In Critical Care, I try to reframe the more difficult shifts into “challenging opportunities.” I enjoy working in Case Management because the only thing left to do in a crisis is the Next Right Thing. That being said, we all have those never-ending and draining days. Recently, I was faced with multiple Homeless people needing placement at the same time. If any degree of forethought or planning had taken place by these people, then I would have been able to easily place them through the local House of Mercy and assisted with everyone getting into a hotel before 5 pm.
However, due to the fact that the Homeless population does not plan, but only “feels” and reacts in the moment, all of these patients came into the hospital when it got colder, and after 6 pm. Very few resources are available at night. I called the Housing Crisis Hotline for each of the patients, and there was no call back. This is when we start to get very creative with our problem-solving, because we cannot tie up a bed in the ED for too long.
I spoke to each of the patients about the place they stayed the night before. Then we spoke about anyone in the area that they knew or could ask to stay with that night. In each of the situations, we were able to problem-solve and brainstorm a reasonable alternative to sleeping outside. Everyone ended up going home, after being offered a bag lunch.

What I did to make things easier was went and introduced myself and told her I had never worked with her. I also asked her was there anything special or extra that she would like for the procedure. Just me doing that made her feel relaxed and at ease and it made my life so much easier. I feel that if surgeons know ahead of time about a change they are okay.

According to Dayer-Berenson (2014), other qualities include active listening, avoiding making assumptions, educating the patient about all medical services they receive at the hospital, and incorporating culture-specific attitudes and values with health promotion tools.
