The nursing profession makes up the largest segment of the healthcare system. The profession has been continuously changing and evolving over the years to meet the increasing consumer demand, while at the same time improve the quality of care provided. On the other hand, nursing professional development is used to refer to the process of improving the quality of service delivery through continuous education and training. Through professional development, nurses can advance their careers and remain updated on the latest technology, techniques, and different ways of practice (Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, & Institute of Medicine, 2010). This paper will focus on discussing the Institution of Medicine’s (IOM) report that was published in 2010, and its impact on nursing practice.

IOM Summary of Four Messages and Significance to Nursing Practice

The IOM 2010 report acknowledges that the United States has everything it takes to advance the healthcare system by providing quality services that are seamless and evidence-based, resulting in improved care outcomes. This report conveys four messages: (a) ensuring that nurses use their full educational and training potential when providing care services; (b) advancing nursing education and training by improving the education system; (c) preparing nurses to become full partners with other healthcare professionals, thus having the opportunity to redesign and improve the current healthcare system; and (d) improving the data collection process (Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, & Institute of Medicine, 2010).

In several ways, this report contributes to the revolutionization of nursing practice. Allowing nurses to realize their full potential, for example, aids in broadening the current limiting nurses’ scope of practice, allowing the healthcare system to reap the full benefits of nursing training knowledge and skills inpatient care. As a result, improving nursing education will help to attract more students to the nursing profession, increasing the overall number of nurses in the United States (Kearney, 2019). Graduates will also seek additional education, increasing the number of nursing specialists and thus improving the quality of care provided. The full partnership will help to improve teamwork in the healthcare system, while an improved data collection process will save time and improve patient care efficiency.

The Institute of Medicine (IOM) is a non-profit organization that works to develop the nursing sector in the United States by providing critical nursing advice. Its views are respected because they inform and influence legislative decisions. The Institute of Medicine (IOM) published a report titled The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health in 2010. The report made three major recommendations: Transforming Practice, Transforming Education, and Transforming Leadership, all with the goal of fostering synergies and instilling better practices and outcomes in the sector. This paper will examine the report’s content and assess its relevance to the healthcare system.

Professional Development of Nursing Professionals

Description:

Review the Institute of Medicine’s 2010 report “The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health.” Write a 7501,000 word paper discussing the influence of the IOM report on nursing practice. Include the following:

  1. Summarize the four messages outlined in the IOM report and explain why these are significant to nursing practice.

Professional Association Membership

Professional organizations play an important role in the development of advanced practice nurses. Advanced practice nurses utilize them as platforms for advancing their knowledge and skills in practice and networking purposes. Often, advanced practice nurses belong to professional associations that align with their areas of specialization. Therefore, this paper explores a professional association that I may belong to in the future as a specialist in geriatrics nursing.

Organizational Description

I am interested in the Gerontological Advanced Practice Nurses Association (GAPNA). GAPNA is a professional organization formed to represent advanced practice nurses, researchers, clinicians, and educators’ interests. It advocates the interests of healthcare providers involved in advancing and practice of caring for the elderly. GAPNA provides healthcare providers in elderly care and practice, opportunities for research, leadership, education, networking, advocacy, and advancement of evidence-based care. The mission of the association is to promote excellence in advanced practice nursing for the health and wellbeing of the elderly. Its vision is to continue being trusted leaders for the expert care for the elderly. The goals of the association include advocating quality care for the elderly, promoting professional development, offering continuing gerontological education, and educating the population about issues related to aging. GAPNA members enjoy several benefits from the association (gapna.org, n.d.-a). They include the ability to network with other professionals, continuing education, information about evidence-based practice, and enhanced involvement activities that advance the care of the elderly.

The Four Main Messages

The Institute of Medicine (IOM) report from 2010 was heavily focused on the future of nursing. It concentrated on four issues that served as the report’s main messages. To begin, the report advocates for nurses to be able to practice to the full extent of their education and training. Individual nurses’ potential for improved health outcomes will be fully realized as a result of this. Second, the report calls for improved nursing education and training. It believes that the system should encourage nurses to achieve higher levels of education and training in order to contribute maximally and adequately to the field. The third message is to allow for full collaboration among nurses, physicians, and other professionals. The system will be redesigned so that nurses can lead, collaborate, and improve efforts for better health outcomes. The fourth message highlights the significance of improved data collection and information infrastructure. This is intended to facilitate effective policymaking and workforce planning because reliable information informs decision-making (Institute of Medicine, 2010)

3. Explain why it is important that a nurse’s role and education evolve to meet the needs of an aging and increasingly diverse population.
4. Discuss the significance of professional development, or lifelong learning, and its relevance in caring for diverse populations across the life span and within the healthillness continuum.
5. Discuss how nurses can assist in effectively managing patient care within an evolving health care system.

Influence of the IOM Report on Nursing Education and Leadership

To address the issue of nurse education, the report takes a novel approach. It contends that the nursing education system should be altered so that current and future nurses can provide patient-centered, high-quality, and safe care in all settings (Shaia & Muasher, 2019). This change will address current system challenges such as nursing schools not having enough clinical placement and nurse faculty to accommodate all qualified nurses, the inapplicability of 20th century teaching techniques to the 21st century, few incentives for nurses to pursue further education, and a lack of cooperation and collaboration among nursing professions (Institute of Medicine, 2010). The report portrays nurses as leaders in terms of leadership. However, the training system does not provide nurses with sufficient leadership skills. Nurses face difficulties in the field as they struggle with patient advocacy issues. As a result, the report recommends that the system allow for full collaboration with physicians and other health professionals in order to ensure adequate participation in the health policy arena.

Topic 4 DQ 2

Sep 12-16, 2022

Outline the concept of professional accountability as it pertains to nursing. Provide examples of how a nurse demonstrates professional accountability in clinical expertise, the nursing process, and evidence-based practice. How do you incorporate self-care that includes mental health and spiritual well-being for you and your clients? What does the Bible say about self-care?

As a nurse we must do certain things to maintain our licensure. Depending on the state we are licensed in there are different requirements for renewing our licenses. If we have certifications we have things we must do to maintain those certifications.

In our nursing practice we will have education that maybe required to do as part of our employment. Hospitals frequently have yearly education that must be done by employees. There may be new education that comes up based on unit needs or new policies and protocols. As a professional nurse we must meet these requirements and do them in a timely manner.

What are some things that you have to do to remain accountable in your practice?

I think continuous education is super important to keep us in the healthcare field up to date and in the loop of latest practices and such. We are in such a ever evolving field that we have to stay up to date to keep our skills relevant. In my practice we have to keep up to date on oncology nursing via continuous education certificates or attending workshops. I usually attend classes or seminars online there are alot of resources on medscape.com which is where i did most of my education for this year. in addition getting new certifications such as ACLS, PALS, etc. are immensely helpful in staying accountable in your practice.

On my unit both the RNs and Cardiovascular Techs (CVTs) require to have both ACLS & BLS certification in order to work in the Cath lab. In addition to this, we are required to do mandatory Radiation safety modules annually, Rhythm Interpretation module and test. If these modules are not completed by the end of the fiscal year, violators will be removed from the schedule until completed and if these modules are not completed with a set time from by your supervisor/Manager you may loose your job. In the District of Columbia, the DC board of nursing requires that within two years of the RNS practice in DC all RNs must complete 24 credit hour continue education and this must include HIV and LGBTQ lessons. So in order to continue practicing in DC & renewing your license, nurses may have to fulfill this requirement.

As a new international nurse, i had to do a lot of transitions, which included, license endorsement. The parts that interested me most were the continuous education posted on our portals, for continuity of growth and competency. We need to continue with these studies as per specialty to renew our licenses as pertains to the nursing board. We need to also follow the ethical part of nursing, practice according to the scope of practice and follow institutions policy to be able accountable in all we do to continue practicing.

The American Nurse Association (ANA) code of ethics defines nurse accountability as stated, “to be answerable to oneself and others for one’s own action” This means that nurses are required to follow an ethical conduct code based on the principles of fidelity and respect for the dignity, Nurses can display their professional accountability by taking responsibility for their own judgment and clinical decision they may make (Arkansas 20117). One way a nurse can show professional accountability is early recognition of an ischemic stroke patient, facial drooping, slurred speech, confusion, paralysis, and so forth. That nurse has a responsibility to that patient by acknowledging and alerting the proper clinicians to the situation based on his or her judgment. Because ischemic strokes are time-sensitive, early recognition and treatment can minimize brain damage and improve outcomes (Harvard 2017) It is important for nurses to practice good self-care and prioritize their own mental health and well-being which could directly improve the quality of care that they give their patients. Nurses can incorporate mental self-care just by coming up with a realistic individualized plan that they could do daily and/or every couple of days (Haughey 2022). The bible doesn’t speak directly about self-care but do provide some direction on how to establish, and maintain it. Jesus spoke about and gave direction and instruction to his disciples to care for their physical and mental health Jesus recognized that we cannot function and live sufficiently without rest (Liu 2022).

Professional accountability for nurses is very important. Nurses are expected to be accountable for their actions, practice, and safety of those they care for. In 2016, for the 15th year in a row, nursing was voted the most trusted profession, and it’s paramount that they maintain that same level of trust in all that they do. Nurses are expected to behave a certain way, conduct themselves with some level of respect and professionalism in the workplace. The American Nursing Association’s Code of Ethics defines professional accountability as being “answerable to oneself and others for one’s own actions.” Not only do we hold high clinical practice and ethical standards for ourselves, but we must also be willing to accept professional responsibility when or if deviations from care standards occur. A nurse is responsible and accountable for the patients assigned to her during her shift.  A culture of accountability in healthcare helps improve doctor-patient relationship, helps hospitals provide better care and prevent misuse of hospital resources. Accountability ensures nurses always put patient’s interest first and always to justify their actions, also it ensures patient’s rights, confidentiality and safety are protected.

It’s important to always ensure we as nurses are in the best optimal state of mind in other to give the best care that we can give. When a person is stressed or suffering from anxiety or other problems and isn’t taking care of themselves, it spills into their work, and they sometimes make mistakes. When Jesus was teaching the disciples and the multitudes, he would sometimes take some time away to rest or spend time alone with the Father. Therefore, it’s important that we take care of ourselves, so we are able to take care of our patients.
