Evidence-based practice allows us to use research already conducted and apply it to our nursing practice with a problem-solving approach (Helbig, 2022). This allows us to use the best evidence from research allowing nurses and medical staff to provide safe quality care which achieves the best outcomes possible.

A PICOT statement or question is utilized to identify and study a nursing or medical practice problem (Academic Research Bureau, 2023). A nursing practice problem is usually identified during a patient assessment and usually deals with the patient’s condition whereas a medical practice problem deals with the pathology of a patient. When doing a nursing practice problem, the nurse assesses how the patient is responding to health conditions. An example of a nursing practice problem would be a patient who comes into the emergency room with a headache, physical symptoms, or a fever. Assessing the patient’s condition can lead the nurse to a nurse practice problem. For it to be a medical practice problem the nurse must realize that the patient’s pathology may need to be assessed, like if the doctor thinks they are having a stroke. In most cases, a PICOT question is based on a nursing practice problem, not a medical one.

twentieth century the focus of work was on performing the right processes. In
the twenty-first-century the focus is on obtaining the right outcomes” (p. 4).
The purpose of using evidence to guide practice is to promote positive
outcomes. How do you see yourself as a change agent guiding others to move from
a process focus to an outcomes focus? Discuss this in relationship to your area
of concentration – practice and/or education. Elaborate the rationale behind
the change from process to outcomes.
