“Health equity” refers to a state characterized by the absence of systematic inequalities in health. While this state is usually referred to in aspirational terms, because inequalities are pervasive and arguably will never be eliminated, the policy goal of moving toward health equity implies attempts to reduce health inequalities to a minimal level. It is therefore “an ethical concept, grounded in the principle of distributive justice” and connected to a field of research that is “unavoidably politicized.” Advocacy is recognized as a means of promoting policies that help improve health equity. These policies take action on the SDH, either through universal provision of services, as part of strategies to improve the health of disadvantaged groups, or by “leveling up” the health of less advantaged groups to that enjoyed by more advantaged groups in society. National policies have been implemented in phases throughout the last two decades to reduce and eliminate health disparities, and more recently, attain the highest level of care among all population groups across America (i.e., health equity) (Williams et al., 2015).
As an advanced registered nurse, I hope to use evidence proven by research to influence decision makers and other stakeholders to support or implement policies that contribute to improving health equity. Possible challenge would include lack of representation and inability to convince policy makers of the existence or severity of certain health disparities. Promoting greater uptake and enforcement of human rights legislation in international and national legislatures would provide “legislative hooks” for advocacy efforts to latch on to. Job shadowing activities could be another method to increase understanding between researchers and policymakers. Such activities would increase interactions and build working relationships between policymakers and researchers, thereby helping bring research evidence more efficiently to decision-making processes, educate policymakers about the world of science and the validity of evidence, and inform researchers about the “messy and nonlinear” processes and data needs of the policymaking world (Farrer et al., 2015)

Title: NUR 550 Topic 8 DQ 2 As an advanced registered nurse, discuss your future role in advocating for equitable population health services and policies
This is insightful, Ngozi; healthcare equity involves the provision of quality healthcare services to all the population irrespective of their levels of income, race, places of origin, age, as well as their location. The major role of the health department is to ensure equitable distribution of healthcare services and to ensure improvement in the general health of the population (Williams et al., 2016).

Given that it is difficult to eradicate inequalities, there are always attempts to try and reduce cases of inequalities in terms of healthcare resources. Registered nurses have full responsibilities in ensuring the provision of equitable healthcare services (Cookson et al., 2018). They can reach out to governmental institutions to try and ensure equality of healthcare services. National policies have been implemented in phases throughout the last two decades to reduce and eliminate health disparities, and more recently, attain the highest level of care among all population groups across America (Lane et al., 2017). Some of the challenges that may be encountered in advocating for equitable healthcare services include healthcare policies, unequal distribution of healthcare resources, as well as legislative challenges.

Title: NUR 550 Topic 8 DQ 2 As an advanced registered nurse, discuss your future role in advocating for equitable population health services and policies
As an advanced registered nurse my future role in advocating for equitable population health services and policies would need to start with having a knowledge base and understanding of the social determinates of health (SDOH) so that I will be able to understand the root causes of poor health among certain populations to be able to provide adequate and realistic solutions (Sundean, 2019). Performing a community needs assessment will also help with determining the needs of the community and help make policy advocacy more successful. Once doing the above I would help to inform, educate, and empower others regarding the health issues that are being faced. From there I would need to form community partnerships and an action plan to help identify and solve the health problems that are present (Sundean, 2019). Policies would need to be created with support from individuals and the communities. A challenge or barrier that I would anticipate would be that of a lack of cooperation from health institutions and/or the healthcare team in supporting my advocacy. I would address this challenge/barrier by making sure I take the time to develop a compelling request with an appropriate timeframe, communicate clearly and concisely the impact that the situation I am addressing impacts those involved, make sure that I am competent and can build credibility and trustworthiness to back the case I am presenting with facts and accurate data, and lastly create a collaborative environment with the stakeholders (Tomajan, 2012).

Title: NUR 550 Topic 8 DQ 2 As an advanced registered nurse, discuss your future role in advocating for equitable population health services and policies
This is insightful, Julie; advanced registered nurses play significant roles in ensuring the provision of equitable care to the entire population. Advanced practice registered nurses also have the responsibility of ensuring the delivery of quality healthcare services to all the patients and population (Sundean, 2019). Advanced practice registered nurses can take part in the policy formulation processes aimed at establishing the platforms for delivering quality healthcare services. In most cases, policies ought to be created with support from individuals and the members of the community (Appelbaum & Batt, 2020). Lack of corporation from the healthcare providers can hinder the progress towards the delivery of equitable care to all the members of the population (Culyer, 2019). In most cases, healthcare institutions/providers need to be engaged in the policy-making processes to ensure that there is effective implementation of strategies required for successful outcomes. Besides, strict policies and unequal distribution of healthcare resources may interfere with the distribution of equitable healthcare services.

Title: NUR 550 Topic 8 DQ 2 As an advanced registered nurse, discuss your future role in advocating for equitable population health services and policies
As patient advocates and primary healthcare providers, advanced registered nurses have an obligation and role in advocating for equitable population health policies and even services. In its report on the future of nursing, 2020 to 2030, the National Academy of Medicine explores different ways that nurses can work with the focus of reducing health disparities and promoting equity while also reducing the costs and leveraging technology to attain patient and family-centered care (Wakefield et al., 2021). A core part of this role is to promote equity through policy advocacy and increased expansion to primary care interventions (Guastaferro et al., 2019). Nurses as critical part of the healthcare system focus on the translational of research evidence into clinical practice and health populations through educating their patients and communities that they serve. Again, nurses participate in offering feedback and input to national research entities on the different aspects of care that need improvement to enhance care delivery for patients. The third that nurses can use to promote health equity is through participation in policy formulation by interacting with patients, health populations and communities that need better healthcare services, especially preventive care (Sundean, 2019). The implication us that nurses must work collaboratively with all stakeholders to reduce the underlying health disparities and ensure that patients attain health equity.
Population advocacy can present a host of challenges or barriers to nurses. These include need for sufficient resources, support from the organizational management, increased collaboration that may not be possible, and experience as well as advanced skills to navigate the process and the diverse stakeholders involved in the process. Meeting these challenges requires nurses to focus on support and leverage EBP findings that will make it easy to implement a raft of measures in the long-term in advocating for population health.

Hello Marie,
It is true that patient advocacy extends to healthcare policymaking processes. Therefore, healthcare workers such as primary healthcare providers and advanced registered nurses should have a position in the decision-making table. Patient advocates should be allowed to voice patient concerns in the policymaking process (Brown et al., 2022). Acknowledging the role of patient advocates in decision-making process improve their professional input. Healthcare workers interact with different patients. These engagements between healthcare workers and their patients create room to understand patient preferences and their concerns. At the same time, prolonged durations of healthcare workers in their environments expose them to different information that can impact policymaking process. Promoting equity is the assignment of healthcare providers and workers (Cole et al., 2022). Therefore, healthcare stakeholders understand the importance of patient advocacy in promoting health equity. Healthcare professionals use their competence and knowledge to participate in addressing health disparities. The inclusion of healthcare workers in critical positions of tackling health disparities boasts the routine.

Since I have decided to continue my education at Grand Canyon University, I have learned a lot these last few classes about all of the many opportunities that are available to nurses and advanced registered nurses surrounding joining a professional nursing organization. Professional nursing organizations empower nurses to work together to improve population health and policy ensuring the voices of nurses are heard at all levels where decisions are made (American Nurses Association, n.d.). One way to accomplish this is through lobbying. Lobbying is advocating to support a certain cause, and can be done by a group, but one challenge is non-profit organizations can lose their tax-exempt status for excessive lobbying (Nash et al., 2019). Lobbying is a protected right, but people, whether individuals or groups, must register and disclose certain information. To overcome challenges, it is beneficial to utilize different lobbying methods and include preferences, resources, and the likelihood of success (Nash et al., 2019).

Title: NUR 550 Topic 8 DQ 2 As an advanced registered nurse, discuss your future role in advocating for equitable population health services and policies
Nurses are often understood in providing bedside services but their roles in influencing leadership and equity are less understood. Essentially, as an advanced registered nurse, I play critical roles in ensuring quality care services to all patients (Huston, 2013). Nurses spend the longest period with patients and therefore are better placed in advocating for equality during services. This entails equity in the provision of patient education to address the aspect of self-care. Nursing practice standards require the professionals to offer care by considering safety to patients. This also entails the provision of health services without bias to all patient population.
In my practice as an advanced nurse in critical care, I find it right to advocate for equitable distribution of services to patients. However, equitable population health among a given target population also relies on organizational policies on patient care. Existing structures on quality care to all patients ensure that nurses do not engage in service delivery that is skewed towards a selected racial group or people from a given social class (Masters, 2018). Moreover, as an advanced nurse leader, my role will also entail the formulation of practice standards in an organization to motivate the team towards providing quality care without bias. In other words, an advanced registered nurse needs to be a champion for change to encourage general nurses on the need to practice fairness in health procedures.
Nurse leaders play a critical role in championing for patient advocacy. However, in my practice as an advanced registered nurse, challenges are innumerable especially as I champion for population advocacy (Masters, 2018). Mainly, the challenge arises from ineffective systems of operations in a health facility that does not guarantee equality to all patients. The premise instills a culture of bias among nurses as they will emulate what the organization practices (Huston, 2013). Ideally, an organization that fails to sensitize its staff on the aspect of equality in care is likely to experience high rates of prejudice which in overall, affects the patient population seeking services with the facility.
