Community Cultural Needs

Describe Specific Culture/Ethnic Population Selected

The selected population is Hispanic. This population is the second largest ethnic group in the US. According to Pew Research Center (2020), the Hispanic population is about 60.6 million in 2019, which represents 18% share of national population. Culturally, Hispanics trace their ancestry from Mexico and so, they have Mexican culture. The Hispanic population in US entails major subgroups such as the Dominicans, Colombians, Mexicans, Puerto Ricans, Salvadoran, and Ecuadorians. The population is regarded as the youngest American population and generally has inferior economic, social, and educational status.

Rationale for Selecting this Population

Hispanics are economically disadvantaged and face various challenges such as low income, inadequate access to healthcare, high uninsured rates, and poor housing. Moreover, the health status of this population is determined by various factors such as lack of preventive care, poor health insurance coverage, language barriers, and cultural barriers.

A Cultural/Ethnic Need within the Area, Clinical Practice, or Community

The US is currently diverse, with different levels of income, education, cultural and ethnic values, and language. As such, there is a need of health policy that considers the diverse nature of communities to ensure that all ethnic populations are served.

Chosen Health Issue from Hispanic population Based on LHI Priorities

A risk factor that is widespread among the Hispanics is obesity. Obesity refers to the excessive and abnormal fat in the body which increases chances for chronic conditions such as hypertension and diabetes (Healthy People 2020, 2021).

Details of the Health Issue

How the Health Issue is based on the LHI Priorities from Healthy People

According to Healthy People 2020 (2021), obesity is primary risk factors for serious health conditions and chronic diseases such as osteoarthritis, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, heart disease and stroke, and various types of cancer. It is based on the LHI’s priority of ensuring good nutrition, healthy body weight, and physical activity as critical areas of an individual’s health and wellbeing.

Reasons for Selecting Obesity

Obesity has become a serious public health concern in US which affects all population, gender, age, and ethnic/cultural groups. However, the condition is more prevalent among Hispanics. Obesity is associated with reduced quality of life, poor mental health outcomes, and leading causes of death such as diabetes, cancers, stroke, and heart diseases.

Importance of Focusing on Obesity

Obesity and overweight are more prevalent among Hispanics who are disproportionately affected compared to Whites. Hispanics are considered minority and majority of the population have low income, education, low insurance coverage, and access to healthcare services. As such focusing on this population will help in determine factors playing role in obesity, the best and effective measures to be taken to prevent or resolve the issue.

Clinical Impact

How the Content be Related to Clinical Practice in General

The increased cases of obesity posses a significant burden in clinical practice. Healthcare professionals, especially nurses are overwhelmed by intense nature of caring for diabetic patients including treatment in clinical setting, drug management, bariatric surgery, and obesity management.

How the Cultural Community Needs and Details of the Health Issue Impact Specialty Area, Clinical Practice, or Community

Effective realization of the cultural needs of Hispanics requires that nurses should provide culturally competent care to ensure positive patient outcomes. As such, nursing practice is likely to be impacted by ensuring that nurses learn cultural competency care.
