            Psychosocial factors that can affect healthcare professionals include social isolation, anxiety, and stress. These psychosocial factors can make healthcare professionals become isolated from people who fail to socialize with colleagues and patients. When healthcare professionals are affected by these psychosocial factors, their capacity to provide patient education is negatively impacted (Halpert, 2018). Healthcare professionals who experience anxiety cannot inspire the patient when delivering patient education. When healthcare professionals experience stress, they cannot effectively provide education. Social isolation also impacts the mental health of healthcare professionals, which compromises their ability to provide patient education.

Give examples of psychosocial factors that affect the patient and the effect those factors could have on patient education

            Examples of psychosocial factors in the patient include marital status and mood states such as depression, stress, social isolation, and cultural norms and values.  Mood status is the dire psychosocial factor that affects and negatively influences a patient’s education. A patient with marital issues is psychologically disturbed and cannot concentrate on learning provided by a healthcare professional. Similarly, changes in the patient mood to stress, distress, and depression affect the patient’s education negatively by prompting the patient to isolate socially (Halpert, 2018). Cultural norms and values may also have an adverse impact on patient education, especially when the norms and values contradict health education.

Explain what is meant by personality styles and give examples of approaches that could be used to help the patient. Include self-perception as a factor

            Personality connotes the combination of characteristics, behavioral, cognitive, and perceptual that describes a person.  As such, personality styles can be defined as the comparative preferences across situations by an individual patient (Taylor, 2020). Personality is regarded as the guiding principle of an individual because it avails arrangement of traits and coping mechanisms in patients. As such, understanding the personality styles of a patient is essential in developing a healthy relationship and finding an effective treatment approach. A clinician needs to exercise self-perception to watch the behavior and attitude portrayed by patients. Vital approaches to personality styles include the inclusion of emotions or logic in discussions with the patients.

List the steps in adjustment to illness and how the patient copes with each step

            Adjusting to illness is an intricate process and usually requires the intervention of clinicians. The first step involves denial. Denial ought to be temporary and clinicians should engage patients in active education to help them accept the illness and work on the best solution. The next step is to accept the condition. The subsequent step is characterized by fear of the consequences of the illness. Here, clinicians are needed to provide thorough patient education about the illness to raise awareness. When the patient experiences fear and anxiety, clinicians should team up with the family members to offer psychological support. 

Explain the health professional’s role in teaching the patient at different life stages

            In the early stages of life, children entirely depend on their parents. As such, all the relevant information about the child is given to the parents. When the children grow, clinicians provide education relevant to the child’s age to help in averting common illnesses. For instance, sex education can be provided directly to teenagers to prevent cases of STIs.  In adulthood, healthcare professionals use effective methods and strategies to help patients maintain their well-being. In the late-life stages, patient education is focused on the provision of transparent information and psychological support.

Define the role of the family in patient education

            Family members are always the closes people to the patient making them have a huge impact on the patient education.  Family members are crucial in helping healthcare professionals to provide care, contribute to decision-making, enhance patient safety and quality of care, and help in home care (Wittink & Oosterhaven, 2018). Therefore, patient education should cover family members who in turn deliver the information to the patient. They can also compel the patient to adhere to the recommendations of the clinician either through motivation or other techniques of psychological influence.

How might the family influence the compliance of the patient and what measures can the health care professional use in communication with the family?

            Clinicians need to provide proper education to family members and highlight the adverse consequences of noncompliance by the patient. In turn, the family being cautious about the negative outcomes may influence the patient to comply with all the directions of the clinician (Wittink & Oosterhaven, 2018). The measures that can be used in communicating with the family include active listening, paying attention to nonverbal communication, summarizing points discussed and asking a question to show understanding of what is discussed, and ensuring patient privacy.
