I agree with you that in the process of coming up with an EBP topic of research it is imperative for the nurse to develop a PICOT analysis that will be crucial in identifying the feasibility of the problem of research. The nurse requires adequate information about the topic of research in order to understand the greater scope of area of study and be able to build on the already existing knowledge available on a given a chosen research topic. These checks have to be made before conducting the EBP so that the research work generated has a practical application in promoting quality care among the target population (Li et al., 2019). Some of the pertinent questions considered in the PICOT include; will the target population benefit from the findings of the study? will the finding be applicable to the practice? Will the finding support an existing concept or practice or it will build a new theory? Will the finding support the existing nurse theory or will provide evidence for change of existing nurse theory? These are the key areas that the research problem in EBP should address, if not then the problem has to be re=examined and adjusted in order for it to have a clinical relevance and importance to the nurse practice (Duff et al., 2020).

I agree with you that in order to carry out an effective EBP it is imperative to carry out all the six necessary steps so that the entire process is complete and meets the required standards of clinical research process. This is the key to transforming the nursing practices into more efficient, effective and safe for the patients (Stevens, 2020). The EBP in nursing is crucial in developing new ideas or practices or improve on already existing knowledge. As a nursing student, I do believe the EBP is an essential and crucial part in the nursing curriculum that will equip me with adequate skills and knowledge on how best to improve on my nurse practice and experiences. I noticed through my research for this discussion question that there is a range of steps towards the evidence-based research process. The steps that I am going to go through are from the American Journal of nursing. The steps are asking a clinical question in PICOT format, searching for the best evidence, critically appraising the evidence, integrating the evidence, evaluation the outcome, disseminate the results (Melnyk et al., 2010). It is important to use these steps as they create consistency in research. Research studies show that evidence-based practice (EBP) leads to higher quality care, improved patient outcomes, reduced costs, and greater nurse satisfaction than traditional approaches to care (Melnyk et al., 2010).
There are many places to locate sources of information to help determine whether or not a practice problem is appropriate for evidence-based practice change proposals. Within this course we have learned about two sources good to find this information and that is the CINAHL complete and Cochrane Library. CINAHL Complete has a lot of research specific to nursing. The Cochrane Library multiple databases that serve healthcare professionals to help them make effective decisions. The Cochrane Library states that it provides readable, digestible, clinically focused research designed to make informed point-of-care decision-making (n.d.). You can’t go wrong with using either of these sources.

I agree with you that evidence-based research process is detailed process. Therefore, researchers engaging in evidence-based practice adhere to all steps of the evidence-based research routine. Ignoring any of the steps create room for inaccurate research findings. The outcome that can also compromise the credibility of EBP (Torous et al., 2018). Healthcare providers use clinical question in PICOT format in the evidence-based research process. Unfortunately, other healthcare providers struggle to obtain factual information. Insufficient statistical knowledge among nurses may disadvantage them in using EBP. Unfortunately, some healthcare professionals rely on their colleagues in EBP. Similarly, nurses may ignore some steps of the evidence-based research process due to lack of information (Oliver et al., 2019). Reliable sources of information is necessary in implementing evidence-based practice. Healthcare professionals access various sources of information. However, some sources may contain inaccurate information. CINAHL complete and Cochrane Library are reliable sources of information. Depending on the nature of the research, researchers may locate right sources of information.

As an advanced practice nurse, we must strive to improve ourselves and the nursing profession. We must be open-minded to our patients and our profession. When a problem arises, we should work hard to find a solution and better improve the profession of nursing. Evidence based practice is essential for quality care and quality improvement.
There are five key steps of evidence-based practice which include identifying a question, researching information utilizing relevant research, evaluating the evidence, applying the evidence into practice, and reevaluating implemented evidence and make changes if necessary (DeNisco & Barker, 2019).
The first step of evidence-based practice is identifying a question. In our profession we may ask ourselves “is this the best way to do this” or “how can we make this better.” When we begin to ask ourselves questions and have passion this is the beginning of improving our profession. Evidence-based practice projects begin by utilizing the PICOT method. PICOT stands for population, intervention, comparison, outcome, and time (DeNisco & Barker, 2019). Identifying theses essential questions will assist the advanced practice nurse to having effective and successful evidence-based practice projects. My hospital is a magnet hospital that has many resources to assist in evidence-based practice projects. Our magnet coordinator is available to assist in providing feedback at the very beginning of identifying a question and problem and will assist in the success of our projects.
The second and third step of evidence-based practice is researching information and evaluating then evidence. The internet has improved these vital next steps, but with so much information and data it is sometimes hard to find relevant and correct information. There are many databases to assist in finding evidence and two that I utilize is PubMed and CINAHL Complete. CINAHL complete provides evidence-based practice journals and research, and PubMed provides access to abstracts and reviews in nursing (DeNisco & Barker, 2019). Utilizing a library such as the one thru Grand Canyon University is highly effective in researching information. It is important to be able to assess the quality of evidence and research. There are many distinct types of evidence and the skill of assessing the quality of evidence takes time. Personally, I am still working on this skill, and am glad to have the opportunity to go back to school and improve my skill so I can improve the profession of nursing.
The fourth step of applying the evidence is practice is where you will be able to trial your solution to an identified problem. Normally the new practice merges with your current practice. In my hospital we have nursing guidelines that are followed and sometimes improvements are found and can be made. Identifying a problem and implementing a solution takes time and education to everyone involved. This leads to the fifth and last step of reevaluating and making changes if necessary. It is important through all the process to be open-minded and work hard to reach your goal. Sometimes, this means making changes to your plan or solution, and this does not mean failure but is an opportunity for growth and improvement.

it is true that the process of evidence based research has six steps. The six steps include asking a guided clinical question, searching for suitable evidence, analysis of the searched evidence, integrating the evidence into clinical practice, evaluation of outcomes, and sharing information about the outcomes (Shelton et al., 2018). Every step is important in improving the quality of healthcare services. Therefore, healthcare providers incorporate every step of evidence-based research. PICOT statement creates a foundation of asking questions that initiate the research process. The PICOT is an acronym for P patient or Population, I intervention, C comparison, O outcome, T time frame. Evidence-based research aims at addressing particular healthcare issues. As a result, healthcare professionals rely on credible sources of information when researching (Wiltsey Stirman et al., 2019). However, getting credible sources of information may be challenging due to the mixed up. CINAHL and PubMed is recommended because they have resources that meet scientific research standards. Incorporating all the steps of EBP is important because it ensures that and effective result that can lead to quality improvement is produced.
