A Sample Answer For the Assignment: NR 351 Week 1 Discussion Nurse of the Future Nursing Core Competencies
Title: NR 351 Week 1 Discussion Nurse of the Future Nursing Core Competencies
The 10 Nurse of the Future Nursing Core Competencies outlined in Massachusetts 2016 (pg 10) are very important to our nursing careers. I believe that these competencies were chosen because they are the foundation of the nursing role. I think most of us follow these everyday while we are working or are at least able to give an example pertaining to our jobs.
The first that I feel that pertains to my job in the critical care unit at my hospital would be Teamwork and Collaboration. Without our coworkers and our team helping us we would definitely be is some sticky situations. There are times that you need more then yourself in the room to help our patients. We are always working with each other to help stabilize our patients, reposition, bounce ideas off them. Another large part of what we do is communicating with our doctors, working as a team to better serve our patients health care needs.
My second choice would be leadership. Hood (2018) believed that when a nurse displays confidence in this profession, other healthcare members perceive that the nurse possesses the knowledge, skill, and attitude for effective role performance. Especially in code situations it is very important that there is a leader running the code to be able to delegate everybody’s role in that situation. An example is being able to distinguish a RN that is giving the meds, another documenting, who is doing compressions, talking to the family, the doctor, etc. We all have to be working side by side knowing our roles in that situation. Especially for instances on rapid responses or codes on another unit we are attending. They are looking to us to be able to lead and take over. As stated in AACN 2008 (pg13), “This practice requires creativity and effective leadership and communication skills to work productively within interprofessional teams in various healthcare settings.
After reviewing the Massachusetts Nurse of the Future Nursing Core Competencies, I believe that these 10 competencies were selected because they all have an impact on patient care and are vital to the nursing profession. They act as a guide to upcoming nurses as well as increase the current care to our patients. My unit is always trying to improve patient care by keeping up with competencies to make sure we as professionals are up to date with the most recent recommendations of care for our laboring patients along with postpartum and newborn care. In order to provide safe, effective patient care, nurses must have competence with clinical skill and decision making (Hood, 2018).
The two competencies that are most important to me in my nursing career are teamwork and collaboration along with communication. Every day, we need to keep the line of communication open with our patients, nurses, doctors, family members, and other core staff. Working on a Labor & Delivery unit, each day can be similar but each patient and their plan for delivery may differ. Interacting effectively with your patient, families, and coworkers is crucial. It is also very important to keep the patient involved since we are their care provider. Promoting a mutual respect along with shared decision making allows us to keep patient satisfaction and have great outcomes along with making the patient feel like their birth plan was carried out. “Advancing the education of all nurses is increasingly recognized as essential to the future of nursing practice” (Massachusetts Nurse of the Future Nursing Core Competencies, p.4).
I feel that both teamwork and communication complement each other and allow you to build a strong support system with your coworkers and other core professionals throughout your career. When working together you can usually find the solutions that will work best for all involved. “System structure alone does not produce high reliability” (Lyndon, 2011).

A Sample Answer 2 For the Assignment: NR 351 Week 1 Discussion Nurse of the Future Nursing Core Competencies
Title: NR 351 Week 1 Discussion Nurse of the Future Nursing Core Competencies
Lucy hood explains that The Nurse of the Future Nursing Core Competencies evolved from the initial six core standards of professional nursing with additional core competencies that were deemed necessary as the population and healthcare environment continue to evolve (Hood,2017). I believe that these competencies were selected because they are detrimental to grow and advance in our careers and education. This is best supported by the mission statement of the Massachusetts Department of Higher Education Nursing Initiative, “establish a formal coalition to create a seamless progression through all levels of nursing that is based on consensus competencies which include transitioning nurses into their practice settings” (Massachusetts Nurse of the Future Nursing Core Competencies, p. 2). When I first started nursing school the standards of professional nursing were very important in helping me lay down a foundation especially with my skills and patient care. As I continue my education and as I advance in my career the competencies such as leadership and professionalism will help me assimilate to theses larger roles.
A nursing competency that will be most important to my future nursing practice is going to be leadership and evidence-based practice. I have been a registered nurse for a little over one year. As I progress in my career, I feel that my leadership role and responsibilities will constantly evolve especially as my role changes and I accept a path in either nurse management or Nurse Practitioner. At the hospital I currently work at, I am being pushed to precept new hire’s. One of the competencies that is vital in taking this new role would be leadership. Although, I have experience in leadership in some extent with patient care, delegation with nurse assistants and patients, I still feel like a novice. According to The Joint Commission, nurse leadership is lifelong endeavor, that evolves through regulated education, time and experience (Mennella, 2018). Over time as my education and confidence grows, I feel like my leadership skills will also improve.
Evidence-based practice is another core competency that I believe will be most important to my future nursing practice. Environments and technology are continuously changing and adapting. Evidence-based practice is a result of a large amount of research and root cause analysis to resolve ongoing problems. In my hospital we are now using disinfecting port protects due to best evidence-based practice to help lower catheter-related blood stream infections. There is always room for improvement, and I hope to integrate that belief with my practice as I move forward.

Title: NR 351 Week 1 Discussion Nurse of the Future Nursing Core Competencies
I definitely agree with you that our Nursing Core Competencies help to guide us in how we provide care to our patients. We always have to remember that even though this is a job that we are familiar with, many of our patients have never set foot in a hospital or had a medical procedure done. Both of the competencies you chose are great for the area you work in. It sounds like you keep yourself very organized in the OR with each one of your cases along with helping to keep things cost effective for your unit and facility. Working in the OR you have to be ready for anything and making sure that everyone is working in a safe environment. Helping your patient feel safe (while providing a safe environment) and comfortable is most important in you nursing role.

I advise you look at the requirements for these assignments at the beginning of the course and plan accordingly. I have posted the YouTube link that explains all the class assignments in detail. It is required that you watch this 32-minute video as the assignments from week 3 through 5 require that you follow the instructions to the letter to succeed. Failure to complete these assignments according to instructions might lead to a zero. After watching the video, please schedule a one-on-one with me to discuss your topic for your project by the second week of class. Use this link to schedule a 15-minute session. Please, call me at the time of your appointment on my number. Please note that I will NOT call you.

Any papers not well formatted would be returned back to you, hence, I advise you review APA formatting style. I have attached a sample paper in APA format and will also post sample discussion responses in subsequent announcements.
Your initial discussion post should be a minimum of 200 words and response posts should be a minimum of 150 words. Be advised that I grade based on quality and not necessarily the number of words you post. A minimum of TWO references should be used for your initial post. For your response post, you do not need references as personal experiences would count as response posts. If you however cite anything from the literature for your response post, it is required that you cite your reference. You should include a minimum of THREE references for papers in this course. Please note that references should be no more than 5 years old except recommended as a resource for the class. Furthermore, for each discussion board question, you need ONE initial substantive response and TWO substantive responses to either your classmates or your instructor for a total of THREE responses. There are TWO discussion questions each week, hence, you need a total minimum of SIX discussion posts for each week. I usually post a discussion question each week. You could also respond to these as it would count towards your required SIX discussion posts for the week.
I understand this is a lot of information to cover in 5 weeks, however, the Bible says in Philippians 4:13 that we can do all things through Christ that strengthens us. Even in times like this, we are encouraged by God’s word that we have that ability in us to succeed with His strength. I pray that each and every one of you receives strength for this course and life generally as we navigate through this pandemic that is shaking our world today. Relax and enjoy the course!

A Sample Answer 4 For the Assignment: NR 351 Week 1 Discussion Nurse of the Future Nursing Core Competencies
Title: NR 351 Week 1 Discussion Nurse of the Future Nursing Core Competencies
Hood says, Caring and compassion denote the nurse’s genuine concern for others and a desire to help them (Hood, 2017). When someone thinks of a nurse, they think of someone who is caring. They think of a person that wants to help a patient feel better. When I went into the nursing profession, those were my exact thoughts. I wanted to put my natural ability to show compassion, selflessness, and critical thinking to work. Nursing is a scholarly profession and practice-based discipline and is built on a foundation of knowledge that reflects nursing’s dual components of science and art (Massachusetts, 2016). Nursing is an art and what I didn’t realize was all of the other amazing qualities and skills a professional nurse possessed. I also went into this career knowing all of the opportunities I would have to advance my career and or never remain stagnant. With that being said, there is room for growth and all of the core competencies for professional nurses are vital.
Each of the ten selected competencies have such great value to the field of nursing. While, I think it is difficult to possess all ten equally, they are all equally important to provide the best care we can to our patients.
My top two competencies, with that in mind, are safety and teamwork and collaboration. We have a one to one ratio in surgery and my top priority during a case is the safety of my patient. Assuring my patients that they are in the best care and setting their minds to ease is important. Safely transferring patients from their bed to the OR table, making sure the equipment necessary for the case is in the room, pressure points checked, properly positioned and secured with the correct thermal regulation are just a few of the tasks to ensure patient safety. There are many roles involved in surgery and it takes us all working together to have a successful case for our patients. As I fast forward into my future nursing career, I am sure these competencies will still be a priority.
