Registered Nurses today make up the single largest segment of the healthcare workforce at more than 3 million in number, therefore nurses have valuable insights and the ability to contribute as partners with other healthcare professionals to improve the overall quality and safety of care to patients (IOM, 2011).  Although nurses have a long history of being subservient to the doctors or healthcare systems under which they work, advanced practice nurses have a chance to break this glass ceiling and become significantly more autonomous in their scope of practice and their ability to rely on their own knowledge to make decisions about patient health. Furthering degrees help to ensure nurses are well prepared to fully engage with other healthcare professionals and assume leadership roles.

The 21st-century nurse that I selected is Miss Eva who is an Assistant Professor at a local University and is a Ph.D. prepared Family Nurse Practitioner currently practicing in the Emergency department and family medicine department.  She has already made nursing history in all that she has accomplished in the past 12 years.  She has published articles with some more in the works along with many presentations under her belt. Miss Eva is one of the Chair Board Member at her job and heads the department which brings about awareness of patient safety issues through symposiums and public charity events.  She has also developed classroom simulations for NP students to practice managing the side effects of medications.  I have by far learned so much from my Miss Eva and am in awe of her desire to learn and teach others, she makes me want to teach others the way she does. Miss Eva started her nursing career in 2008, She said she worked with many nurses who helped her navigate her way in those early stages of her professional career one of them they still work together till today and is also her mentor in the field.  As for me, am not sure I have made history even tho has been a nurse for 10years, 5 years in Nigeria, and barely 3years in the USA. I feel am still new in the system and I still need to learn more even tho I precept new nurses to the medical/surgical unit at my current place of employment.  I feel I have made an impact on those nurses I have precepted and continue to precept to this day. Through encouragement and constant support, I feel confidence is needed to build their clinical and communication skills to become a member of the interdisciplinary team to provide the overall safety of our patients.  I try to instill in my orientees that we are our patient’s advocate and we do what is best for them.

As nurses, we are clinicians, educators, teachers, and advocates who have endured many challenges throughout the centuries and we are still enduring due to the pandemic going on, but the rewards are well worth the demands that this profession has bestowed upon us.  I am proud to be a nurse and even more proud that I am here today finally getting the education needed to obtain my bachelor’s degree. Especially at this trying time, I am glad am a frontline helping people at this time, the joy I get from treating a patient watching them from worse to better and they get discharged is what I cannot trade for anything. I love my job and am glad am on the war front at this time, saving lives and impacting nursing in the little way I can.  We are superheroes and will continue to be heroes.

NR393 Nursing History

Roma and Class,

As I read through some of the required readings, there were multiple nurses in history and healthcare events that is impacting nursing. Not only influencing nursing but all of healthcare. Patrica Benner, a nurse theorist had once mentioned something along the lines of a nurse needing to know how to respond in chaos (Judd, 2014, pg.309). Reading about that actually made me laugh a little considering today’s issues and fighting a pandemic. COVID-19 of course is an obvious event that I could spend all day talking about, simply because I face it all day long. When reading through our texts, I am so thankful for updated technology. I am happy that I can chart on a computer at the bedside of a sick patient and give them peace of mind they are not fighting alone. I have used my own personal cell phone to facetime loved ones, call doctors, try to find quick answers. There are great apps even that can be downloaded to your cell phone for quick interpretations of things like ABG’s or med calculations. I am an ER nurse but learning a lot from ICU nurses in our facility now that all three of our ICU’s are full and we made a “makeshift covid ICU” in part of our ER, wow what an experience. A scary experience as well. So technology and charting is something I am thankful for, as well as the opportunity to advance my career through online learning. Chamberlain has been a great flow for me while trying to work, have a family, and go to school. I work with more APRN’s than I do doctors anymore. Personally, I feel that an NP gives exceptional care to patients because they have once been the bedside nurse and know the process a patient goes through to get care.

Stay safe,

Jessica

Covid-19 is an event that has occurred in 21st-century nursing and has had a great impact on the evidence in professional nursing practice. The pandemic has helped to improve the nurses’ use of aseptic procedures. The pandemic has hit the world so hard, and it has led to a lot of research being conducted on how to control the infections. The research has improved aseptic procedures. The nurses are now ensuring that they are using sterilized products and have increased the levels of hygiene both in the work station and in the patient wards. Hygiene has been proposed by research to be effective control of covid-19 infections, and therefore nurses are ensuring that high levels of cleanliness are implemented through ensuring taps with running waters and soaps are placed in patients’ wards and the hospital surroundings.
Nurses have never been so serious about the use of PPEs, but now with the evidence based research proposing how effective use of PPEs helps prevent the spread of the virus, the nurses are more careful about how they use them. Evidence nursing research has helped build the capacity of nurses, and they now have improved nursing skills in handling critical care patients (Martland, 2020). Nurses have also improved their skills on how they handle the patients in the ICU, especially those using ventilators.
My choice of Covid-19 is due to the impact it has on health care. Many people have lost their lives, and it has led to a lot of research on the clinical and nursing field on how to improve the situation (Zhang, 2020). Prevention measures, as well as vaccines, have been developed and are still being developed through evidence research that is vital to healthcare.

One or two sentence responses, simple statements of agreement or “good post,” and responses that are off-topic will not count as substantive. Substantive responses should be at least 150 words.

I encourage you to incorporate the readings from the week (as applicable) into your responses.

Weekly Participation

Your initial responses to the mandatory DQ do not count toward participation and are graded separately.

In addition to the DQ responses, you must post at least one reply to peers (or me) on three separate days, for a total of three replies.

Participation posts do not require a scholarly source/citation (unless you cite someone else’s work).

Part of your weekly participation includes viewing the weekly announcement and attesting to watching it in the comments. These announcements are made to ensure you understand everything that is due during the week.

APA Format and Writing Quality

Familiarize yourself with APA format and practice using it correctly. It is used for most writing assignments for your degree. Visit the Writing Center in the Student Success Center, under the Resources tab in LoudCloud for APA paper templates, citation examples, tips, etc. Points will be deducted for poor use of APA format or absence of APA format (if required).

Cite all sources of information! When in doubt, cite the source. Paraphrasing also requires a citation.

I highly recommend using the APA Publication Manual, 6th edition.

Use of Direct Quotes

I discourage overutilization of direct quotes in DQs and assignments at the Masters’ level and deduct points accordingly.

As Masters’ level students, it is important that you be able to critically analyze and interpret information from journal articles and other resources. Simply restating someone else’s words does not demonstrate an understanding of the content or critical analysis of the content.

It is best to paraphrase content and cite your source.

LopesWrite Policy

For assignments that need to be submitted to LopesWrite, please be sure you have received your report and Similarity Index (SI) percentage BEFORE you do a “final submit” to me.

Once you have received your report, please review it. This report will show you grammatical, punctuation, and spelling errors that can easily be fixed. Take the extra few minutes to review instead of getting counted off for these mistakes.

Review your similarities. Did you forget to cite something? Did you not paraphrase well enough? Is your paper made up of someone else’s thoughts more than your own?

Visit the Writing Center in the Student Success Center, under the Resources tab in LoudCloud for tips on improving your paper and SI score.

Late Policy

The university’s policy on late assignments is 10% penalty PER DAY LATE. This also applies to late DQ replies.

Please communicate with me if you anticipate having to submit an assignment late. I am happy to be flexible, with advance notice. We may be able to work out an extension based on extenuating circumstances.

If you do not communicate with me before submitting an assignment late, the GCU late policy will be in effect.

I do not accept assignments that are two or more weeks late unless we have worked out an extension.

As per policy, no assignments are accepted after the last day of class. Any assignment submitted after midnight on the last day of class will not be accepted for grading.

Communication

Communication is so very important. There are multiple ways to communicate with me:

Questions to Instructor Forum: This is a great place to ask course content or assignment questions. If you have a question, there is a good chance one of your peers does as well. This is a public forum for the class.

Individual Forum: This is a private forum to ask me questions or send me messages. This will be checked at least once every 24 hours.
