A learning style is a technique or the preferred way in which learners absorb, process, comprehend, and retain knowledge. There are various learning styles which are categorized based on the sensible approaches, which are either visual, auditory, read or write, and kinesthetic. The learning styles are found within the VARK model of students learning. VARK is an acronym for the four primary learning styles Visual, Auditory, Read and Write and Kinesthetic (VARK, 2019). The VARK model recognizes that learners have various approaches on how they process information, typically known as the preferred leaning mode. This essay will discuss learning styles for learners and will include a description of my learning style based on the VARK questionnaire. The paper will also explore the importance of educators identifying learners’ learning styles and application of learning styles in health promotion.

Personal Learning Style According to the VARK Questionnaire

My learning style as per the VARK questionnaire is Very Strong Kinesthetic. The VARK questionnaire results were Visual-2, Aural-2, Read/Write- 2, and Kinesthetic-12. The Kinesthetic learning style is defined as one where a learner understands effectively by using experiences and real things even though they are exhibited as images or on screens (VARK, 2019). In the Kinesthetic learning style, I prefer to encounter several experiences to promote understanding of concepts. Furthermore, ideas become valuable if they seem practical, real, and relevant to me, and I need to do something to understand it.

Preferred Learning Strategies

The Kinesthetic learning style preference uses experiences and real things when they are presented in images and on screens. The preferred learning strategies in the Kinesthetic learning style include the use of autobiographies and documentaries, applications before learning theories, and the use of demonstrations and applying what one has learned (VARK, 2019). Individuals with kinesthetic preference prefer discussing real things in their life, prefer having their own experiences, doing thing things with others and making things happen through actions (VARK, 2019). In addition, they prefer tackling practical problems and using problem-solving techniques, they complete tasks and prefer outcomes that can be measured (VARK, 2019). Besides, they prefer being part of the team, being appreciated for their experiences and prefer interacting with individuals who apply their ideas as well as individuals who are relevant, concrete, and down-to-earth.

For instance, I prefer learning to solve problems using real-life case scenarios and practical experiences since I understand things better and also retain the learned information for a more extended period. I understand concepts better when I learn them practically, such as through projects and lab practical. I prefer having a trainer who explains concepts using real-life scenarios, uses demonstrations to explain a theory, and allows me to apply theory in a real-life setting. When studying, I use case studies whereby I attempt solving the case scenarios to gauge my understanding of a concept. By using case studies and theory application, I can relate the information learned and find the information valuable and relevant.

Understanding the learning needs and styles of learners is important for the realization of optimum outcomes in the learning process. Nurse educators often utilize tools such as the VARK Questionnaire to understand the different learning styles of their learners and the appropriate mix of the needed learning styles. Diverse learning styles should be incorporated into the learning process to address the unique needs of the learners. In addition, the understanding facilitates the realization of optimum outcomes in health promotion initiatives. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to analyze my VARK Questionnaire results and how I will incorporate them into my practice.

Summary of the Learning Style

The VARK Questionnaire results showed me as a multimodal learner. I utilize multimodal learning styles where I combine different methods of communication and doing things. The results showed that I use kinesthetic most of the time followed by visual, reading/writing, and aural. The assessment results imply that I largely utilize my senses to achieve my desired learning outcomes. I also employ visual learning tools such as graphs, maps, and diagrams to achieve optimum learning outcomes. There is also the aspect of participative learning through methods that include discussion, listening, and taking notes that inform my learning (Huang, 2019). Therefore, being a multimodal learner, I tend to utilize optimally all the different learning styles utilized in nursing education.

Preferred Learning Strategies

I prefer utilizing a range of learning strategies as a student nurse. One of them is group discussions and lectures. Lectures enable me to gain abstract knowledge related to different nursing concepts. I utilize group discussions to broaden my understanding and application of these concepts. I also prefer learning by watching demonstrations. This approach entails the use of tools that include videos, graphs, diagrams, and charts. Demonstrations increase my retention of knowledge and the development of new skills. I also prefer writing to enhance my understanding and act as a source of future reference (Cimermanová, 2018). My preferred learning strategies relate to those of the VARK Questionnaire results, as it shows that I utilize multiple learning strategies to achieve optimum learning outcomes.

Effect of Individual Learning Style on Understanding or Educational Performance

Learners have diverse learning styles that affect the degree to which a learner can understand or perform educational activities. They utilize different learning styles, including aural, visual, reading/writing, and kinesthetic, which should be incorporated into the learning process. Nurse educators should strive to incorporate multimodal learning styles to address the learners’ diverse needs. They should also assist their students to learn how to incorporate their learning styles to different situations in their education and practice. Nursing students that have developed competencies in integrating their preferred learning styles into educational and practice activities have a high level of education and practice performance. They also demonstrate enhanced abilities in responding to complex, emerging needs in their education and practice, hence, their high performance (Vizeshfar&Torabizadeh, 2018). Consequently, nurse educators need to investigate and understand how different learning styles can be used in teaching to achieve their students’ learning needs.

Learning Styles in Health Promotion

Health promotion entails the adoption of interventions that minimize the risks and progression of a health problem in a population. Understanding the learning styles of the participants in health promotion contributes to the realization of the desired outcome. The understanding ensures that nurses adopt effective lifestyle and behavioral interventions that suit the needs and preferences of the target populations. It also ensures the alignment of health promotion strategies with the existing knowledge, skills, and expectations of the targeted populations. Learning styles can also affect behavioral change in the population. For example, the use of an appropriate learning style underpins the existing knowledge and skills in the population, increasing its ability to achieve the desired behavioral outcomes (Shirazi & Heidari, 2019). There is also the increased likelihood of resource efficiency due to the ease with which the desired behavioral outcomes are achieved in change implementation.

Understanding the learning styles of the participants in health promotion also promotes sustainable change. Accordingly, the participants embrace approaches to behavioral change that can be incorporated easily into their routines. The understanding also contributes to the empowerment of participants targeted by the behavioral change. The empowerment arises due to the enhanced relevance of the change initiatives, which can lead to project ownership (Huang, 2019). Therefore, education specialists should be involved in teaching the target population how to use the different approaches to learning to enhance the outcomes of health promotion initiatives.

NRS 429 Topic 1 VARK Analysis Paper Assignment Conclusion

Overall, understanding the different learning styles of learners is important for the realization of optimum outcomes in nursing education. Nurse educators should incorporate learning approaches that address the unique learning needs of nursing students. Tools such as the VARK Questionnaire can be used to understand nursing students’ different learning styles. The knowledge on learning styles can also be incorporated into health promotion activities to ensure relevance, sustainability, and empowerment of change adopters.

Title: NRS 429 Topic 1 VARK Analysis Paper Assignment

A learning style is a technique through which learners collect, search through, interpret, organize, make conclusions, and preserve knowledge. Learning styles are grouped as per sensory approaches; namely, visual, aural, read or write, and kinesthetic (Whitney, 2018). Visual learning style is whereby learners understand by use of visual tools while in aural, they understand well when they listen to instructions. The read or write learners learn best through reading or writing while in the kinesthetic group, learners gain knowledge and understanding when they are allowed to touch and feel (Whitney, 2018). The purpose of this paper will be to explore learning styles and strategies for learners. I will include a summary of my learning style as per the VARK questionnaire and the importance of identifying learning styles for educators and in health promotion.

Personal Learning Style

My learning style preference, according to the VARK questionnaire, is Strong Kinesthetic (VARK 2019). Kinesthetic preference is described as one that a learner uses experiences and real things even when they are displayed as images and on screens. My VARK results were as follows: visual-0, Aural 4, Read or Write- 3, and Kinesthetic 9 (VARK 2019). As per my learning style, I prefer to have more experiences to enhance understanding of concepts.

Preferred Learning Strategy

My preferred learning strategy is using practical experiences and real-life case studies to solve problems. By using a practical approach, I understand the concept better and also retain it for an extended period. Besides, I consider ideas to be valuable if they sound real, practical and relevant to me.  I also need to do things practically to understand. Furthermore, I prefer a feedback that involves a face-to-face discussion whereby I am shown examples of projects that demonstrate success or failure. Moreover, I prefer trainers who use examples of real-life occurrences when explaining a point since I remember the examples and relate them with the concept learned. When assessing my understanding, I look at case studies and try to solve them with the gained knowledge to determine if the theory is valuable to real-life situations.

My learning style is in line with the identified learning strategies identified for individuals with a kinesthetic strategy. According to the VARK results, people with my learning style preference like to be trained or learn through practical exercises, examples, experiences, case studies, trial and error, and using things that are real (VARK 2019). They prefer learning from autobiographies and documentaries and applications before studying theories. Besides, they prefer to have demonstrations done before applying what they have learned and like having conversations about the real things in their lives (VARK 2019). Their own experiences are more valuable than the experiences of others, and they prefer undertaking activities with others through actions and making things happen (VARK 2019). Furthermore, they enjoy working on practical problems where they gain problem-solving techniques.

Importance of Identifying Learning Styles for Learners as an Educator

An individual’s learning style determines the degree to which one acquires knowledge and skills since individuals understand better either by visualizing, hearing, reading, or being hands on (Whitney, 2018). Further, individuals learn better when the teaching style used suits their learning style hence making them memorize what they learned during the educational activity. When educators promote a learning environment that addresses the learning styles of learners, the latter can study better and feel more comfortable in their unique styles rather than having to adapt to the changing teaching styles used by the former (Bastable, 2017). Educators need to identify the learning styles and preferences of learners since it helps not only the educator but also the learner in being more effective in the learning process.

By understanding a learner’s learning style; an educator can determine the type of teaching method, resources and teaching methods to use. For instance, auditory learners will best learn through discussions, tape recordings, seminars, and discussions, and they will probably enquire on what they have not understood (Bastable, 2017). Besides, tests for auditory learners will be best conducted using oral examinations. Moreover, by making learners aware of their learning style, educators can empower them to identify the necessity of each learning style for various disciplines.

Learning Styles and Health Promotion

Health providers need to identify the learning styles of individuals when conducting health promotion to ensure that they will learn, understand and practice the health messages provided to promote better health outcomes. Individuals tend to be interested in health education messages when their learning style is considered during health promotion (Kangovi & Asch, 2018). Learning styles affect behavior change as individuals modify their behaviors based on what they saw, heard or practiced in the health promotion programs.  An individual’s learning style determines the possibility of modification of behavior as the patient understand and master information faster and easier when their learning preferences are utilized (Kangovi & Asch, 2018). The different learning styles can be accommodated in health promotion by targeting all the senses when providing health education (Sharma, 2016). For instance, when educating individuals on the prevention of diseases, lectures and seminars can be held which target auditory learners and images and videos can enhance the sessions to target visual and kinesthetic learners. In addition, health education pamphlets can be administered for individuals to read further, which targets read and write learners (Sharma, 2016). During health promotion sessions, case studies can be presented for the learners to discuss and come up with solutions which can suit kinesthetic and auditory learners.

NRS 429 Topic 1 VARK Analysis Paper Assignment Conclusion

In summary, learning styles, according to VARK, include visual, aural, read or write, and kinesthetic. Learners learn best when the teaching style is tailored to suit their learning style. It is, therefore, essential for educators to identify their learners learning style to promote a comfortable learning environment and enhance their understanding. It is also essential for health educators to understand the learning styles of individuals, including their patients during health promotion programs. Modification of behavior is enhanced by the utilization of appropriate teaching styles that suit learner’s preferences. Besides, different learning styles can be incorporated during health promotion programs to meet the preferences of all learners.

Title: NRS 429 Topic 1 VARK Analysis Paper Assignment

A learning style refers to how a learner best absorbs, processes, uses, and retains information. Learners process information differently and thus learn optimally. Learning styles comprise concrete experience, reflective observation, theoretical conceptualization, and active experimentation. The five learning styles that have been identified are Visual, Auditory, Read/Write, and Kinesthetic, resulting in the acronym VARK (İlçin et al., 2018). It is crucial for educators to identify a learner’s learning style to utilize teaching methods that maximize learning. Besides, learners can identify their learning styles to determine what study methods, learning environment, and activities enable them to learn best. The purpose of this paper is to identify those learning styles and its attendant elements via the analysis of the VARK questionnaire.

Personal Learning Styles According to VARK Questionnaire

As per the VARK questionnaire, my learning style is a very strong visual. My scores were: Visual-16, Aural-1, Read/Write- 8, and Kinesthetic- 5. Individuals with a very strong visual learning style prefer to learn from different formats, diagrams, graphs, maps, interesting layouts, and spaces. Individuals with this learning style use symbolism and various formats, fonts, and colors to highlight important points (VARK Learn Limited, 2019). However, the learning style does not include video and pictures that depict real images, and it is not visual simply because it is displayed on a screen.

Preferred Learning Strategies

A learning strategy refers to a person’s approach to organizing and applying a certain set of skills to learn information or complete other tasks more effectively and efficiently in academic and non-academic settings. My learning strategies include drawing symbols and pictures. I use symbols like exclamation points for vital information, question marks for confusing content or one needing further reading, and stars for content that I fully understand. Besides, I prefer illustrating complex concepts and processes. In addition, I use flashcards to help me remember key terms and crucial information. I also create charts and graphs, especially when reading information that can be organized as a graph or chart, since seeing information in a structured format helps in remembering. Furthermore, I create outlines to structure large amounts of information that I need to study using headings, subheadings, and bullet points, which helps prepare for tests and exams.

My preferred learning strategies compare to the identified strategies for the Visual learning style. They both involve drawing things, studying with plans, maps, and diagrams, and using written information that has graphs, charts, and diagrams. Like my strategy, the Visual style prefers a page to have a different layout, striking or unusual, which is often more essential than the content (VARK Learn Limited, 2019). Furthermore, both learning strategies prefer turning tables of figures into graphs, reading words and converting them into own-designed diagrams, and utilizing symbols.

Learning Styles Effect on Educational Performance and Importance of Identifying Learning Styles for Learners as an Educator

A learner’s learning style has a significant direct impact on their academic performance. The impact of the learning style on a learner’s personality is also significant. According to Cletus and Eneluwe (2020), what affects a student’s learning style and improves academic performance is no longer dependent on chalk, talk, and other learning material but on how the individual learns in the learning process. Each learner has a different cognitive ability and preferences in receiving and processing information. This is because some learners appreciate learning through visual (reading), some prefer learning through the verbal form (physical lectures), while others choose to learn by engaging or practicing what they have been taught (Cletus & Eneluwe, 2020). Therefore, a student will better process information if the teaching methods align with their learning style. As a result, when the teaching strategies match a student’s learning style, they process and retain information more effectively, positively impacting their academic performance.

It is crucial for an educator to understand students’ learning styles and preferences to help them learn effectively. By understanding the learning styles of each learner, it becomes easier for the educator to incorporate teaching styles using various techniques and approaches (Aboe, 2018). Besides, mastering strategies and methods for teaching influences learners’ ability to absorb, process, and retain the content and subject matter. In general, it is essential for the educator to apply combined teaching methods and strategies so that students with different learning styles can learn and retain the taught material effectively (Aboe, 2018). Furthermore, it is essential for the educator to utilize various teaching and to facilitate methods that stimulate and promote interactivity for learners.

Learning Styles and Health Promotion

Nurses occupy a critical role in patient education. To facilitate and support patients and

family decision-making, and to improve health outcomes, nurses are expected to

possess expert instructional skills.

Nurses play a critical role in health promotion. They are expected to have exceptional instructional skills to facilitate and support behavior change in individual patients and the community. Improving the effectiveness of health promotion efforts is a major goal for health care providers as it enables them to achieve the desired outcome. Identifying the learning style of patients and individuals in the community and then tailoring the teaching strategies to meet the individual styles increases motivation, improves retention, and makes the health promotion sessions more effective (Mangold et al., 2018). Furthermore, evaluating individuals’ learning styles and the context in which learning on behavioral change occurs, allows for a personalized approach that integrates teaching modalities that maximize patient learning.

Adults engage in health promotion programs to improve knowledge and change skills, behavior, and attitude. It is essential that the healthcare consumer is aware of the importance of health information since adults are motivated by their need to understand information (Mangold et al., 2018). Therefore, the nurse must be flexible in the teaching methods and vigilant in assessment to determine congruence between patients’ learning styles and learning outcomes from health promotion.

NRS 429 Topic 1 VARK Analysis Paper Assignment Conclusion

Learning styles include visual, auditory, read/write, and kinesthetic. A learning style is a strong cognitive tool that can impact learners’ academic performance if effectively adopted and well-managed. Educators should consider students’ learning styles and tailor teaching methods and strategies with this in mind to promote maximum learning. Nurses should also identify patients’ and individuals’ learning styles during health promotion to enable them to process the health information and modify their lifestyle practices.

Title: NRS 429 Topic 1 VARK Analysis Paper Assignment

As nurses in whatever branch or aspect of nursing that we find ourselves teaching our patients is one of the greatest roles that we play. As nurse educators, we teach our patients about disease process, we teach about medication management, we teach about the side effects of medication, we teach health promotional programs, and many other health related issues. For teaching to be effective, the nurses need to find out how ready the patients are, their ability, and their readiness to learn (Falkner, 2018). One strategy that nurses should consider when educating their patients is by assessing the educational level of their patients so that they can speak to the patients in the language or at the level of the patients’ understanding. Another strategy that nurses can use is by assessing the patients’ perception of the health problem that the plan of care is being developed. Jia et al., (2020) noted that clinicians should be very sensitive to clients’ perception and should take a personalized approach in the assessment process while developing care plans for them.

Behavioral objectives can be utilized at the first step of developing the care plan which is, at the assessment stage. Nurses should be able to assess and set objectives with the involvement of the patients at the onset of the plan. These behavioral objectives can also be utilized at the midpoint of the care plan and towards the end of the educational or teaching process. For individuals and their families to live their best life, Falkner (2018) posited that nurses should consider strategies as the key to developing individual care plans.

What strategies, besides the use of learning styles, can a nurse educator consider when developing tailored individual care plans, or for educational programs in health promotion?

When should behavioral objectives be utilized in a care plan or health promotion?

The nurse’s role and responsibility as health educator is vital to a patient’s optimal healthcare outcomes, success during hospitalization and following discharge. Bedside nurses spend the most amount of time with clients versus any other healthcare discipline, putting the profession in a crucial position to witness, detect, advocate, and educate (Marshall et al, 2020). The nurse is key in coordinating care between other interdisciplinary teams, creating individualized care plans and allowing for inclusion of the client’s family members or support systems during the education process resulting in optimal client care outcomes. (Faulkner et al, 2022)

Successful patient teaching starts with the health care providers knowledge of the education process, specific learning styles and potential obstacles the client may face when receiving new information (Falkner et al., 2022). There are several strategies the nurse can utilize to evaluate the client’s ability to grasp new ideas, besides identifying the four learning styles, the nurse can use the teach back method, application through demonstration, and assessing health outcomes. The nurse must also explore and examine the client’s specific cultural background, environment, language, level of education, and life experience in order to create tailored care plans. Implementing Behavioral objectives should also be considered in health promotion to improve a client’s lifestyle practices and encourage reduction of behaviors that lead to illness or worsening of chronic diseases. Nursing, along with other health care professionals, can impact rising health care costs, and decrease health care system dependence by promoting positive behavior change in patients (Falkner et al., 2022).

Patient education should aim to be relevant and the clinical information should meet at the level of the client with the goal of increasing the understanding of illness conditions and health-promoting behaviors. More so, education and health promotion can improve patient safety, satisfaction, lead to positive lifestyle changes and quality of life.
