Title: NUR 550 Topic 4 DQ 2 Identify a data collection tool you could use for your research.

An appropriate data collection tool for the research topic of Nursing Shortage and its impact on patient care would be a survey. Surveys are an effective tool for collecting data in a short amount of time, as they can be distributed to a large number of people in a variety of settings. Surveys are particularly useful when attempting to gain insights into the opinions and experiences of a population (Siegel et al., 2023). Surveys can be as simple as a few questions on a one-page questionnaire or as complex as a series of interviews that require a more in-depth exploration of the topic.
In order to overcome any potential barriers that may arise during data collection, translational research can be employed. Translational research is a type of research that facilitates the transfer of knowledge and technologies from the laboratory to the healthcare setting, with the ultimate goal of improving patient outcomes (Hariyati et al., 2023). In this regard, it can be used to bridge the gap between the laboratory and clinical settings by engaging stakeholders from both environments. This can be done through focus groups, stakeholder interviews, and other forms of qualitative data collection. Additionally, translational research can be used to identify and address any potential issues with data collection, such as inadequate training of staff or inadequate resources. Finally, translational research can be used to develop and evaluate new technologies, such as health information systems, to ensure that data collection is reliable and accurate. All of these strategies can help to ensure that any barriers to data collection are addressed and overcome (Siegel et al., 2023). This type of research enables the people who are being studied to have a direct say in the research process and helps conduct the research in an ethical and respectful manner.

Additionally, to provide an understanding of participatory research and to gain collaborative support for this type of research, several strategies can be employed. First, it is important to ensure that all stakeholders are consulted, including those who are affected by the nursing shortage. It is also important to involve the research participants in the process of the research, as well as during the scrutiny and production of results. Additionally, it is important to ensure that the research is conducted under the consideration of ethical norms and that all participants are given adequate time and resources to participate in the research process. Finally, an effective communication strategy should be employed in order to ensure that the research results are disseminated to all relevant stakeholders appropriately.

I have often heard when doing a quality improvement or research project for my facility the phrase “show me the data”, Data tells a story in an analytical manner. I will honestly say I do not like to collect data, yet when in my current role as a nurse manager, it is very difficult to make changes or show improvement without data.

The similar can be said for research, when doing research, one cannot prove a point or show why a project will work or improve patient outcomes unless there is data to back up the process. Data collection tools can vary dependent on the type of research, they can range from, interviews as in a qualitative study to capture the emotion or questionnaires, surveys and checklists to gather the numerical data needed in a quantitative study (Formplus, 2021).NUR 550 Topic 4 DQ 2

Translational research is a tool to transition evidence based research from evidence to “real life” using the translational research(Tilter, 2018). My project is on education of the nurses about quantitative blood loss and how it can improve patient outcomes through early identification of a postpartum hemorrhage, The phase of this research is in the T3 phase of implementation in to practice or disseminating this great research to the clinical areas.

Barriers to this research lie in it is a change in practice and a change in a way of thinking or changing “what we have always known”, as nurses we like to have a clear path and the why to a change in or practice to improve patient outcomes. Utilizing translational research to show and create a clinical theory can help to create that clear path on how to translate this research to practice and the “why” behind the practice change.NUR 550 Topic 4 DQ 2

T3 or Phase 4 of clinical outcome research can be utilized through checklists, or toolkits to help follow the translation phased to change the research from bench to bedside easier(Tilter, 2018).NUR 550 Topic 4 DQ 2NUR 550 Topic 4 DQ 2

A data collection tool that I could use for my research would be that of data reporting from using hospital/clinic records as my source of data. This would help give me more accurate information on whether education on cervical cancer and screening options increased cervical cancer screening rates in my population.

This would allow me to not have to use self-reporting as a means of my data. A barrier that could arise would be that of the clinics/hospitals allowing access to the participants health records. I could use translational research to potentially overcome barriers that may arise during data collection by it allowing for opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration to help with any knowledge gaps there may be (Diptyanusa & Hasanbasri, 2020).NUR 550 Topic 4 DQ 2

With this, it would be explaining to clinics and/or hospitals the importance of the information that is needing to be collected and how the information will be used to translate findings into daily practice so that they understand the reasoning behind the data why the data is needed. It should be explained that the research is to help achieve medical advances. With the lack of involvement and interdisciplinary interactions, it can deplete the translational ability of research (Diptyanusa & Hasanbasri, 2020).NUR 550 Topic 4 DQ 2

The best type of translational research to address this barrier would be that of phase 5 or T5 research. The reason I chose this type of translational research is because it involves translation to the community and population level outcomes (Titler,2018). This would be the best type also because my research is based on a population of ethnic minority women in general versus a single ethnic population.NUR 550 Topic 4 DQ 2

Strategies that I would use to provide an understanding of my chosen type of translational research to gather collaborative support would be to explain why cervical cancer screening in important to all women including those of all ethnic minorities in order to decrease the incidence and mortality of cervical cancer among this population. I would also explain that the earlier stage cervical cancer is caught, the better the outcomes would be, and the costs of healthcare would be less than if cervical cancer was found in the later stages.

I would also show data of survival rates of this cancer when found in the earlier stages versus the later stages which would show the importance of why this research is needed at a community level versus a single population level.NUR 550 Topic 4 DQ 2

Re: Topic 4 DQ 2

One collection tool that I would use for my research is observation. This will assist in the data collection process for achieving the desired objective of the research study. Both the participant and non-participant observations are powerful tools for collecting qualitative data, this aids the researcher by giving an opportunity to capture various information, including verbal and non-verbal communication, techniques of providing care through demonstration, and external factors such as the environmental (Barret & Twycross, 2018).

Barriers identified in the study could be lack of support from management or the organization in assisting with the research study. Also, other barriers are the heavy workload of the nurses to perform non-pharmacologic interventions, not having enough time, lack of required knowledge and skills, and having limited opportunities for participating in research (Bahadori et al., 2016).NUR 550 Topic 4 DQ 2

Overcoming barriers can be done if nursing organization show commitment in aligning the substantial effort being invested in the development of best practice protocols with translational nursing research that aims to verify the validity and reliability of these identified best practices (Weiss et al., 2018). The type of translational research to address this is T2 and T3 research.

The rationale behind it is because both can be used to determine how efficient these non-pharmacologic interventions are in managing chronic pain in optimal and real-world scenarios, respectively. T2 can test new interventions in a controlled setting whereas T3 can assist in determining if the interventions work for a wider group of people or the general population.NUR 550 Topic 4 DQ 2

The first step I would take to gather collaborative support is to present to the organization the significance of conducting this research study. Using latest statistics provided by CDC in relation to the opioid crisis, it will give a clear picture of how non-pharmacologic interventions in addition to non-prescription medications can help with chronic pain management as well as reducing opioid abuse.

There are multiple data collection tools that are used in research. These tools range from surveys to interviews to observations (Paradis et al., 2016). For my research, the best data collection tool would be content analysis of photography/video recordings (Paradis et al., 2016). When comparing infant safe sleep environments before and after an intervention, analyzing the adherence to safe sleep guidelines via checklist at different points in time will determine if the intervention was successful and collect necessary data.

Some barriers that may arise during data collection include lack of response by parents/parents not sending in photos of infant sleep spaces in a timely manner (Canty et al., 2020). In order to address this barrier, T2 translational research should be employed with considerations for parents with access to fewer resources (Canty et al., 2020).

Using the T2 phase of translational research will help researchers see what efforts need to be employed to promote adherence to parents sending photos/videos to their healthcare professionals.

In order to gather collaborative support on my translational research, I would educate obstetric clinics and hospitals with labor and delivery units on the disparity of sudden unexpected infant deaths (SUIDs) among African American populations. The disparity demonstrates that something needs to be done to help prevent SUIDs, starting with making sure infants sleep in safe environments via telehealth communications to help prevent this occurrence. E

ducation and presentation of current studies/evidence on this topic could help foster collaboration and understanding for this research.

I chose two data collection tools that you could use for research because I think they are both useful and problematic and those are surveys and audits. Surveys can be so helpful because they provide a lot of feedback are usually not time consuming and it’s an easy way to reach a large amount of people with little time. But I am sure we have all taken a survey and not answered the questions honestly or hurried through it because we just wanted to get the survey done.

When this happens, it can lead to inconclusive or inaccurate results. Also, sometimes people don’t answer surveys honestly if they do not believe it is anonymous. I was part of a research study for plantar fasciitis. The study was injecting radiated amniotic fluid from a healthy pregnant woman into the plantar fascia to help it regenerate similar to stem cells or you just got normal saline (placebo).

How the study worked though was I went in and at the beginning of every appointment took a survey. It was the same survey every time. I did that survey until the end of the study over a year period. I was being paid and cared about the research, so I really took my time to answer.

I believe if those involved care about the cause they will answer the survey with integrity but it’s always a risk.  The other data collection method is audits. For example, with my EBP project one of the interventions is doing an audit to make sure all the interventions were completed. This audit involves the RN coming on shift, and the RN going off of shift.

Together the RN’s go through the audit list a fill it out based on the information in the EHR system and turn it in. These audits give us data to catch something if it’s being missed and is all based on documentation, so it urges nurses to document so that when these audits happen the information is there, and the interventions were done properly.

I think the best strategy is making sure that those involved with the research are committed to provide quality information and participate to the best of their ability. Controlling who is part of your study can help with many common issues that arise.

There is a whole science behind selecting participants for health research some of the essentials to consider are whether to work with samples or include the whole population in the study (census), the sample basis, the sampling process and the potential effects nonrespondents might have on study results (Martínez-Mesa et al., 2016).

The type of research tool that could be used to evaluate the efficacy of mindfulness meditation and resilience training over group therapy to reduce stress in nursing staff, is a pre and post questionnaire and survey. A potential barrier to using this translational type two (T2) tool is lack of trust. Often surveys and questionnaires are distributed by the organization or hospital system that the nurse is employed by, but this may lead to the research participants not being one hundred percent honest with their answers because of fear of retaliation from their employers.

A way to avoid this potential barrier is to have an independent third party that is in no way related to their employer, conduct the surveys or questionnaires. During the planning stages of my translational research study, I would use a digital Mind Mapping tool to encourage nurses to provide input and brainstorm on what types of survey questions they feel would provide the most accurate assessment of the efficacy of the interventions (Literacy Ideas for Teachers and Students, n.d.).

In addition to encouraging buy in from the nursing population that is to participate in the research study, allowing the nurses to participate in creating the Mind Map will also ensure that the questions asked are relevant to the issues and concerns facing that population.
