Cardiovascular disease is one of the leading causes of death in the United States. Coronary artery disease (CAD) also known as atherosclerosis is caused by plaque buildup in the cardiovascular system. “According to the AHA, in 2018, 16.5 million people over 20 years of age have coronary artery disease” (Regmi, M & Siccardi, M, 2023) When plaque builds up, “the arterial walls harden and thicken, which narrows the lumen of the vessel “ (Falkner, 2022) and restricts blood flow. Comorbidities such as hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and diabetes contribute to CAD.

Preventative measures are necessary to reduce the risk of CAD. Recommendations include diet, exercise, tobacco cessation, and managing blood pressure. Heart healthy diets should be enforced to include low sodium intake, increased fiber, fruit, nuts, lean meats and fish. A regular exercise program should be implemented to include the recommended 150 minutes of moderate intensity activity. Tobacco use increases the risk of CAD and should be stopped. “Healthcare providers should provide assistance on readiness to quit, with behavioral and pharmacological interventions” (Regmi, M & Siccardi, M, 2023). Blood pressure management can include diet modifications or the use of prescription medications. If medications are necessary, it is important to remain compliant in daily use.
