Although technology has been shown to reduce the number of medical errors, ultimate success is dependent on the user. For example, while all providers may have the tools to effectively communicate with one another, patient safety may suffer if those tools are not used appropriately. According to the Joint Commission, “the overall safety and effectiveness of technology in healthcare ultimately depends on its human users,” and “any form of technology can have a negative impact on the quality and safety of care” (McGonigle & Garver-Mastrian, 2018, p. 303).
The hospital where I work has recently started using a program called Microsoft Teams. It is essentially a phone or desktop computer app that enables all team members to participate in team meetings, video chats, instant messaging, and other activities. Based on their job title or area of expertise, members may be assigned to different groups for more specialized communication. During these difficult COVID-19 times, the beauty of this product is that it allows team members to communicate from remote locations. I can also message and contact providers directly about clinical practice issues involving patients I am caring for. This application is said to be safe and secure, but applications are only as safe as their users.
Nurses should be able to coordinate care, expedite patient transitions, and mobilize hospital resources without constantly seeking assistance from other team members. Smartphones, iPads, electronic health records (EHRs), computers on wheels (COWS), and Vocera devices can assist nurses and interprofessional team members in coordinating care, cultivating a sense of connection, collaboration, and teamwork.
Smartphones and the Vocera badge support two-way communication. This allows for immediate assistance, feedback, and team building. When a clinician has two-way communication, he or she can contact a team member while remaining with the patient, as opposed to physically locating the team member. Using a smartphone during a 12-hour shift can save a nurse 2.5 hours, according to one study. This can aid in the reduction of physical fatigue and burnout. When using these devices, patients’ confidentiality and privacy must be taken into account (Zysk, 2018).
These communication platforms allow the nurse to contact a doctor who hasn’t entered notes into the EHR, call the blood bank to see if a patient needs blood type and screening, or contact the pharmacy department to see if a medication is ready for pick up.
Communication technologies combined with interprofessional collaboration can help improve patient care and outcomes, reduce medical errors, start treatment sooner, reduce inefficiencies and healthcare costs, and improve employee relationships and job satisfaction (Tigerconnect, 2021).
Communication technologies can enhance the coordination of care by inter-professional teams by providing real-time interactions among care providers patients and families (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2022). These technologies allow for enhanced conversation and exchange of information for the benefit of the patient with fewer disruptions and increased clarity (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2022).
Communication technologies include “call light systems, wireless telephones, pagers, email, and instant messaging, which have traditionally been forms of communication target at clinicians” (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2022, p. 211). Moreover, patients and families are able to access their digital chart, communicate with their providers, and update their medical history and records instantaneously, which may assist in streamlining care for their providers as they receive updates from the patient in real time (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2022).
One communication technology to highlight is that of instant messaging. Instant messaging provides instant communication among the healthcare team and offers more efficiency and clarity as opposed to traditional paging systems (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2022). I have utilized instant messaging or “texting” (as we call it) in my own practice, especially as a nurse on the floor. This was the preferred method of communication between nurses and providers as they allowed providers to respond from anywhere in the hospital, and nurses were able to provide updates in real time from patients’ rooms and send pictures of patients when warranted (i.e., wound, rash, etc.). In the emergency department, notifications for traumas are paged out using the texting system, which goes out to every member of the trauma team with vital information. Additionally, the same system which has texting also provides a phone option that allows staff members to call one another. Providers are able to call nurses (and vice versa) amidst the chaos and high census when an urgent matter arises. This technology has provided greater access to each other among members of the healthcare team, and they are able to communicate and streamline care in real time.
