. By teaching patients about their health, the good, the bad, and recommendations we are promoting patients into living a healthy lifestyle and encouraging them to take care of themselves. After education, patients can also relay what they learned to their friends, family and community thus creating a healthier society overall.
The nursing process is system used by the nurse to assess, diagnose, plan, implement and evaluate the outcomes of their patients. The nurse will use the nursing process when evaluating what and how to teach a patient. The nurse must take into account any social determinants of health that may act as a barriers to patient education (Falkner et al., 2022).
A contemporary issue a family may experience today especially in the summer months as were in now could be drowning. Drowning is the leading cause of unintentional death in children from 1-4 (Falkner et al.,2022). When educating patients and in this case parents on the prevention of drowning, the nurse can develop an educational plan to determine risks, and safety plans to prevent against accidental drowning.
First, the nurse would educate patients on the statistics of drownings. The nurse would then ask if the family has any pools or spas that were easily accessible. Determining if there were any barriers or locks around these objects would also be important to know. Educating on safety measures such as fences, locks, life jackets, and close supervision would be essential. Providing resources on where parents could obtain CPR training, if they were to ever need, it would be beneficial. At the end, doing a check for understanding on what you just taught is important. Asking feedback questions and having the patients use the teach back method would be sufficient in the nurse determining understanding. Allowing time for questions may also increase understanding and allow for a better outcome.
