The Marshall Plan, developed under President Truman and George C. Marshall, was put in place after there was significant downfall in Western Europe and was leading to possible starvation for the people due to a slow rebuilding of the economy and means of living being affected, leading to Communism growth within Italy and France as discussed by Corbett et al. (2014) The Marshall Plan, also known as the European Recovery Program, helped aid Europe by placing a stipulation on the European nations, having them work together in order to receive aid, thus enforcing unity through the enticement, hoping to lessen the political popularity of the French and Italian Communist and rid the further forming of coalition government with them as noted by Corbett et al. (2014). According to ushistory.org (2020). by accepting the plan, it was giving an option to the European countries to receive goods and money, bettering the economy by purchasing the American goods, being able to benefit both nations in the postwar economy and the threat of communism takeover in the Western European nations ceased to occur due to the interactions between them and the U.S. with this plan. Containment played a huge role in thwarting communism within the U.S. by putting in place a policy to prevent the spread of Soviet and communist influences in Western European nations as discussed by JFK Library (n.d.). The U.S. was fearful of the spread of communism of the USSR would eventually go from country to country causing a destabilization of one nation and then trickle down to others eventually leading to a communist domination in the European regions as discussed by Wilde (2018). With this said, the U.S came up with a solution that if they were able to thwart the influence of the communism at the primary source or even intrigue other nations with more funds/supplies than what the communist nations were offering, would deter the other nations from going with them. It may be noted that the containment had met its goals as strategy to eliminate communism from spreading from the Soviet Union to other nations, but we still to this day are experiencing containment towards China and North Korea according to Wilde (2020). As I look at the effect of containment, I would have to say that it did make an effective mark on thwarting communism spreading as noted above with the information provided. Vietnam was one of the focuses of President Kennedy’s foreign policy and fight against communism, as a part of the containment policy, Vietnam was a part of the plan, by sending in advisors and troops to help support the South Vietnamese government as noted in Corbett et al. (2014). From the reading of Proctor (2016), quoted Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara, “To defend Southeast Asia, we must meet the challenge in South Vietnam. In communist hands, this area would pose a most serious threat to the security of the United States and to the family of free-world nations”, hence showing that Vietnam was American’s proof that it could meet the global challenge of communist wars of liberation.
I believe to a certain extent the U.S should have feared a communist subversion related to the topics at hand. The Soviet Union had already achieved to be successful to a certain point. But this fear of further communistic advancement was real and a threat at that time. By setting these policies in place as discussed, I believe it helped ease the fear of the subversion of communism throughout more nations and aligned the U.S with these nations to not partake in the communistic influence.
