Question 1

An EHR product can improve patient outcomes and patient safety in a patient with multiple chronic illnesses managed by various medical specialists. The EHR can provide accurate, up-to-date, and comprehensive information about the patient at the point of care to each specialist. This will help each provider with the patient’s other diagnoses and treatment plans and avoid prescribing medications that may interact with other prescribed drugs (Kataria & Ravindran, 2020). The EHR will also improve providers’ communication and collaboration, facilitate care coordination, and improve patient outcomes. Furthermore, the EHR will enable the providers to make an accurate diagnosis based on the patient history, reduce medical errors, and provide safer care.

Informatics has significantly improved the design of healthcare work systems, which has increased safety and improved the quality of care by alleviating barriers to care delivery. It achieves this by identifying barriers in the healthcare work systems and developing measures to eradicate them. Informatics technology has improved the quality of patient care and patient safety through systems that have clinical decision support, clinical flags and reminders, and medication alerts (Carayon et al., 2019). These technologies allow better tracking and reporting of consultations and diagnostic tests and ensure the availability of complete patient data, which improves clinical efficiency and mitigates errors in patient care caused by lack or loss of patient data.

Informatics and technology are paving the way to a revitalized health system that will efficiently handle patient information and find disease trends. In the future, advances in informatics and technology will be used to predict diseases among patient populations (Carayon et al., 2019). This will guide healthcare providers in identifying the appropriate interventions to prevent diseases or mitigate their impact.

Question 2

The assignment on the potential informatics solutions that can enhance and guarantee patient safety was particularly beneficial. I learned that predictive analytics and clinical decision support system (CDSS) as informatics solutions that improve patient safety. Predictive analytics help healthcare providers and organizations detect adverse events and implement the necessary interventions (Keim-Malpass & Moorman, 2021). I also learned that nurses use predictive analytics to improve their cognition, which guides them in making complex clinical decisions.

The assignment enlightened me that the CDSS help providers reduce the rate of medical errors through the effective use of electronic medical records. It also helps to minimize unnecessary or duplicate testing and other components of diagnostic tests. CDSS is associated with reduced hospital stay and the prevalence of hospital-acquired infections (Sutton et al., 2020). Providers can leverage the CDSS to prescribe medications with increased precision and accuracy levels that improve overall patient safety.
