Homeless people could comprise of any humankind ranging from children, disabled, the elderly, or veterans who lack appropriate housing. This population is always perceived as lazy, or unfit to mingle with the general population, making them vulnerable and sidelined. As an Advanced Public Health Nurse, my role entails working with communities to achieve optimal health through offering health promotion activities such as education, collaborating with other agencies that offer immunizations and promotion of access to other wellness screening through lobbying for policy changes. In as much as a lot of emphasis has been laid on allocating more resources on medical treatment initiatives and research in United Sates, preventing the cause of the diseases remains the most effective way of ensuring a healthy a population (DeNisco, 2024). Therefore, public health professionals have a responsibility of highlighting the gains of preventive medicine versus curative medicine to the policy makers. The homeless population is disadvantaged, lacking basic needs and certainly healthcare access. The APHNs role is not only to educate this group on the gains of seeking preventive care but also advocating for its availability to them. Christians are expected to treat each other with love. Therefore, while caring for this population, Advance Public Health Nurses (APHNs) should realize that the homeless people have been created in the image of God. Respect and love should be maintained towards them while being aware of personal worldviews that could drive them away from seeking public health services. Information that is geared towards maintaining their health should be the key role of the APHNs.

A rich picture of leadership emerges as Moses shows how important stewardship and empowering others are to the optimal functioning of a community and organization. Moses exemplified many of the qualities outlined in modern servant leadership theories as essential: compassionate love, humility, altruism, vision, trust, empowerment, authenticity, stewardship, and service among others (Patterson, 2003; Patterson & van Dierndonck, 2015). Moses was by no means perfect, but his close relationship with God allowed him to guide a rebellious nation of slaves into a relationship, identity, and purpose as the chosen people of God. (Cassi, S 2019).
What better way could I describe Moses as a leader? As Nurses, we need all these qualities to have an important impact on the care of our patients. It is never simple. Nurses are frequently cursed and rarely acknowledged for the daily challenging work performed. Nurses need to practice selflessness and consider the welfare of others, and this will make a valuable impact on patient care. Despite the obstacles, nurses continue to provide optimum care to their patients. Respectfulness and excellence as role models will enhance leadership characteristics. Moses was not flawless, but he accepted the challenge of leadership and performed admirably. They regarded him for his accomplishments.
Not only may religious leaders impact health behavior at the individual level but also at the sociocultural and environmental levels. They exert this influence via multiple channels, including scriptural impact, societal influence, and functioning as role models. They provide educational training, results in behavioral change, and give advice as they are needed.
Devotional Question Week 3
Moses is an example of a situational leader in the Bible. The book of Exodus shows us that there was a crisis amongst the people of God. They were enslaved in Egypt and were crying out for deliverance. Hearing that cry for deliverance, God called Moses to lead the Israelites out of Egypt and into the Promised Land. Ultimately, their journey was fraught with trials and tribulations that lasted 40 years. Remember your post must contain 200 words not counting a salutation or the references. Blessings!

Thinking of the story of Moses and the Israelites and other leaders in the Bible, how might remembering the “leaders of faith” shape our approach to nursing and/ or nurse education in contemporary settings?
I always love the movie “The Ten Commandments,” filmed back in 1956 with Charlton Heston playing Moses. Moses was raised in royalty and had not a drop of blue blood. He was loved by the Pharaoh. In the movie back then, on Pharaoh’s deathbed, Moses was the last name that came out from his dying breath, making Ramesses hate Moses more. Moses got treated with all the privileges only royalty could ever get. Moses planted in Egypt for the most significant purpose of delivering the people of God out of Egypt and into the promised land. According to Nelson, “Moses is the old testament’s greatest prophet’ (Nelson,2020). Moses was a fugitive, a mediator, a negotiator, and a judge. Moses did not write the ten commandments, but he was the one who delivered them to the people. Nurses are a modern version of Moses. Not as great as biblical but in the world of medicine. Nurses are God’s healing hands. Nurses as patients’ advocates are like Moses, who, on behalf of the people of Egypt, he will ask and talk to God. Nurses mediate between the patient and other healthcare team members. Nurses work at the bedside 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Nurses see patients at their worst and best. Nurses report to the physician any early acute changes, complaints, or abnormal findings that save patients from dying. Nurses nurture, comfort, and bear the brunt of patients’ anger and frustration. I have experienced and seen how the nursing profession gets hurt when a confused, violent patient exhibit violent behaviors. Nurses got kicked, hit, slapped, punched, and verbally abused. Regardless of what nurses go through, we end our shifts. Another day is done. We go home to our loved ones and seek comfort. We pray for strength from God.

Nursing is a calling. This has always been my believe. For you to be a nurse and care for someone in their lowest point of their lives means you have been called to be the peace of the patient. It takes compassion, determination, perseverance, and the spirit of endurance to nurse someone. Looking at the story of Moses, he was called by God to lead the people of Israel when they were enslaved in Egypt. This role didn’t come easy as he was to face Pharoah to advocate for the release of the Israelites. As nurses we have the responsibility to advocate for the good of our patients in our care. We speak to the physicians and other healthcare professionals who are on the care team of the patients. If we as nurses are prompt and persistent to ensure the patient gets good care, there is a positive outcome in the health of the patients. There are times we will be faced with difficult situations in our nursing profession, but it does not mean we must give up. these experiences shape us for greater task ahead. In the case where other care team members are making our work difficult and failing to listen to us, we have the option of reporting to the higher authority in our field to ensure patient safety. When Moses met a resistance from Pharoah, he did not give up but rather went back to speak with God for guidance.
“Looking at the story of Moses, he was called by God to lead the people of Israel when they were enslaved in Egypt.”
Yes, Moses was called upon by God to lead, and he did, as a testament of his faith. Those who lead by faith, are leading with a higher purpose. All nurses are leaders, formally or informally, by the very nature of their work. Nurses are called to action, and when called and led by faith, they transcend the vocation and find greater meaning and satisfaction in their work, creating more fulfilled and positive lives.
I really enjoyed reading your post. I could not agree with you more in that nursing is definitely a calling, and I strongly believe it was mine. I loved how you related this to the story of Moses, and how he was called upon by God to undertake this impossible yet worthy task. As nurses, we are challenged daily, and we are asked to accomplish the impossible every day-emotionally, physically, and mentally. Yet through all of the trials and resistance we are faced with, we can overcome with God as our strength and shield. As a nurse of 12 years now, it still continues to be such an honor and privilege to get to be God’s servant and provide amazing care, while getting to make a difference in someone’s life. My path to nursing may not have been as direct or easy as I would have liked it to be, however all the experiences, challenges and growth I went through, has made me the nurse I am today. During the time I was not as thankful for my situations, but now looking back, I can be so thankful to God and remember that he has the ultimate plan, and everything happens for a reason and to trust his plan. Thank you for sharing.
The population that I will likely serve in my future role as an advanced practice nurse is the African American populations. According to evidence, African Americans are highly predisposed to health issues of disparity than any other ethnic minority group in the US. The high predisposition of African Americans to health disparities or inequity is attributed to the influence of factors such as their socioeconomic status and racial profiling in the state. The risk of health conditions such as heart disease and depression among the African Americans is also significantly high (Colen et al., 2018). Therefore, I believe that I will contribute to addressing the health inequalities facing African Americans in a number of ways. Firstly, I will advocate the provision of equal opportunities that enhance their access to health. I will ensure that African Americans have enhanced access to healthcare that they need through enrolling them to the Affordable Healthcare Plans and ensuring that policies that are implemented in the state promotes their health. I will also engage in the provision of health education to this population to address the health disparities affecting them (Taylor, 2019). The health education will target at creating awareness among them on the health risks they are predisposed to and ways of preventing or minimizing them.
The issues of diversity and global perspectives of care contributes to my understanding of health equity as it relates to the African Americans. The diversity and global perspectives provides me with enhanced understanding of the effective interventions that can be used to address the issue of health equality. It also informs my understanding of the roles that advanced practice nurses play in promoting equity in health (Colen et al., 2018). Lastly, the issues inform my understanding about the efficient allocation of scarce resources to meet the diverse needs of the vulnerable populations in our societies.
