Reflection on Knowledge
A baccalaureate prepared nurse has the responsibility to improve care and service delivery. They achieve this through training to gain knowledge on various areas of competencies known as the Essentials of Baccalaureate Education in Nursing. Through thus advanced knowledge base, baccalaureate prepared nurse has the ability to initiate safety and quality management programs to improve positive patient outcomes. Over the cause, I have learnt various competencies have equipped me with adequate knowledge and skills, preparing me for high responsibilities in the practice environment. One of the essentials that I have met through this course is scholarship and evidence-based practice. Learning the competencies associated with this outcome has give me a better understanding of using quality evidence from research and integrating into practice to solve clinical problems and improve patient outcomes (AACN, 2020). Other essentials that I have improved include understanding of health policy and the regulatory environment, patient care technology, prevention and population health, and leadership for quality and patient safety.
I will use the knowledge gain to improve practice by integrating evidence-based practice. Evidence-based practice involves using knowledge of theory, combined with best evidence, and clinical judgement to make changes that lead to improvements (Poorchangizi et al., 2019). For example, I will integrate the essentials to improve practice by pioneering continuous quality improvement programs and patient safety initiatives. Such programs are based on identification of a clinical problem, leading to research to seek the best quality evidence available to solve the clinical challenge. Such initiatives improve patient outcomes because they focus on quality, efficiency, effectiveness, and patient safety (AACN, 2021). For example, a quality improvement program to reduce wait time for outpatient patients is likely to enhance quality and patient satisfaction because of efficiency.
The course will be instrumental in building pre-licensure knowledge because I have learnt theoretical concepts and practical lessons on the challenges and other elements of the practice environment. Thus, this gives me a solid knowledge base to make clinical decisions supported by research. The knowledge will be helpful because the pre-licensure examination tests what nurses need to know and how well they can integrate their understanding into practice.

Review and reflect on the knowledge that you have gained from this course. Based on your review and reflection, write at least 3 paragraphs on the following:
- As you reflect on the American Association of Colleges of Nursing’s (AACN’s) Essentials of Baccalaureate Education in Nursing, what Essentials did this course assist you in meeting?
- How will you integrate your newly learned theory into current practice?
- How will practiced integration of these Essentials improve patient outcomes?
- How did this course content help to build on your knowledge from your pre-licensure nursing program?
- The main post should include at least 1 scholarly reference to research sources published within the past 5 years, and all sources should be cited using APA format.
Improving patient safety management in an evolving healthcare system has emerged and has been a priority to many healthcare organizations. Nurses have the most direct interaction with patients out of any other healthcare professionals, therefore it is essential to involve them in implementing and improving patient safety to deliver the utmost quality care (Ji et al., 2021).
Reflecting on the AACN’s Essentials of Baccalaureate Education in Nursing, this course helped me broaden my knowledge on essential II: Basic Organizational and Systems Leadership for Quality Care and Patient Safety. The course offered various step-by-step system on how to develop and improve methods in providing a safe and patient-centered high-quality care. Implementing skills with leadership to focus on patient safety can be challenging at times, but this course offered methods and tools to aid healthcare providers to deliver care with patient safety as a priority. It reflects the important role of nurses as part of enhancing patient safety in any clinical settings.
The discussion board topics from this course allowed me to review and understand how quality improvement process is applied at our workplace, and because of this, it gave me the confidence to participate and involve myself in implementing and enhancing protocols to improve our workflow and to better our understanding on safety policies to establish patient safety when delivering care. Taking this class encouraged me to become more active in our unit-based team (UBT) and participate in projects to improve our unit’s performance, create workplace safety and injury preventions, and collaborate with our leaders/managements to have a safer work environment to prevent errors and improve patient safety.
This course reminded me that nurses play a very important role in our patients’ health/well-being. We have to be our patients’ advocate in many aspects of their care, whether it is in preventative, management of chronic illnesses, or in critical situations. Patient safety should always be the priority and is essential when delivering high quality care.

Reflecting on the American Association of Colleges of Nursing’s (AACN’s) Essentials of Baccalaureate Education in Nursing, I believe that taking this course has truly assisted me in meeting a majority of the areas:
-
Essential II: Basic Organizational and Systems Leadership for Quality Care and Patient Safety
-
Essential III: Scholarship for Evidence Based Practice
-
Essential IV: Information Management and Application of Patient Care Technology
-
Essential V: Health Care Policy, Finance, and Regulatory Environments
-
Essential VI: Interprofessional Communication and Collaboration for Improving Patient Health Outcomes
-
Essential VII: Clinical Prevention and Population Health
(American Association of College of Nursing, 2008)
I found this course to be extremely challenging for me. For one, I currently do not work as a Nurse and I had a difficult time tying in my past and current experiences with the topic on our discussion boards and papers. Secondly, I honestly don’t really pay attention to the policy and procedures, and due to time constraints, I hardly join in on our QA meetings. Because of these reasons, I really had to do a lot of reading and research to try to understand the whole process that goes with it.
I learned a great deal from not only the assignments and live chats, but also the discussions and experiences that were shared by others in the class. This class has truly opened my eyes to the importance of the QI process in the workplace. Paying attention, being open minded, being a voice and getting involved can make a huge difference in improving the safety and quality of care that we provide for our patients. I’m usually soft spoken at work due to fear of throwing out a bad idea, but having this new found knowledge has sparked an interest and curiosity in integrating what I’ve learned into my current workplace. “It is important that nurses become leaders for improving quality” (Sherwood & Barnsteiner, 2021, p.177).

The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) write in The Essentials of Baccalaureate Education in Nursing that it is recommended for prospective nursing students and current professionals to acquire a bachelor’s degree. Obtaining a baccalaureate education in nursing benefits both patient outcomes and in the career advancement of the healthcare professional. AACN (2008) emphasizes that higher education allows the development of skills and knowledge to provide evidence-based patient-centered care and safety, quality improvement and management skills that are required in today’s complex healthcare systems.
This safety and quality improvement course has assisted me in learning some of the Nine Essentials created by the AACN such as Essential II: Basic Organizational and Systems Leadership for Quality Care and Patient Safety and Essential VI: Interprofessional Communication and Collaboration for Improving Patient Health Outcomes for example. These are important concepts to integrate into one’s nursing practice through the use of systems and productive collaboration with the interdisciplinary team. Quality improvement approaches such as the Plan-Do-Study-Act cycle is designed to monitor and continuously improve the quality of work by understanding the customer’s needs and developing specifications through statistical data collection (Sherwood & Barnsteiner, 2021).
The course content obtained has helped widen my knowledge about safety and quality improvement in my nursing practice compared to my prior knowledge in my pre-licensure nursing program. It has instilled the awareness and necessity of applying research and evidence-based practices in making clinical decisions. Applying safety and quality processes into my practice will allow for the continuous improvement of safe patient care, increased patient satisfaction and outcomes.

This class has taught me that continuous quality improvement will always be a part of nursing practice. Our practice will always be evolving and we will always be learning new ways to deal with old issues or new issues. Research is an important part of quality improvement as we should always base our actions and implementations on evidence. Taking falls in the hospital for instance, there has been great research done on different kinds of fall risk assessment skills and which one would be best utilized in a hospital setting. Reading all these articles and research on falls greatly opened my eyes and I was in my in to know there are quite a whole lot of scales out there that can be very useful that have all been based on evidence from other hospitals.
