Interprofessional communication is essential for successful patient care as well as the smooth operation of our healthcare systems. The use of informatics and communication devices in healthcare has been shown to improve patient safety. The use of electronic health records (EHRs) and computerized provider order entry has reduced errors (CPOEs). Physicians and other team members can read, document, and communicate with one another. Although some technological platforms do not support conversational communication, their documentation can be used to communicate.

The National Patient Safety Foundation compiled a list of the top patient safety issues in 2016, such as wrong-site surgery, falls, and diagnostic errors, in 2016. (McGonigle & Garver-Mastrian, 2018). Wireless monitoring, clinician alerts, point-of-care applications, apps, and radiofrequency identification applications are examples of patient safety technologies (McGonigle & Garver-Mastrian, 2018, p. 304). Although these technological advances are now commonplace for nurses and providers, they were not always available.

Although technology has been shown to reduce the number of medical errors, ultimate success is dependent on the user. For example, while all providers may have the tools to effectively communicate with one another, patient safety may suffer if those tools are not used appropriately. According to the Joint Commission, “the overall safety and effectiveness of technology in healthcare ultimately depends on its human users,” and “any form of technology can have a negative impact on the quality and safety of care” (McGonigle & Garver-Mastrian, 2018, p. 303).

The hospital where I work has recently started using a program called Microsoft Teams. It is essentially a phone or desktop computer app that enables all team members to participate in team meetings, video chats, instant messaging, and other activities. Based on their job title or area of expertise, members may be assigned to different groups for more specialized communication. During these difficult COVID-19 times, the beauty of this product is that it allows team members to communicate from remote locations. I can also message and contact providers directly about clinical practice issues involving patients I am caring for. This application is said to be safe and secure, but applications are only as safe as their users.

Nurses should be able to coordinate care, expedite patient transitions, and mobilize hospital resources without constantly seeking assistance from other team members. Smartphones, iPads, electronic health records (EHRs), computers on wheels (COWS), and Vocera devices can assist nurses and interprofessional team members in coordinating care, cultivating a sense of connection, collaboration, and teamwork.

Smartphones and the Vocera badge support two-way communication. This allows for immediate assistance, feedback, and team building. When a clinician has two-way communication, he or she can contact a team member while remaining with the patient, as opposed to physically locating the team member. Using a smartphone during a 12-hour shift can save a nurse 2.5 hours, according to one study. This can aid in the reduction of physical fatigue and burnout. When using these devices, patients’ confidentiality and privacy must be taken into account (Zysk, 2018).

These communication platforms allow the nurse to contact a doctor who hasn’t entered notes into the EHR, call the blood bank to see if a patient needs blood type and screening, or contact the pharmacy department to see if a medication is ready for pick up.

Communication technologies combined with interprofessional collaboration can help improve patient care and outcomes, reduce medical errors, start treatment sooner, reduce inefficiencies and healthcare costs, and improve employee relationships and job satisfaction (Tigerconnect, 2021).
