An understanding of statistics is essential if the numerous reports and documents issued within the healthcare industry are to be scrutinized and considered critically. There has been an increase in the development of research-based and evidence-based practice (EBP) in healthcare over the last two decades.

Understanding statistics and analysis helps healthcare personnel make sense of the research studies that underpin EBP and enables practitioners to undertake their investigations. Health care practices are not based on research and are not assessed, planned, and evaluated to see if it makes a difference in patient care, leading to unsafe practices and patient harm (Scott & Mazhindu, 2014).

In the operating room, we use statistical data to evaluate patient care, such as that related to patient positioning pressure injuries. Statistics are also used to develop quality measures or metrics related to surgical on-time starts, operating room turnover times, surgeon block utilization, case cancellations on the day of surgery, and patient through-put times.

Other applications of statistics in the operating room are staffing plans, cost per case, materials management, and resource allocation. This data is used for best practices in patient care, operational room efficiency, and value-based healthcare practices within the hospital.

Your patient positioning patient injuries example was remarkable.

Statistical information is invaluable in determining what combination of goods and services to produce, which resources to b allocation in producing them and to which populations to offer them. Healthcare statistics are critical allocative and production efficiency. Inevitably, allocation decisions involve trade-offs-off the costs of lost or missed opportunities in choosing one economic decision over another. Reliable statistical information minimizes the risks of health care trade-offs.

Understanding statistical concept is important in health care because it helps to get the best possible outcomes for the patients and helping them to get the best care possible, it will also help to identify patient care trends by using data.

Statistics is greatly influenced in health care operation in the electronic medical records units, because they contains lots of important information’s such as birth weights, birth rates, morality rates, diagnosis, and testing result of the patients, which can help to answer questions through data analysis (Helbig & Ambrose, 2018). Due to the analyzed data, there would be quality care delivery to the patients (Helbig & Ambrose, 2018).

As an organization, statistics helps to know how many people in the country have a disease or how many people are infected with dsease within a certain period of time.

Know the affected age group by their location, race, ethnic group, sex, age, profession, income level, and level of education. Which will help to identify health disparities. Furthermore, it helps to know whether a particular treatment is safe and effective for their patients. Also, to know the birth and death rate, how many people have access to and use health care in the organization in a period of time.

The quality and efficiency of the health care that we are rendering to the patients. Understanding the impact of government programs and policies on health care delivery or systems. Moreover, identifying the risk factors for different type of diseases (Medlineplus, 2020).

All these will help nurses to care for their patients appropriately, because the data would have helped identify some weak or strong. It can also help to get needed material or resources needed for patients care.

Statistical knowledge help us to use the proper methods to collect the data, employ the correct analyses, and effectively present the results. Statistics is a crucial process behind how to make decisions based on data, and make predictions. Statistics allows you to understand a subject much more deeply.

Title:  HLT-362 Topic 1 DQ 2: Discuss why it is important for a person working in health care to understand statistical concepts

Health statistics comprises of data that give an information of a descriptive summary about health. This statistical data together with statistical concepts are important in the following ways elaborated below to person working in healthcare.

Health care providers use statistical data to monitor trends as well as the conditions in a local area and make a comparison with other geographical area as well as nationwide or globally; this helps to easily monitor the possible risks causing a certain condition or affecting people of a certain age using the data collected.

Statistical data analyzed in the healthcare facility enable in fair public and private fund allocation together with determining how and where research efforts should be centralized at most at an individual level or across.

Statistical questionnaire by a person in a healthcare setting help patients be satisfied with their care and this trigger them having the urge of follow-up as well supervision and this as well help practitioners or caregivers to have a better understanding of the patient information therefore effective treatment.

Statistics is important at an individual level in healthcare for it aids in making important critical decisions and opinions basing data as the determinant and this can be of help when critically assessing the quality of analyses presented by others.

Statistics enable one to analyze and figure out claims basing them on quantitative evidence, and this enable one to find a difference between dubious and reasonable facts which is an important aspect in data interpretation that is presented by people from motived which are unknown.

Statistical help is required for individual decision making for we live in a world of information and for one to be well informed, accurate and correct statistical concepts are required at an individual level.

Some Examples in real life are:

Practitioners predict diseases basing results on statistical concepts. Where one example is a survey showing approximately 80% of patients have cancer from a local geographical area, statistical skills and data analysis when involved may determine the effects of cancer in the body and a conclusion may be drawn that smoking is the major reason as to why cancer cases are popular in a certain region.

Practitioners also use statistics such as in the current pandemic of COVID-19 disease and have been giving a conclusion after analyzing statistical data that the most affected persons to a point of death are individuals having chronic diseases and the aged peoples. This has enabled in creating awareness and informing of the precautionary measures to be taken thoroughly most by the ones having chronic diseases.

This is really sad, with lots of unanswered questions. Nurses are also being manipulated, as we are the ones who end up administering these drugs to our patients. I have seen cases where patients come in for admission, are tagged violent and pumped with medication (anti psychotic) to calm them down, but instead they deteriorate slowly and die. Many facilities are making money from these problems, so they would rather pretend not know than forfeit the money.

It is essential for a person working in healthcare to understand statistical concepts.  Statistical analysis helps healthcare providers find correlations between entities.  Statistical data helps providers, such as nurses,  understand trends in patient care, improve outcomes and develop evidence-based practice (EBP).

(Helbig & Ambrose, 2018) EBP is important to nurses all over the world to create guidelines and implementation to improve their skills and knowledge using research-based strategies.  Alqahtani et al., 2019)

I work in an adult Acute Rehabilitation unit.  We frequently have patients with severe Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI) who have extended hospital stays.  Some of our TBI patients stay on our unit for 5-6 weeks so their hospital stays from admission into the ER to discharge can be over two months.  These patients have a higher risk of acquiring venous thromboembolisms (VNEs).  Statical data can be used in the unit to track and monitor occurrences of TBI patients who acquire VNE or PEs related to immobilization, length of stay, and types of anticoagulants used.    (Zhang et al., 2020)

For some reason, my department does not utilize this type of data on a staff nurse level which is unfortunate but I do plan on being able to create a study on the unit I work at after I take this class and learn more about EBP development.  I would assume that I need permission to access files or work with the manager to determine how to obtain and analyze data from our patients.  I would be able to use this type of information to determine correlations which can then be used to decrease the occurrence of VNEs/PEs with TBI patients.

Statistical Application In Health Care

Statistics has widely been used in various fields to achieve goals and improve performance through statistical-based decision-making. Healthcare, like other fields, has used statistics widely to help guide decision-makers to make appropriate decisions. In addition, various statistical analyses have been applied in the healthcare sector to explore the performances of various organizations (Kamble et al.,2018).

Therefore, the purpose of this discussion is to explore how statistics have been applied in healthcare and discuss how significant it is to leadership, health promotion, safety, and quality. In addition, this write-up will explore the use of statistical knowledge in the emergency department and how the statistical data is obtained in the emergency room, and how the knowledge is applied in day-to-day operations and support of decision-making.

The Application of Statistics in Healthcare

Statistics has widely been applied in health environments to enhance quality, safety, health promotion, and leadership. Statistics play a critical role in helping healthcare professionals make informed decisions regarding treatment and management directions concerning patients (Lepage, 2019).

For example, in the current world where women advance their careers as much as men, the demand of bearing children can be a challenge since it is difficult for them to wait, and as they age, their chances of giving birth also get slimmer while pregnancy and complication chances heighten. In such cases, statistical models can be used to decide the best time to get babies hence improving quality.

Safety is also key in the care environment; hence statistics are applied to improve safety. For example, in the search for more effective medication, statistics is used in determining safety by conducting clinical trials. Through careful analysis, statistics can be used to show the extent of safety of using the medications, whether the use of the medication can be rolled out to the general population and what safety measures can be put in place to ensure that patients are safe from its usage (Grove & Cipher, 2019).

Statistics is also key in health promotion. For example, the use of statistical models can be key in revealing disease trends such as prevalence and causes among the population to reveal the most at-risk population. Such a decision can then be used to formulate relevant health promotion strategies to help the identified population have better outcomes. Statistics can also be used in healthcare to promote and support leadership. Statistics can be used to analyze how a healthcare organization performs in particular areas in reference to the established benchmarks.

Such analysis is important in informing the leadership on what to do to improve performance and ensure that every organization’s performance is either at par with expectations or exceeds expectations.

Acquiring Statistical Data and Applying Statistical Knowledge in Day-to-Day Operations At the Emergency Department

The day-to-day operations in the emergency department involve the acquisition of statistical data and using statistical knowledge to make appropriate decisions. One way of obtaining statistics is by recording patient demographic data such as age, gender, academic level, address, and income, among others.

In addition, statistics sources also involve patient information recorded and obtainable at the clinic, such as height, weight, blood cell count, and temperature, among others (Grove & Cipher, 2019). The emergency department plays a critical role in any healthcare facility as it is the department where patients who visit the facility and require immediate attention are admitted. Therefore, the admission records also offer valuable statistical data.

For example, data can be collected regarding the total number of patients who reported to the department because of trauma or those who came to the department because of acute illness. Such statistical data can be key when making a decision, such as budgeting for healthcare equipment to buy in a calendar year for effective patient care, services, and outcomes.

The major reason for recording such important information is to offer the providers relevant ideas on how to proceed with the patient care initiative and how best to maximize the care outcomes. For example, the providers are better placed to determine the right nutritional or dietary needs indicated for the patients as informed by the statistics (Grove & Cipher, 2019). As such, the emergency department or emergency room offers a rich ground for obtaining useful or important statistical data as well as the application of the same statistical data for better patient care.

The statistical data obtained during the day-to-day operations at the emergency department can be used in decision-making. For example, the statistics on the number of people admitted at the department, times of admission, whether day and night, or the frequency during different times of the year can be used to effectively make decisions used in solving problems such as overcrowding at the emergency department (Grove & Cipher, 2019).

Such data can be used in making decisions on the best triage strategies to use and the number of personnel needed at different times of the day and various months of the year, as overcrowding has been shown to be a major problem at the ED.

Conclusion

Statistics play a critical role in the various departments of healthcare, such as the emergency department. Therefore, statistical data is collected from various sources to help healthcare providers make informed care decisions. Some of the decisions include the type of equipment to purchase and the strategies to use during triage to solve the problem of overcrowding.
