- Develop a pamphlet to inform parents and caregivers about environmental factors that can affect the health of infants.

- Explain how the environmental factor you selected can potentially affect the health or safety of infants.
The first effect of air pollution on infants is respiratory problems. Decrue et al. (2022) noted that the breathing rates of infants are more rapid than in adults, and this makes them more vulnerable to air pollutants such as nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and fine particulate matter (PM2.5), leading to respiratory problems such as bronchitis. Air pollution also increases the risk of infections in infants by weakening their immune systems. Air pollution also affects their developmental issues. Rivas et al. (2019) noted that air pollution affects infant’s cognitive and brain development. Air pollution can also cause SIDS. Decrue et al. (2022) argue that infants exposed to air pollution face an increased risk of SIDS.

This health promotion plan aims to empower and educate caregivers and parents to create a healthy and safe environment for their infants, focusing on addressing air pollution. We can improve the overall well-being and health of infants and decrease their exposure to air pollution. One of the strategies is education and awareness. Rosário Filho et al. (2021) noted that caregivers and parents should be educated and made aware of factors that increase air pollution and how to prevent infants from inhaling harmful substances. Educational materials such as posters and brochures can be developed explaining the risks and prevention of air pollution on infant health (Rosário Filho et al., 2021). Education and awareness can also be done through community events and workshops.
The caregivers and parents should also be urged to promote eco-friendly practices that can improve the quality of air such as using natural materials and toxic cleaning products in the household, using public transport, walking instead of relying on private vehicles, and carpooling (Rosário Filho et al., 2021). Another strategy is supportive advocacy and policy. Air pollution can be prevented by advocating for stricter policies and regulations with the aim to protect infant health. The last strategy is collaborating with partners such as community organizations to provide parents and caregivers resources needed for learn more about air pollution (Rosário Filho et al., 2021).

The growth, development, and learned behaviors that occur during the first year of infancy have a direct effect on the individual throughout a lifetime. For this assignment, research an environmental factor that poses a threat to the health or safety of infants and develop a health promotion that can be presented to caregivers.
Create a 10-12 slide PowerPoint health promotion, with speaker notes, that outlines a teaching plan. For the presentation of your PowerPoint, use Loom to create a voice over or a video. Include an additional slide for the Loom link at the beginning, and an additional slide for references at the end.
In developing your PowerPoint, take into consideration the health care literacy level of your target audience, as well as the demographic of the caregiver/patient (socioeconomic level, language, culture, and any other relevant characteristic of the caregiver) for which the presentation is tailored.

As a result, the adoption of measures that optimize their health and safety during this period of growth is important. Environmental factors pose a considerable threat to the health and safety of the infants. An example of such a factor of focus in this presentation is smoking. Smoking predisposes infants to a wide range of health problems, which can affect their health and wellbeing at their later stages of life. Nurses and other healthcare providers should empower populations with knowledge and skills of minimizing infants’ exposure to smoke (CRUME, 2019; Gould et al., 2020; Tsai et al., 2018). Therefore, this presentation examines infants exposure to smoke, prevention, and resources for use by the population.

As noted initially, the selected environmental factor that threatens the health and safety of infants is smoking. Exposure to tobacco smoke is a serious health risk to infants. According to statistics, the exposure rate of children to tobacco smoke remains high despite the decline over the past decade. The analysis of statistics of tobacco smoke exposure rate from 1988 to 2014 reveals that the exposure rate dropped from 87.5% to 25.2% in these years. The exposure rate did not change between 2011 and 2014. Exposure to tobacco smoking is indirect. It can occur during pregnancy or after pregnancy. The global exposure rate of children to smoke is currently estimated to be 40%. Factors such as socioeconomic status, race, and ethnicity influences the rate of infants exposure to tobacco smoke in the USA. For example, the exposure rate among non-Hispanic blacks is 50.3%, poor families (47.9%), living in rental housing (38.6%), and having less than high school education (30.7%) (CRUME, 2019; Gould et al., 2020; Tsai et al., 2018).
- Create a health promotion plan that can be presented to caregivers to address the environmental factor and improve the overall health and well-being of infants.

In the United States one of the top causes of mortality in infants is linked to low-birth-weight infants and prematurity (less than 37 weeks (about 8 and a half months) of gestation, a low birth weight is less than 5 pounds and 8 ounces (about 226.8 g). There are several risk factors for LBW including placental issues, inadequate weight gain of mother, smoking, infections during pregnancy. Low birth weight can have serious complications, long term and short-term effects and can impact the life of the newborn and family as whole, including mental retardation, visual and hearing impairments, poor developmental growth, and delay. LBW often has long term difficulties such as emotional and social problems and learning difficulties. Also, they have an increased risk for sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). (UK Healthcare. Low birth weight is one of the primary factors that contribute to racial ethnic disparities. “Non-Hispanic black infants had a significantly higher IMR compared to non-Hispanic white infants, 7.4 versus 2.7. Higher IMRs were observed in infants born to mothers who were uninsured (18.9), unmarried (6.8), and living in a neighborhood with a higher risk score (7.3) (p<0.01)”. (Clements, E. et al). African American for LBW rate has been more than twice the rate compared with white infant’s low birth weight according to the statistics. Adequate interventions are needed to decrease mortality rates related to low birth weight such as education on early pregnancy, prenatal, post-neonatal services in the community accessible to the population. Early interventions help prevent having higher rates in vulnerable sectors or ethnic groups. Poverty can be a barrier to accessing proper health care services and education level. For example, not being able to afford health insurance, formula, and medications are disadvantages in a pregnancy, and can lead to low-birth-weight newborn. Adequate community-based education and resources are needed to prevent conditions such as LBW.

The selected environmental factor is air pollution. Air pollution is the existence of detrimental substances in the air including particulate matter, toxic chemicals, and gases, which can be harmful to human health when inhaled (Decrue et al., 2022). Air pollution is mostly caused by burning fumes and industry smoke. About 66 million tons of pollution were released into the atmosphere in the US in 2022 (Decrue et al., 2022).
Extremely low birth weight (ELBW) babies are those born with a birth weight of less than 1000 grams (2lb, 3oz). In most instances, extremely low birth weight infants are also born prematurely, usually born at 27 weeks. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) (2023) preterm or premature birth affected about 1 in every 10 infants born in the country. Low birth weight babies face higher risks during their early life that include increased chances of infections, and a leading cause of infant death. These babies also pose significant socioeconomic risk to parents, may encounter neurodevelopmental challenges and functional effects of their low growth (Berhane et al., 2019). The infants may also have a harder time feeding, gaining weight and even keeping infections at bay. These infants are susceptible to complications like low oxygen levels at birth and trouble keeping warm.
Health disparities, especially those relative to ethnic and cultural groups, have significant contributions to low birth weight babies (Pravia et al., 2020). For instance, women from low-income racial minority groups like African-American and Hispanic and smoke are more likely to give birth to low weight babies compared to those in middle-class and more affluent neighborhoods and white women. Again, culture and ethnicity influence diets which are a major contributing factor to the increasing levels of low birth weight babies in the country. This happens as the mother does not eat healthy enough to protect the child (Berhane et al., 2019). Again, babies born to teenage mothers have increased risk of being born prematurely and with low birth weight. Multiple pregnancies also increase the chances of having premature and low birth weigh babies.
Having resources to support preterm infants and their families is essential because of the increased cost of care of the babies. Such services are important as they help the mothers get sufficient resources and advice on the delicate care required for their low weight and in most cases, preterm babies. One such resource in the community is the Nationwide Children’s Hospital (2023) which is a Magnet recognized health care system dedicated to improving the lives of infants, especially those with special conditions like low birth weight. The resource supports these families by providing information and services to cater to the special needs and improve overall management of the babies.
