Unit 2 Discussion

Watching a film, reading a book, a social media post, listening to a song and even a TV commercial as well as even short videos can have a long-term effect on individuals and speak to us. One such piece is a TED Talk by Doctor B. J. Miller who discusses the issue of dying and what really matters at the end of one’s life. Miller offers a personal experience of what his disability and how despite its limitation, his is physician. Dr. Miller asserts that death is an inevitable part of life and one that each person should be prepared to endure, whether good or painful (Miller, 2015). However, his focus is that death should not entail suffering, even for those which chronic diseases and need healthcare.

What resonates with me from this talk is that people do not have to be afraid of death and that the dying process is an essential part of life which implores all to be patient and show compassion; especially between the care receiver and the caregiver. According to Dr. Miller, palliative care is essential as it makes life better despite one facing the prospect of dying when it is determined by those who are in such a process.

The speaker of this TED talk appeals to my emotions and the need to appreciate that what really matters as people come to the end of their lives is humanity and real love to change each one’s experiences of life. The talk is categorical that many things are bound in life and one must be willing and ready to have a better living despite their situations and experiences (Miller, 2015). As nurses and healthcare providers, dealing with patients needs effective care and genuine human concern to change their lives and perspectives. End of life patients need practical support that allows them to feel human as they were before their current situation and state of health. Providers should be creative to attain the biomedical principle of beneficence, especially in end-of-life situations.

Hello, I am a music fan. There’s one song that touches my heart everytime I hear it. I heard it growing up I love the song, but on a certain day when my husband’s mother passed away the song Lean on me by Bill Withers started playing. All I could do was to hold him and sing the song to him.

Many years later my mom passed away so my husband came and held me and sang the song to me. We would always be there for each other.

It’s amazing how music can affect ones life. I have a lot of songs that makes me feel good some that makes me cry , but when I get let a good cry out I feel like everything is going to be alright, because another good song will play.

Now when I hear Lean on me I just sit and cry because my friend my buddy my husband has passed away sure I can find another friend but it’s not the same. I still love the song sometimes I smile when I hear it. I think songs can get you through anything. It’s really fun when I am alone I like to turn on my radio and just dance around the house and just dance around silly.

Writing is all around us.  We may read words on a page or backlit screen, or we may watch them played out on a big screen.  Sometimes these words can have a positive or even influential impact on us.

Think of a piece of writing or video that really resonated with you and made an impact. This could be a book, an article, a social media post, a song, a film, or even a TV commercial or other short video.  Perhaps you watched a film that caused you to have strong emotions.  Maybe you read an article that you felt really spoke truth to you.  You may have even heard a song that made you think of a loved one.

  • Why did it resonate with/speak to you?
  • What did the author of that piece do well to make an impact on you as the audience?

I have a lot of problems with my mental health sometimes, so I turn to a lot of media to make myself feel better. I look at a lot of stories through games, movies, books, etc. and all so I can make myself feel better. I see people with problems like mine and I sympathize with them because I know how it feels. Seeing them get better helps my mind feel at ease. One of the stories I’ve come upon that resonated most is a game called Celeste, where a girl has to climb to the top of a mystic mountain for her own mental health. She came to the mountain feeling less than herself until she actually became less than herself. Her depression and negative feelings physically materialize and start to harass her all the way up the mountain. it shows her things about her past, things about her that really messed her up. She finally comes to the thought that she needs to conquer and abandon her negative side, which would be effective but not the correct decision for her journey. She, like, everyone else needs to instead accept her mental issues and learn from them to advance her future. It may be small, but it was influential in my life.

One speech or little speaking presentation I saw on YouTube was “Marc Mero’s Emotional Mother’s Day Story” it spoke to me or talked to me in a certain way to respect love, care, and most of cherishing those precious moments in your life especially the ones with your mother. Moms are you most beautiful thing to happen to anyone’s life women in general but moms are different for many reasons yeah some or not good moms but everything happens for a reason I truly believe that. Marc Mero was talking about how his mother would go to his games and cheer him on but he would feel embarrassed about his mother being there chanting for him. He also talked about how you’re defined by your actions and who you hang out with if you hang out with losers you will also become a loser it’s true and simple how this thing called life happens. I felt for him because I know we all probably haven’t been the best son or daughter we all mess up and make mistakes but what matters is that you make every day worth it and tell your parents how much you love them and to Charisse, those happy moments called life.
