Glendale Community College Alcohol Prevention Treatment and Policy Questions
Question Description
I’m working on a psychology discussion question and need a sample draft to help me learn.
1. Identify an ATOD (alcohol, tobacco, or other drug) substance of your choice. Explain why your chosen ATOD is a public health concern. For example, synthetic, illegally made fentanyl is a concern due to its high potency being 50-100x more potent than morphine (NIDA, 2022). Illegally made and distributed fentanyl is now the most common drug involved in overdose deaths in the United States (SAMHSA, 2022).
2. Severity of your chosen alcohol, tobacco, or other drug (ATOD) to include current statistics, data, facts and epidemiology, trends, and populations/locations most affected or at risk.

3. Identify at least three (3) prevention programs or strategies to address your chosen substance. Note that prevention occurs prior to use. It is to prevent populations from using in the future. It is distinct from treatment programs. For example, school health education, social media prevention strategies or campaigns, or faith-based programs. Harm reduction models are also welcomed to be included. Examples of harm reduction are needle-exchange programs, low dose fentanyl pop-up tents, etc.
4. Identify at least three (3) treatment programs to address your chosen substance. Note that treatment is for people already using the substance or in the process of wanting to quit using a substance. Examples of treatment programs may be counseling programs to manage triggers and stress, contingency management programs that use incentives for people who refrain from using, residential treatment centers, or motivational interviewing for people who have mixed feeling regarding change (NIH, 2021; NIDA, 2022).
5. Lastly, identify at least one (1) policy related to your substance. A policy related to ATOD is typically a law, taxation, or some requirement that prohibits or limits use, sales, etc. in protection of the public. For example, for vaping – there is a policy in California banning flavored vapes that appeal to younger users such as bubble gum, sour candy/gummies, etc. or there is taxation, laws against alcohol use and driving, legalization of marijuana, etc.
