Contributions within the practice can be achieved by handling the issues of patients directly, while the registered nurses have to understand the direction followed through the provision of services (Stalter & Mota, 2018). Another major trend in current healthcare delivery is information technology, which emphasizes benefiting members through providing care.

       The shift in healthcare from volume-based, pay for fee services has moved to value-based that highlights patients receiving care that is affordable as well as customized to their needs (Communale et al., 2021). A team-based approach is being utilized to make this transition which includes advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) working to the full extent of their licensure, in collaboration with physicians to provide competent care that is cost effective care (Communale et al., 2021). As a result, APRNs are more satisfied with their jobs, patient outcomes are on the rise and in certain care areas, patients are not being re-admitted to the hospital as often (Communale et al., 2021).

            With this shift in health management and delivery, it appears likely that there will be increased demand for APRNs in positions all over the country, especially in rural areas that have limited access to hospitals and providers. Hopefully, we will see more states changing legislation to allow APRNs full prescribing authority as well as practicing independently without a doctor. If this becomes the case, APRNs could provide primary care services and telehealth which will streamline care and continue to lower the associated costs.

Value in healthcare to evaluate the improvement in a patient’s health outcomes to achieve the improvement based on cost. The main objective of value-based care is to make the healthcare system more valuable for patients. When the patients have positive outcomes then the value for the patient is considered better value healthcare. (Teisberg et at., 2020).  There are three main objectives for value-based care having better patient outcomes, improving healthcare outcomes, and decreasing healthcare costs (Health Payer Intelligence, 2023) Value-based care is a healthcare reimbursement model that gives the healthcare provider a fixed payment for a particular patient that meets the criteria. Value-based models usually have a financial motivation to promote quality. With this model, some of the sums of money of the provider are usually released only if the provider obtains certain quality metrics. Value-based care focuses on motivating providers to administer efficient and profitable care. Healthcare providers benefit with more payment by preventing illnesses than by treating illnesses that occur. 

This value-based care can affect APRNs by putting importance on the high level of care. Nurse practitioners are trained to give the best patient-centered care, focusing on disease prevention, health promotion, and wellness. Nurse Practitioners (NP) use their advanced education and training to give them the knowledge and skills that are required to give the best evidence-based care and care for patients with chronic illnesses.

Some of the major trends that may be coming in the future with APRNs in the healthcare system are increased demands for NPs, as well as the responsibilities of an NP, there are shortages of physicians in certain areas, NPs taking on leadership duties that involve research and diagnosis and treatment of illnesses, more NP is available in more states then a physician.
