DQ2 Adhering to ethical principles and protection of human
subjects are important considerations in
all forms of research. How stringent or similar
should these ethical principles be to the standards placed on the
conduction of clinical and/or educational research? Offer examples where
controversy exists regarding application of ethical principles in evidence-based
practice projects, best practices in education versus clinical research? Be
sure to address HIPAA and FERPA depending on your focus – clinical practice vs
academic education.

At the rehabilitation center where I work, the PICOT framework is used to create interventions proven to improve patient outcomes. Clinical question generation and study design can benefit from a systematic approach epitomized by the acronym PICOT, which stands for Population, Intervention, Comparison, Outcome, and Time. This approach helps my company enhance processes and make sure they are consistent with the most recent study findings.

The population consideration aids in determining the target population of rehabilitative care. Patients in this category may have undergone orthopedic surgery or suffered a stroke and are now in the rehabilitation process. The intervention phase follows, and it’s this phase that decides on the specific mode of treatment, such as physical activity or mental drills. The comparative element establishes a standard against which the intervention can be evaluated.

The findings emphasize the predicted outcomes, such as enhanced mobility and reduced pain. Time is the final consideration since it defines how long after the intervention we can expect to see outcomes and what effect they will have.

By using the PICOT framework, our hospital is able to customize its care to the unique requirements of each individual patient. It can also advocate for care based on evidence and refine its interventions over time to maximize effectiveness.
