Week 7 Discussion
Post TANIC Self-Assessment and Reflection Post
In my future role as an Advanced Practice Nurse, I think competencies in data management and information technology will be extremely beneficial. Being able to effectively manage and analyze data will allow me to better understand patient populations and identify areas where improvements can be made in terms of care delivery (Kleib et al., 2021). Additionally, having a strong understanding of information technology will enable me to leverage technology in order to improve the quality and efficiency of patient care.
Part II
To become an APN nurse, students must first complete a registered nursing program and obtain a valid RN license. In addition, they must complete a master’s degree program in nursing informatics or a related field. During their studies, nurses can expect to gain competencies in EHR systems, health information exchange, patient safety and quality improvement, data analytics and more. By completing this type of coursework, students will be prepared to sit for the certification exam offered by the American Nurses Credentialing Center.
In order to develop the informatics competencies needed to become an APN nurse, I achieved the following competencies in this course: -The ability to collect, organize, and analyze data from a variety of sources in a timely manner (Egbert et al., 2019). -The ability to use technology to communicate nursing care and collaborate with other health professionals. -The ability to use technology to manage information and support decision-making. -The ability to use technology for research purposes, and the -knowledge of how health information is managed and used in the United States healthcare system.
It is projected that by 2025, almost 75 percent of the nursing workforce will be composed of Advanced Practice Nurses (APNs). In light of this projection, it is imperative that future APNs possess a firm grasp of nursing informatics. Nursing informatics is defined as “the scientific discipline that deals with the integration of data, information and knowledge in order to facilitate the improvements in patient care, nursing administration and?” (ANA, 2010). Put simply, nursing informatics allows for the efficient and effective sharing of patient-related data between nurses and other health care professionals.

- Regarding the Post-TANIC Self-Assessment for this week, how does your competency level compare to the Week 2 Self-Assessment?
My competency level has definitely gone up after this course! I went from a low novice level of knowledge to a competent/proficient level of knowledge. I noticed overall that when I was taking the survey, I felt more familiar with what the survey was asking, and now had an underlying foundation of knowledge on the subjects they were asking me. Whereas, compared to beforehand I did not really have that knowledge base when it came to certain subjects and I might have had a faint understanding of what they were asking me, but not enough to discuss it. I realized now that I am more of an expert now when it comes to computer literacy than I had previously thought after this second survey and this class. When it comes to information literacy my competency levels went up from novice to competent in most areas and proficient with some subjects. Overall, I noticed a level up on all questions throughout this second survey and feel more knowledgeable than I did previously.
- Which two competencies do you think may benefit you in your future role as an APN and why?
I believe that all the competencies will benefit me as a future APN, but the ones I will focus on here are information literacy and computer literacy. The way of the future is technology, and the nursing profession is heading more and more towards being technologically advanced and incorporating the newest technologies into its systems. As an APN we need to be well-versed in technology and specifically computer literacy as all patient care is dealt with using a computer system and if one does not know how to use the systems this will be a hindrance and could potentially affect patient care. Information literacy is vital to our roles at APNs as we need to be able to know when information is lacking, we need to know how to attain that information, and then we need to know how to utilize and apply that newfound knowledge to clinical situations. If we are unable to do this as APNs this will not benefit patient care and will ultimately affect their outcomes, as clinical practice will not be up to the current level of standards of care. Healthcare is constantly evolving, growing, and changing and as APNs it is our jobs to keep up with the ever-changing face of healthcare and staying current.
- As discussed in the lesson this week, healthcare providers must be competent in informatics in order to make ethical decisions about informatics technologies and patients’ intimate healthcare data and information. To the extent that information technology is reshaping healthcare practices or promises to improve patient care, healthcare professionals must possess certain competencies which will assist with consistency and quality. Which two competencies did you achieve in this course? Explain.
I would have to say that I have become proficient and expert level in computer literacy and information literacy. My knowledge as stated above has gone up to an expert level of competency in regard to computer literacy. I feel much more confident in my skillset with using computer technology than I had previously thought. I just need to be patient with myself when it comes to new technologies, and give myself time to become acquainted with it. When it comes to information literacy, I feel more competent than I did previously before this class. I can see that as these graduate level courses continue to progress forward, I am attaining more of a competent to a proficient skillset with learning how to attain the knowledge that I need, knowing when to apply it, realizing where it needs to be applied, and knowing how to use it in clinical practice.
Farzandipour et al. (2021) states that, “Future nurses cannot be well-prepared to confront challenges in the various professional fields without the acquisition of technical skills. Therefore, nurses should be able to use data, information, knowledge, and technologies properly to improve nursing care. In this regard, nursing informatics can play a significant role in the areas of education, healthcare provision, research, and management and be used for preservation and storage of clinical care and the extension of research studies that are directly related to the quality of patient healthcare.” This statement is imperative to our future roles as APNs. Without having the necessary skills, knowledge, and proper preparation in NI competencies, the safety of patient care is truly in question. We would be unable to make these ethical decisions about informatics technologies without having the proper training and attainment of these types of skillsets to use in clinical practice. I am grateful that I am took this course at a graduate level preparation, and now feel more competent in NI going forward and will continue to improve my knowledge/skillsets as I move forward in my nursing career.

Title: NR599 Nursing Informatics for Advanced Practice Week 7 Discussion Post TANIC Self-Assessment and Reflection Post
In reflection on week two compared to week seven I believe I have benefited greatly in my confidence and ability to use technology. In health informatics, technology offers providers 24/7 immediate access to patient records. While providing the most current information through electronic access to the individual patient record no matter where they are. Nursing informatics through the growth of analytics is essential. As an APN, I must be a part of the future of nursing informatics. Analytics enhances healthcare practice through the systematic analysis of available statistics and data. According to Kaminski (2022), Data and information “…fuels linkages and relationships that can better serve inclusive, unique person-centered care.” (Kaminski, 2022).
Which two competencies do you think may benefit you in your future role as an APN and why?
As in week two, Technology and Information Literacy Competencies will continue to serve me as an APN. By providing me the ability to access educational information related to a patient’s individual needs. Supporting me in integrating current technologies and access to EBP to ensure I have the current literature and insight into personalized healthcare and positive patient outcomes. The second competency I believe will help me significantly is the Practice Inquiry Competencies, an area of nursing that I did not give much thought to prior to this course. I have realized its value to the provider and its ability to provide gold standard treatment and patient satisfaction. I have attained a new perspective on identifying and translating academic studies and research and how they do or do not relate to one’s clinical setting. To be able to critically analyze data and the outcomes by integrating one’s knowledge through the application is a skill set of clinical investigative skills that all ANPs need to develop and utilize to benefit the patient and themselves. Technology has provided healthcare with multiple benefits primarily patient safety, safer prescribing, well-organized care coordination, streamlined records, and Cost efficiency.
Which two competencies did you achieve in this course? Explain.
This term, I would say that I achieved a better understanding of all the competencies. The two competencies I feel resonated the most would be Policy Competencies and Quality Competencies. The perception of Policy competencies is something nurses acquire through personal experience and knowledge. Giving the APN the ability to perform professional judgment integrated with their skills, clinical judgment, and values as they relate to each specific scenario. APNs practice direct clinical practice within a specific field while establishing relationships and integrating care with patients and families. Embracing their advocacy as it relates to policies that are not only ethical but promote access and equity.
Quality Competencies embrace the QSEN principles, quality competencies that provide the knowledge and skills to utilize the collected data to identify outcomes of our care processes. Boswell, Sanchez, and Powers believe that “Skills and knowledge are foundational to the implementation of EBP.’ (2021). QSEN teaches us the differences in charts and how they demonstrate variations and the variations of indicators. Root cause analysis, understanding the performance of our quality measurements. We must understand the variations as they directly affect our quality of care and identify gaps in current and best practices. All of which assist in ensuring practice measures are effective.

Kaminski. (2022). ReImagine Health: Creating space for Nursing Informatics in the Vision. Online Journal of Nursing Informatics, 26(1).
I definitely feel that my strong points are still in basic word processing and computer skills, however I feel that I understand more of the language used in the TANIC assessment and can explain things related to security, protecting PHI and systems better than when we started. My levels of proficiency have increased in the second assessment and overall have gained knowledge in the healthcare informatics sector.
