The Four Spheres of Political Action in Nursing

Please discuss the four spheres of political action in nursing. In addition, please develop a brief argument sharing how these spheres are interconnected and overlapping by applying an example from your practice. What are some ethical considerations here?

When I work with new RNs I make them familiar with how to find the Nurse Practice Act for reference or if they have questions regarding their scope of practice.

I do believe the four spheres are connected to the Illinois Practice Act.

Government: I think out of the four spheres, government ties in the most to the Illinois Nurse Practice Act.  Government is definitely tied into the Nurse Practice Act, because it is at the state level. Each state can have a different Practice Act with different limitations.  Therefore, each person needs to familiarize themselves with the Practice Act within their state.  Also, if these are not followed, it could go back on the nurse and there could be legal repercussions that would be followed out by attorneys and the courts.

Organization: The organizations can benefit from the Illinois Nurse Practice Act because everything is set out of them as far as what a nurse can and can not do, and they do not have to worry about determining what is appropriate. They can make job descriptions based on the law. This can make their job much easier.

Community:  The community can benefit as well.  The community can run off of organizations and people in the workplace, so if everyone else is benefitting from the Nurse Practice Act being in place, then the community overall will as well.

Workplace: Regardless of where a nurse works, he/she must abide by the Illinois Nurse Practice act and the roles defined within their scope of practice. As I mentioned in my initial post, there are so many different types of nurse, but we all must abide by the same rules set forth in our scope of practiced defined by laws.  Of course there are different types of certifications that one can attain to broaden their abilities, but we must follow the laws regardless of what type of nursing we do.

Thank you for your post. I also see that the role of the modern nurse has expanded; we are the key factors influencing community health. Community based healthcare is important, and nurses can lead the way in forming the community’s view of healthcare organizations when they become more involved in the community (Fooladi, 2015). One goal of nursing is to provide a compassionate and well-managed continuum of care (Fooladi, 2015). We can do this more effectively when we grow our political leadership skills. When I campaign on behalf of the community I am advocating for comprehensive care on all levels. As a nurse professional, I can join organizations that endorse patient and community rights. I also plan to join the American Nurses Association after I receive my graduate degree. I believe that another part of providing comprehensive healthcare is creating an inviting and safe environment for the patients and medical staff. There is nothing worse than walking into a medical facility seeing patients unattended, scarce resources and equipment, and the nursing staff overworked and understaffed. As a supporter of both the community and nurses’ rights, I am taking a practical action-based approach to community healthcare.

I read the beginning of the Illinois Nurse Practice Act. It states, “The practice of professional and practical nursing in the State of Illinois is hereby declared to affect the public health, safety, and welfare and to be subject to regulation and control in the public interest. It is further declared to be a matter of public interest and concern that the practice of nursing, as defined in this Act, merit and receive the confidence of the public and that only qualified persons be authorized to so practice in the State of Illinois. This Act shall be liberally construed to best carry out these subjects and purposes” http://www.ilga.gov/legislation/ilcs/ilcs5.asp?ActID=1312&ChapterID=24 (n.d.).

The four spheres of nursing policy are interconnected in this scenario because the state government (government sphere) is implementing regulations based on public interest. Therefore, the workforce (workplace sphere) is affecting hospitals and other health centers by these regulations to implement policy. The community is the affected group of humans that will interact, exhibit, and share in these new values that will be set in place. Lastly, the Illinois General Assembly has teamed with the state government to create these sets of provisions to improve the quality of healthcare.
