Sample Answer for NUR 513 Week 8 Benchmark – Future Scope, Role, and Professional Obligations Paper
As nurses learn and work in diverse settings, they acquire multiple skills that empower them to handle current and emerging issues. Due to the complexity of the evolving work environment, nurses should continue exploring opportunities for personal and professional development. They should also adequately understand the scope of their future practice to prepare appropriately. As nursing evolves, many issues continue to affect the scope of practice, and nurses should understand their potential impact, solutions, and significance to the advanced registered nurse. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the scope of my future role, professional nursing organizations influencing advanced nursing, and an evolving issue likely to affect my role in the next few years.
The Scope of Future Role as an Advanced Registered Nurse
Nursing leadership is crucial for high organizational performance and persistent achievement of excellent patient outcomes. According to the American Nurses Association (2023), strong leadership in nursing enables health care delivery to cope with the constant evolution. This evolution is characterized by advances in care approaches, payment models, and organizational issues, among other elements. Consequently, nurse leaders will offer more than monitoring productivity and balancing costs as time progresses. Understanding the probable system and organization-level changes will help nursing professionals looking forward to nursing leadership to prepare and adjust appropriately.
The current health care environment also encounters many issues of varying magnitudes. Central to effective decision-making is nurse leaders, who are responsible for workplace culture, policies, and standards for sustaining excellence. Green (2019) stated that nurse leaders are innovative decision-makers in their work settings and are responsible for change initiatives. As nursing evolves, nurse leaders will play a pivotal role in initiating change to address workplace issues and optimize patient outcomes. Thus, nurse leaders’ scope of future roles is broad and will likely expand to include more responsibilities to enable organizations to adapt as situations change.
Like other specialties, advanced registered nurses seeking leadership roles should obtain appropriate certifications. The purpose of certification is to validate nurses’ skills as knowledgeable professionals able to perform according to their designated roles (Lockhart, 2019). Various agencies are involved in the certification of nurse leaders. The Commission on Nurse Certification (CNC) certifies clinical nurse leaders to ascertain they have demonstrated nursing professional standards and knowledge (American Association of Colleges of Nursing, 2023). The other agency involved in the certification of nurse leaders is the American Organization for Nursing Leadership (AONL). It certifies nurse leaders and managers through the Certified Nurse Manager and Leader (CNML) examination (American Organization for Nursing Leadership, 2023). These certifications prepare advanced registered nurses to handle the complex leadership role as health organizations strive to remain competitive and evolve progressively.
Three Influential Professional Nursing Organizations
Like other practice areas, a sense of community is essential for nurse leaders. In this case, they should join other like-minded professionals for support, mentorship, and related benefits. Cline et al. (2019) underscored the importance of joining a professional nursing organization for personal and professional development. These organizations bring nurses together to pursue a common goal of advancing practice and patient care. Since they offer different benefits and have varying membership requirements, nurses should evaluate the best according to their missions and worldviews before enrollment.
Among many organizations, the American Nurses Association (ANA) is very influential in advancing the scope and influence of advanced nursing. Founded in 1896, ANA advances nursing by fostering high standards, bolstering nurses’ health and wellness, and playing a central role in advocating for issues affecting nursing professionals and the public (American Nurses Association, 2023). The other influential organization is the American Organization for Nursing Leadership (AONL). AONL serves as the voice of nursing leadership to transform health care in the United States through expert and influential leadership (American Organization for Nursing Leadership, 2023). The Association for Nursing Professional Development (ANPD) also influences advanced nursing through professional development. As the premier organization for nurses involved in professional development, ANPD is open for advanced practice nurses mandated with orientation and onboarding, role development, and quality improvement (Association for Nursing Professional Development, 2023). These roles dominate nursing leadership, and leaders should acquire advanced skills, knowledge, and perspectives to handle them excellently.
Most Appealing Professional Organization
Among these organizations, the most appealing to me is AONL. As a growing leader, I look forward to transforming health care through strong leadership committed to addressing patients, organizational, and practice issues competently. AONL’s vision is a nursing leadership that advances health for all through one voice (American Organization for Nursing Leadership, 2023). This vision aligns with my worldview and care philosophy since I believe that all populations deserve equitable, adequate, and patient-centered health care, which can be achieved when nurses pursue a shared goal. Therefore, being a member of AONL ensures advanced registered nurses are excellently positioned to advance health via one voice.
AONL membership has various benefits essential to improving my leadership practice. The organization promotes nurse leaders’ professional development through education and advocacy. To improve nurse leaders’ capacity, AONL offers in-person and online educational programs for managers and clinical leaders on topics like shared governance and healthcare finance (American Organization for Nursing Leadership, 2023). Advocacy has much to do with efforts to influence health care transformation. As a result, AONL partners with the American Hospital Association to ensure nursing and patient care issues are addressed through public policy (American Organization for Nursing Leadership, 2023). These opportunities enable nurse leaders to advance their skills and join like-minded individuals in addressing practice issues for improved outcomes.
Controversial or Evolving Issue Most Likely to Impact Scope of Practice
Nursing encounters numerous issues affecting the scope of advanced practice and nurses’ roles significantly. An evolving issue with profound impact is the increased focus on workplace diversity. In nursing, workplace diversity is achieved by ensuring the workplace has diverse employees in race, gender, ethnicity, and other elements (Zou, 2023). A diverse workplace fosters a culture of inclusivity where individuals from different backgrounds, perspectives, and experiences work together for high patient outcomes and organizational success. Nurse leaders and other professionals in managerial positions should understand the opportunities and benefits linked to workplace diversity in order to foster it accordingly. Such opportunities include creative problem-solving, high teamwork, and improved organizational reputation.
Workplace diversity has the potential to influence the nursing profession and other stakeholders considerably. At the professional level, nurse leaders will be more involved in fostering cultures that promote inclusion to maximize the gains of a diverse workforce. Rotenstei et al. (2021) found that a lack of workforce diversity hampers patient outcomes and adversely affects other outcomes like access to care and patient trust in health care providers. For instance, nursing professionals’ race and gender affect how patients perceive and trust them. Therefore, nurse leaders must understand these relationships and promote inclusion. Regarding stakeholders, an organization’s partners, suppliers, and other groups are genuinely concerned about an organization’s brand image. Therefore, a lack of inclusion could ruin relationships with stakeholders, hence the need for increased attention to workplace diversity.
Workplace diversity should matter to the advanced registered nurse since it impacts patient care, workplace relationships, and the overall organization’s productivity. Stanford (2020) stressed the importance of diversity and inclusion in health care since it improves health-seeking behaviors among patients. A workforce that represents the community’s tapestry in race, gender, and other factors makes patients feel represented and more confident when seeking health assistance. The diversity issue should also matter since it affects work schedules and team composition to ensure sufficient inclusion. Above all, the advanced registered nurse is more involved in policymaking and advocacy to achieve diverse and inclusive workplaces.
Conclusion
Advanced registered nurses should know the scope of their future role and prepare adequately. They should also be conversant with issues affecting the practice and organizations instrumental in advancing the profession. As a nursing professional seeking to influence nursing through forward-thinking leadership, AONL is the best organization for personal and professional growth. Among issues likely to influence advanced practice in the next five years, the impact of workplace diversity cannot be overlooked. The issue (workplace diversity) calls for inclusive workplaces and will likely change the nurse leaders’ scope of work by prompting them to be more involved in policymaking and fostering a culture of inclusivity.
At the current moment, healthcare costs in South Carolina are steadily increasing and it’s causing strain on the consumers as well as the state budgets (Healthcare Policy in South Carolina, n.d.). Lawmakers were seeking resolve, so they planned to expand state’s Medicaid programs, conquer the shortage of healthcare workers, ensure healthcare information is private and secure, and insure those that weren’t insured or even underinsured. The Affordable Care Act authorized states to cover care for pregnant adults up to 138 percent of the federal poverty level which would be 16,643 for an individual and 33,948 for a family of four in 2017 (Healthcare Policy in South Carolina, n.d.). However, it was voluntary on the states part whether they would participate in this expansion and as of Aug 2020, South Carolina hasn’t participated in this expansion. In 2009, the American Recovery and Investment Act required providers to adopt electronic health records by 2015 (Healthcare Policy in South Carolina, n.d.) in an attempt to increase the quality of care but the security aspect was compromised due to electronic breaches, and to add insult to injury, the carelessness of healthcare workers contributed to the breaches by walking away from unsecured computer that displayed protected health information or by emailing health information to the wrong addresses. Healthcare privacy and security is now governed by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) since 1996. In 2013, 46 percent of South Carolina residents were insured through their employers, compared to its neighboring states, South Carolina had the highest percentage of residents enrolled in Medicare. The state’s uninsured rate was approx. 15 percent, 3 percentage points higher than the national rate (Healthcare Policy in South Carolina, n.d.). All these issues and no resolve may have a negative impact on the future nurse educator role because not everyone wants to hear about the problem, we can educate over and over but if there isn’t a solution offered to the issues and we can’t really help provide change or real resources for those in need then educating falls by the wayside. Its like us nurse educators telling them hey, we know what you need to do or what the evidence says to do but the real question is how. How do we create change? Well, that’s where organizations like the American Nurses Association (ANA) comes into play for those educators, not I, that have a desire to advocate on a bigger platform. The ANA allows nurses a seat at the table when these laws are being discussed and/or implemented into practice. I just believe everyone should have access to affordable and quality healthcare.

The three professional nursing organizations that I am interested in that will assist me in my future role as a Public Health Nurse are the American Public Health Association (APHA), the Association of Public Health Nurses (APHN), and the American Nurses Association (ANA). ANA (2023) defines the career of a Public Health Nurse as the practice that includes promoting and protecting the health of populations that base its foundation on nursing skills and social and public health sciences. Reaching out to the public and educating the public about the resources that they have available to them is highly important. The APHN (2023) also assists Public Health Nurses in advancing and promoting their position as Public Health Nurses as well as Improving the health of communities through public health nursing practice and leadership qualities. This association aids the Public Health Nurses build their foundation which will also greatly improve the safe and quality care that the public will receive. APHA (2023) whose foundation focuses on advancing and improving the quantity of equity to achieve population to all individuals. This association also aims to help build a solid foundation for Public Health Nurses to advance their career. All three of these organizations have goals that align with my personal goals and worldview. I will be using all three in my future career. They will be routinely accessed to also remain current on any new information to stay up to date on any changes and current events.
Advanced registered nurses play a critical role in the current healthcare system in America. Advanced registered nurses enhance the access to care by addressing the shortage of physicians in the state. They also work with other healthcare providers and their patients to develop care interventions that utilize evidence-based data. In doing the above, advanced registered nurses practice in accordance with their scope of practice, standards, and philosophy. Therefore, this essay examines the scope of my future role as a nurse informaticist, professional organizations that will affect my scope, and evolving issues that are likely to affect my practice.
Scope of my Future Role as an Advanced Registered Nurse
My future role as an advanced registered nurse is nurse informaticist. Nurse informaticists are nurses who have advanced knowledge and skills in the use of informatics in healthcare. The scope of practice of nurse informaticists is broad. Accordingly, nurse informaticists integrate information management as well as analytical sciences into nursing science. The aim of integrating information from the above disciplines is to understand, define, and communicate the ways in which technology-related data can be used to inform nursing practice. The scope of nurse informatics also extends to the use of health technologies and their related data to make informed decisions in their organizations (Kleib & Nagle, 2018). The ability to make informed decisions using informatics is attributable to the support that health organizations and providers acquire using information processes, information structures, and information technology.
The scope of nurse informaticists also entails undertaking the assessment of organizational needs. Nurse informaticists perform an analysis of the needs of their organizations and the appropriate health technologies that can be embraced to address them. For example, nurse informaticists identify organizational issues such as medication errors and propose the use of technologies such as barcode medication administration systems in solving them (Strudwick et al., 2019). The scope of nurse informaticists also includes planning. Nurse informaticists participate in system development and planning where they develop strategies that are needed for the successful implementation of technologies in their organizations. They also implement, monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of the adopted systems in addressing the needs of their organizations (O’Connor & LaRue, 2021). For example, they incorporate the inputs from other healthcare providers in ensuring the successful implementation, monitoring and evaluation of health information systems.
The scope of practice for nurse informaticists also includes the provision of their services with a consideration of ethics that influence their practice as well as competencies. Nurse informaticists promote safe, efficient and effective use of health information technologies in their organizations. They also ensure that competencies such as continued education, collaboration, leadership, and health policy are upheld in their practice (Kleib & Nagle, 2018). The American Nursing Credentialing Center (ANCC) certifies nurse informaticists. The respective states license the informaticists. The American Nurses Association (ANA) is also another professional body that influences the scope of practice for the nurse informaticists. ANA develops and defines the scope of practice, ethics, and competencies that nurse informaticists should uphold in their practice.
Three Professional Nursing Organizations
Professional nursing organizations play an important role in influencing the scope of practice, personal and professional development of advanced registered nurses. Nurse informaticists can belong to a number of professional nursing organizations. However, I am most likely to join professional organizations that include American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA), American Nursing Informatics Association (ANIA), and American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA). The American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) is a professional organization that was developed with the aim of educating health information professionals. The organization aims at ensuring that health information professionals have the desired knowledge and skills in promoting safe use of health technologies and patient data. The organization also helps health organizations to achieve their desired goals of efficiency by ensuring interconnectedness of the patients with their healthcare providers and organizations. Nurse informaticists benefit by being members of the AHIMA by accessing the educational resources for their continued professional development. They also benefit from networking with other informaticists; hence, sharing information on ways in which health informatics can be advanced (AHIMA, n.d.).
The American Nursing Informatics Association (ANIA) is another professional institution that I can belong as a nurse informaticist. ANIA is a professional organization that was established for nurse informaticists. The organization aims at ensuring the integration of nursing, computer, and information science into nursing and informatics practice. The organization also advocates the adoption of interventions that increase the relevance of nursing informatics as a specialty that is critical to organizational performance and success. ANIA benefits its members through the promotion of professional development opportunities such as training and conferences and networking platform (ANIA, n.d.).
The American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA) is the third professional organization that influences my scope of practice and role. AMIA is a professional organization that was developed with the main aim of transforming healthcare through practice of informatics. AMIA acts as a platform for connecting a community of professionals as well as students that are interested in health informatics. The organization also provides its members the opportunities to collaborate on issues related to application of informatics into research, education and healthcare. The membership to AMIA benefits healthcare providers through the provision of opportunities for professional development and networking (AMIA, n.d.).
One I am Likely to Join
I am most likely to join ANIA. I am likely to join ANIA because it was established with the main aim of meeting the needs of nurse informaticists. The organization is mainly interested in examining the ways in which nurse informaticists can contribute optimally to the performance of their organization. The organization also uses nursing philosophy in supporting interventions or initiatives that improve informatics in nursing and health. The mission, vision and goals of ANIA also align with my nursing philosophy. Accordingly, I believe in doing good and protecting the rights of others. ANIA aims at promoting safe and efficient use of health informatics in nursing practice. The organization strives to achieve its mission through collaboration, research and evidence-based practice. The organization’s focus on the above aspects aligns with my philosophy. My membership with ANIA will improve my practice in a number of ways. Firstly, the organization will contribute to my personal and professional development. The organization will provide me the opportunities to participate in interventions that contribute to continuous improvements in the practice of informatics (Nagle, 2021). The organization will also provide me the educational resources that I needed to develop and advance my competencies as a nurse informaticist. The other way in which my membership to ANIA will contribute to my practice is expanding my professional network. I will collaborate with other nurse informaticists in examining the ways in which nursing practice can be improved. I will also use the organization as a platform to share my knowledge with other providers through participation in activities such as scientific conferences on informatics.
Controversial or Evolving Issue Likely to Affect my Scope
A number of emerging or controversial issues are likely to affect my future scope as a nurse informaticist. One of the issues is the promotion of the meaningful use of health information systems. The use of health information technologies entails the sharing of information between and among healthcare providers. Sharing of information entails the use of EMR systems that are associated with the challenge of maintaining the privacy and confidentiality of data. The use of EMR systems raise ethical issues related to protection of data integrity by health organizations. The implication of the above on my future practice is the increased need for the adoption of EMR systems that uphold data integrity. I also have the responsibility of assisting the organizations that I will be working in the future select effective and efficient systems to ensure meaningful use of data. The other emerging issue that is likely to affect my future scope of practice is the increased use of health technologies to provide personalized patient-care. Health technologies such as Telehealth have largely been embraced to promote patient-centered, continuity in care, and efficiency. However, the technologies raise ethical concerns about the safety and integrity of the patient data (Kleib et al., 2021). Therefore, I will have the responsibility of ensuring the safe and efficient use of health technologies in addressing the health needs of the diverse patient populations.
Conclusion
Nurse informaticists play a critical role in healthcare. Nurse informaticists abide by their scope of practice in addressing the needs of their organizations and patients. Professional organizations have a positive impact on the roles played by nurse informaticists. The organizations provide them with opportunities for professional growth alongside imparting them with knowledge and skills needed to address controversial and emerging needs in their practice. Therefore, nurse informaticists should remain updated on the events that affect their current and future practice.
