Unit 5 Discussion

Healthcare providers need communication skills to enhance their interactions and rapport with patients in different care settings. This course is about effective communication and what nurses can do to attain it despite certain challenges that they may have in their workplaces (Sibiya, 2018). The most compelling topics that I learned in this course include effective use of tone in communication, use of punctuation marks, and how to develop effective messaging to different audiences as well as formal communication between employees and their seniors or managers in corporate situations. These topics all demonstrate the importance of nurturing communication skills in healthcare settings for care providers like nurses and physicians (Bullington et al., 2019). The topic in values and development of personal value statement was also compelling as it offers a host of information on the best way to interact with individuals in any setting. These topics are compelling because they illustrate the overall need for providers to develop better interventions and interactions with patients and their colleagues as well as their management.

Participation in discussions helped me understand the subject matter of communication in a more comprehensive manner and appreciate the different perspectives among the different individuals. The discussions gave me a chance to develop a better understanding of how to communicate with different audiences at different times (Rubio-Navarro et al., 2020). These discussions allowed me to develop effective communication skills as a healthcare provider to enhance effective care delivery and improve patient outcomes. I do not believe that there is anything that is not clear and requires clarification as the topics covered in the course are explicit.

Yielding additional valuable information is essential for better understanding of subject matters in different scenarios. Therefore, different approaches like more case studies on various components of communication would have led to increased valuable information. The second approach would entail getting a chance to interact with people in real situations to value the importance of effective communication for providers in clinical settings.

For this Discussion Board, please complete the following

Review and reflect on the knowledge that you have gained from this course. Based on your review and reflection, write 200-250 words on the following:

  • What were the most compelling topics that you learned in this course?
  • How did participating in discussions help your understanding of the subject matter? Is anything still unclear that could be clarified?
  • What approaches could have yielded additional valuable information?

One thing that was compelling about a topic that I learned in this course was how a mature and correct way to send texts, messages, Emails, etc. it’s crazy to me at least how much like in real life you look good you automatically make a good impression on people and they get and since that this can be true also about when writing an important professional email let’s say to a company. Making and good impression on your spelling and grammar are essential for good impressions. The discussion boards will help me by reading my classmate’s comments and their ideas and explaining what they mean and be understand the subject at hand. Everything is pretty self-explanatory the videos and the live chats and the discussion boards make it all come together so perfectly. Approaches that I’m hoping to start doing is making sure my emails are sent as professional and mature as possible so that companies, bosses, and employers/ employees can get a better impression and make it very clear what I’m trying to say and explain myself the best way possible through email, messages, text, etc. This class has tonight me a lot and I have learned a lot from being able to be in this class.

Hey y’all,

It is hard for me to believe that the first quarter is coming to end already. I suppose time really does fly when you are having fun, as the old saying goes. I personally feel as though I have learned so many helpful things in ENGL104. From the grammar and punctuation lessons in intellipath, to managing our tone and word choice, or even addressing how we feel about writing, I found it all to be compelling information. As I have said previously, I have been out of school for quite some time. I remembered the basics from grade school as far as grammar went, but it was nice to cover proper sentence structure once again. Before the class started, I had not realized how much my writing struggled. I think having the opportunity to share those feelings of anxiety due to being out of the academic arena, has been helpful in keeping me from stressing about sharing my work. I tend to over share, which I think can sometimes make my writing hard to follow. Which is also where getting that refresher on proper sentence structure, as well as use of grammar was extremely helpful to me.

Participating in the Discussions, whether in the discussion board posts each week, or in our live chats, I found to be beneficial as well. Getting to hear each of my fellow classmate’s perspective was refreshing. There are so many different views here in our class. I find that during our chats, I might have a certain view on a topic going into the discussion but coming out I have a new one. I credit that open mindedness to the feedback in those discussions. Personally, for me it was also beneficial to hear everyone else’s struggles and strengths in writing. I was able to find issue in my own work, by analyzing areas that others struggled with. The same goes for strengths in their writing styles.

Overall, I feel confident as the session ends. The only other approach I feel could have helped to yield additional valuable information would have been more actual writing. I think that getting to physically implement the techniques and styles of writing we covered would have helped me to get a better understanding of what was covered. Perhaps writing an essay for peer review, and then a developing a final draft based on the corrections. Not only would we have gotten to utilize the writing techniques learned, but we also could have had the chance to enhance our editing and proofreading skills. Those are areas in which I feel I still need to work on, and I think it would have been beneficial to get to bring our writing into play.
