My worldviews have become a melting pot of how I was raised and my own life experiences. I was raised Roman Catholic as a child. I attended both public and Lutheran universities. The state school I attended was extremely diverse, with the vast majority of the student body identifying as non-white. I do agree with you that an individual’s cultural background has a significant effect on the individual’s worldview. Our understanding of the world and the people is shaped by how one has been raised up, the religious and cultural practices and beliefs that were instilled in us at an early stage of our life. However, in the Christian perspective or any other religious perspective, there is a common understanding that the human life is sacred and there is need to handle it with utmost care, showing love, compassion, patience and respect to one another (Isaac et al., 2016). I do agree with you on the fact that in order to develop culturally competent healthcare workers, there is need to incorporate cultural awareness and competence training in the nurse training curriculum (Swihart & Martin, 2019). The nurse training institutions and schools have the responsibility of preparing the nurse for the future practice by equipping them with relevant soft skills and knowledge to help them navigate through the murky waters of delivering quality healthcare to a highly diverse US population. In an increasingly diverse, multicultural society, nurses are challenged to provide effective care to patients of all religions, races, and cultures. My personal worldviews are multidimensional, I have a strong faith in God I believe that is what guides me to be the best human first than nurse. Culture is a great influence of our behavior, believes and values and to teach how to treat people related to their ethical backgrounds. The religion in my family is predominantly Jehovah witness and their beliefs and values are so different in many facets. I am Catholic and I am raising my children as Catholics as well. Having been around the Jehovah witness religion I knew about certain things that can or cannot occur. One of the biggest factors is receiving blood.

That can be huge ethical dilemma as a nurse because you want to provide the best care possible, but your personal beliefs can interfere with how your own perception can interpret how you care for the patient. “Jehovah’s Witnesses refuses all blood transfusions. Jehovah’s Witnesses and their relatives are taught by their faith that it is important for them to ‘keep Jehovah’s organization clean’. One of the ways in which they are encouraged to do so is to inform those in positions of authority about the indiscretions of others. Because family members may also speak to those in authority in the organization, it is important that each patient is asked in private what information may be passed on to relatives. If a patient elects to receive a ‘forbidden’ blood product there could be grave social implications if that decision becomes known. In such circumstances it may be necessary to make special provisions to ensure that unexpected visitors do not become aware of any treatment. Indiscreet talk between all members of hospital staff should be avoided to guarantee patient confidentiality” (EMAP 2021). Nurses have an obligation to do whatever their patient ask of them including their choices they make about their health decisions.

As a clinical leader within the hospital, one of the barriers faced is staffing. Thought out the aftermath of the pandemic, many bedside nurses started looking for employment in other avenues of health care. The obstacle of high turn-over and short staffing was beginning to dwindle the remaining staff. The challenge to keep the core staff was eminent.

The process of assessing the environment where the nurses spent their down time presented the  opportunity to create calm spaces. A medication room was created with a low light tree and soothing music. The room also contained other amenities such as “scream here” pillow, a punching bag, stress balls, and adult coloring books. In addition, the room was equipped with a massage chair and snacks.  Entering this area was like entering another world where the hustle and stress of the day looming outside the door could not find you. This small change allowed the staff to take quality time for themselves, expressed the gratitude for the work they were doing, and helped to improve their working environment.

Covid has also taken human interaction to almost a complete halt.  The social health of the staff was also at risk, so the next area converted was the break room. This became their own private café’. A coffee bar was created, soft chairs were appropriately with a couple of small tables, and live plants where added. Staff were able to sit during break times and socialize.

These small changes took the staff from a difficult work environment to one where the tasks at hand did not seem so daunting. The healer was slowly learning to heal themselves.

My personal worldview is based in Christianity. I grew up in Catholic school, and discovered God through the Catholic faith. As I grew older, I was drawn towards Christianity and it seemed that I was able to explore God more freely and experience the Holy spirit on a different less regimented level. I believe all of us, in one way or another, has to discover our higher power at our own pace. I believe everything is connected, and the Universe is God’s creation. 

Working at Loma Linda University (LLU), I have grown to appreciate the spiritual influence of healing. LLU is a Seventh Day Adventist University Hospital. The Pastor sings and plays guitar throughout the unit every day. Many Doctors pray with patients and incorporate the body mind and spirit as a whole picture within the plan of care. There is very strong spiritual support for the staff, and we always pray before starting the shift. 

One thing that I have learned from LLU, is the notion that we are here to serve one another. That is our main purpose in life, to serve one another with love and compassion. Jesus led through his life here on Earth with focus on service, love, forgiveness and suffering. Jesus was the complete opposite of the rulers and kings in his time. The leaders of that time ruled through fear, control and power. Jesus claimed not only to be king, he claimed to be God, but yet exuded love and sacrifice and intermingled with the sick, poor and afflicted. 

As an advanced registered nurse, my spiritual competence and scope of practice will always be shaped by and related to my spiritual principles. Healing and caring for someone, not just on the physical level, but the emotional and spiritual level will increase positive patient outcomes. These deep-seated roots of spirituality will help keep me open minded and guide me through tests of strength and resiliency. Recognizing the internal signs of stereotypical thoughts or biases influence the growth of my inner self continuously throughout my life, relationships and career.

 I agree with you that spiritual influences healing. Most believers turn to God in times of crisis. God is perceived as a redeemers by many Christians. Therefore, Christians are always reminded to stay prayerful and maintain their unwavering faith in God when they are in misfortunes, especially, when they are sick. Unfortunately, some people out of pain and frustrations turn to other source of consolation (Grill et al., 2020). However, those Christians with strong faith and connection with God depend on spiritual healing. Surprisingly, some healthcare professionals are prayerful to the extent that they pray for their patients. Prayerful healthcare providers believe that they are in their positions to serve God (Nita, 2019). Therefore, praying is a common spiritual engagement for prayerful people. Jesus led through his life here on Earth with focus on service, love, forgiveness and suffering. Therefore, suffering and pain is part of spirituality.  Believers should prepare for tribulations by maintaining prayerful life.

My personal worldview has been shaped by my experiences, family and friends, and religious beliefs. Growing up my parents had different religious beliefs, and both stressed the importance of respecting other’s beliefs and opinions. They would always tell me that no two people would ever share all the same beliefs or opinions. They allowed me to take my experiences and curiosities and create my own views and opinions. All my beliefs may not be the same as my parents or even other Christians, but I believe this does not make me any less of a person or a Christian. I grew up to be open-minded and compassionate of others and their beliefs. My father would always tell me not to talk about sex, religion, or politics with anyone. He would explain to me that people would take my beliefs and use them against me, or I would offend someone by sharing my thoughts or opinion.

Initially growing up I believed my father was correct and I would remain silent and just listen when others would talk about those subjects. It took me years to realize that sitting in silence does not show respect for others but could ultimately shut doors and make people feel as if I did not care. I loved listening to other people’s beliefs and opinions, but how I expressed myself I realized I was missing an opportunity to connect with them. I learned how to ask appropriate questions and truly listen and hear someone. I am still growing and learning, but I feel like I am better at expressing myself and connecting with others. 

As a nurse it is imperative that we listen to our patients, respect one another, and show empathy for others. Cultural competency and cultural awareness are essential components of being and advanced practice nurse. As a nurse it is imperative to be self-aware of our own beliefs and opinions and provide mutual respect for our patients and our community. Being self-aware and seeking knowledge of other people’s culture and beliefs is a lifelong adventure (DeNisco & Barker, 2019). We must listen, communicate, and respect our patients and community.

It all begins with accepting our own opinions and acknowledging that our beliefs shape us into who we are today. We must seek basic knowledge of different cultures, religions, and communities. Although we may learn the basics, we must accept that we will never fully know everything. Showing respect and listening to the needs of others will assist in gaining trust so we can provide quality care and improve the lives and overall health of others. It is important that we ask questions and strive to be better and grow as individuals. I hope to continue my journey of cultural awareness and self-awareness and be the absolute best for my patients and community. I feel as though all the lessons I have gained in my life and experiences will help me continue to become the best nurse I can be.

 I agree with you that experiences shape individual worldview and belief systems. The immediate environment also contribute to personal worldview. Children learn a lot from their parents when growing up. Therefore, religious alignment among children depicts their parent’s religiosity. Most children born and bred in Christian background grow to appreciate Christianity more than any other religious affiliations. People with different backgrounds may display different religious and political views (de Vries et al., 2019). However, other people due to their strong religious belief lack open-mindedness. As a result, understanding different religious and spiritual views may be challenging.

Parents train their children on discipline. Therefore, teaching youngsters about Christianity is part of perfect raising of children in religious background. Still, children may change their religious perspective after interacting with different ideas (Gallegos & Segrin, 2019). Also, disbelief in spiritual world may destruct people from their primary religious identity. Nurses and healthcare providers have their religious affiliation. Healthcare providers attend to patients with various health complications. Therefore, other nurses pray together with the sick and their families as a sign of passion and compassion.

 My personal worldview has been shaped by a variety of experiences; from childhood to adulthood. I was raised in a catholic church by my mother, who was an immigrant from the Philippines. Because of the spanish influence in the Philippines, many cultural and religious influences are present from Spain like Catholicism, rites and rituals, some mysticism and superstition, and a strong sense of loyalty to family. These influences laid the foundation for my mother’s upbringing and her raising of me. Although my mother tried to do right by raising me in her faith, her actions spoke differently. I never felt connected to Christianity as the example I had (my mother) was decidedly not what the catholic church was teaching. It made me uncomfortable how someone could be so hypocritical in their life. Additionally, it never resonated with me to be catholic or Christian; to this day I still grapple with the idea that in Christian faith, the only way to “heaven” is to surrender to Jesus Christ. 

Despite my feelings on Jesus being the way and the life, I always wanted to find a connection to the divine, I knew and I felt within me that divinity was present around and in me, but didn’t know how. I knew that my experiences from childhood (witness to domestic violence) was for a purpose in service to children and others in the same situation, that is why I choose to work in pediatrics now. As I grew into an adult, I found yoga and a connection to the divine that was so fulfilling and enlightening. As I dived deeper into yoga practice and philosophy I found that there were many similarities between the foundation of catholic faith and the principles of yoga. For example, in Christianity, “I am” is how God defines himself. In yoga and traditional Hindu tradition, “all is ma” meaning all is divine. With what I experienced in my childhood, hearing that all is divine, that everything is god, no matter how painful and horrible, that if we remove our own attachments of bad and good and SURRENDER to what is, we experience the divine, and maybe even love it. 

 

Since finding my connection to the divine through yoga, I have finally found the words and the worldview that people will find a way to connect themselves to divinity, in a way that makes sense to them. All people have a right to spiritual enlightenment, a right to a fulfilling life of what their experiences have led them to, a right to care and love despite where they are or who they are or were. DeNisco (2019) describes that spirituality is a component of holistic health and that it can be a large influence on the physical health of the person when they are well and when they are unwell (p. 672). In this, I see all my patients in this light and my practice is in service to those along their journey to fulfilling those rights. My hopis to be a leader in love and service to my patients and support them in their spiritual journey as they navigate the physical world across the spectrum of health and disease.

it is true that individual experience from childhood to adulthood shape people’s opinion on religion, politics, and other important aspects of human life. Children when growing are aligned to their parents. Therefore, these younger ones learn from listening and observing from their parents. Most religious parents together with their children are involved in religious rites and rituals (Ransome, 2020). Therefore, parents pass their religious aspects to their children through association.  Similarly, children observe their parents praying when they are sick for spiritual intervention. Unfortunately, as people grow and interact with various religious organizations some inherited thoughts may not make sense (MahdiNejad et al., 2020). As a result, some people may change their religious attachment due to ideological dilemmas. However, spiritual connection is important for believers going through hardships. Healthcare providers attend to patients with various illnesses.  Some healthcare professionals acknowledge the role of spirituality in the healing process. Therefore, other nurses pray for the sick and their loved ones in hospitals.

According to DeGraff (2017), Worldview is a collection of deeply held beliefs about how we interpret and experience the world. The worldview is learned by individual experiences throughout our lives, and everyone is different. With that said, my worldview encompasses the belief that Jesus is the son of God and the Holy Spirit. The belief of angels, Virgin of Guadalupe, and Virgin Mary who is the mother of Jesus Christ. Moreover, I believe in having good morals, respect, justice, equality, love one another, compassion, empathy, patience, honesty, assist the less fortunate because we are all children of God and treat others as they were your family such as a father, mother, sister and/or grandmother. Lastly, I believe in working hard and always being thankful for my job and education because I can help many people through their difficult journey either on their road to recovery or in their last moments in this world. My worldview as explained, defines me as a nurse to care for our patients, not only physically but spiritually as well.

As an advanced registered nurse, it is important to have mutual respect with patients, be flexible and humble to be open to the cultural dimensions of each patient (DeNisco, 2024).  This will help me create a great rapport with patients and be able to provide a plan of care to improve his or her health. It is important to listen, build trust and communicate with patients. If there is a word that is unfamiliar ask the translator to investigate further the meaning so that multicultural communication is avoided.

Ethnocentrism impedes the delivery of culturally competent nursing care (DeNisco, 2024). As an advanced registered nurse working in collaboration with other health care providers, it is important to see the viewpoint of others than just our own to avoid assumptions and/or bias that can cause harm and pain to patients.

It is especially important to see the patient, not just for their illness but to consider and be competent in their beliefs, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds. We all have differences in worldviews and cultures, so the patients’ view of the world and their culture should also be respected.
