Comparing Humanistic-Existential Psychotherapy with Other Approaches

Psychotherapy is a commonly used treatment approach in the management of various psychiatric conditions as an adjuvant to other treatment modalities. There are multiple psychotherapy approaches that psychiatrists and therapists use for treatment purposes. The purpose of this paper is to compare humanistic-existential psychotherapy with cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT).

Humanistic-Existential Psychotherapy and CBT

Humanistic-experiential therapy (H-E) is an approach that focuses on a person’s nature rather than the collection of behaviors. The approach utilizes a holistic approach that emphasizes the whole person, their positive behaviors, and their ability to grow, heal, and find self-actualization through self-exploration (Chaimowitz et al., 2021). In addition, H-E utilizes the patient-centered approach to allow the patients to be the experts on their own experience and emphasizes the importance of empathy, positive regard, and congruence in the therapeutic relationship between the therapist and the patient. Furthermore, the therapist’s role is mainly to create a safe and supportive environment that facilitates personal growth and self-actualization (Boardman et al., 2020). Additionally, H-E utilizes the Gestalt approach that helps people to center on their current feelings and experiences rather than their perception of the cause of the feelings. The therapist helpsthe patient explore feelings and experiences through creative and experiential techniques, such as guided re-enactments, to arouse emotions in different situations (Roubal et al., 2023). As a result, the patient becomes aware of and understands those emotions as they happen. CBT is another psychotherapy approach, that helps individuals to learn and focus on present thoughts and beliefs. CBT helps individuals to identify negative thoughts that may have contributed to maladaptive behaviors (Nakao et al., 2021). As a result, it provides self-discovery and insight that is crucial for patients to learn and practice new skills that help avoid or deal with social situations that could potentially trigger a relapse of previous maladaptive behavior. In addition, therapists help individuals build and strengthen their short and long-term goals. CBT also helps individuals learn to identify and solve problems that may arise from life stressors (Fordham et al., 2021). Lastly, CBT utilizes a self-monitoring tool that allows clients to track their behaviors and experiences over time and reevaluate the impact they have had on them.
