The geopolitical context refers to the political and economic structures that impact a community. Factors like government policies, funding availability, and access to healthcare resources can shape the health status of the population. Phenomenological context involves understanding the community’s unique experiences, values, and cultural beliefs. This influences health-seeking behaviors, acceptance of interventions, and the effectiveness of health promotion strategies. It is crucial for nurses to recognize and respect cultural differences to develop culturally sensitive interventions. The nursing process involves five stages: assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation. To identify health issues and create appropriate interventions depending on the case. Nonprofit organizations, local clinics, community centers, and faith-based groups can provide additional support, expertise, and funding. According to Child Welfare information gateway (2022), community needs assessment to assure the right resources for that community and build the best for the people who live in that community. Collaborating with these resources enhances the intervention’s reach, sustainability, and cultural relevance. A Christian worldview emphasizes the inherent value and dignity of every individual, as each person is seen as created in the image of God. In the context of an intervention, this perspective would lead the nurse to approach each community member with respect, compassion, and a commitment to holistic care. According to ANA ( 2016), Acknowledging the spiritual dimension of health, the nurse may incorporate spiritual support and resources aligned with the community’s Christian beliefs, if appropriate and desired by the individuals being served. This approach fosters an inclusive and person-centered intervention that upholds the inherent value and dignity of all community members, regardless of their health status or background. How is the geopolitical structures in your community?

Geopolitical place refers to the community boundaries, transport system, geographic features, climate, vegetation, animals, and settlements (Green, 2018). These factors affect community health in diverse ways. The demographics, diversity, ease of health access and resources, and remoteness of an area will determine the community’s health (Green, 2018). The transport infrastructure influences the remoteness of an area affecting how they receive medical resources, professionals, and access resources outside the geographical boundaries. According to Towne Jr. (2017), area-level features that may affect medical care access are geopolitical characteristics like Medicaid policies leading to forgone medical care.
A phenomenological place is a relational or psychological location, rather than a geographical one, that includes the history, culture, economics, education, spiritual values, and goals of the people who live there (Green, 2018). These factors are important determinants of community health because they identify health barriers as well as those that have a positive impact. These factors can assist a community health nurse in determining a phenomenological place’s health literacy, attitudes, and beliefs about health, as well as health gaps. A phenomenological place, according to Minority Nurse (2018), can help nurses assess human experiences and use the information to support populations in exercising control over their health and wellbeing.

The nursing process necessitates a careful examination of the population’s geopolitical and phenomenological factors. This assessment aids in the identification of factors or characteristics that may have an impact on the health of the population, both directly and indirectly. A nurse can use the same data to conduct phenomenological and ethnographic studies to better understand the health of a community or population. Demographic, geopolitical, and phenomenological factors can influence how health education and promotion are conducted, sensitize the need for specific health behaviors, and develop policies to address foregone medical care.

In your post you quoted Green (2018) ” The demographics, diversity, ease of health access and resources, and remoteness of an area will determine the community’s health”. Then you spoke about how remoteness affects medical resources for the community. This information is interesting to me and is a common problem that many poverty-stricken communities face. While doing research this week, I came across solutions regarding how the health care system and political leaders need to respond to the lack of health care amongst these communities. According to Persaud et. al (2018) “Promoting and achieving global health: Two things are essential if this is to succeed. One is that health-care systems need to be culturally sensitive and appropriate, and cultural relativism is considered and second, health, especially the mental health, needs to be a part of impact assessment of all policies.

patients and families view and behave in the health practice realm. The significant influence of these factors in health care delivery makes cultural information and cultural competence vital in patient care. The ANA (2015) outlines that nurses should embrace diversity and engage in a culturally congruent practice that will lead to meaningful outcomes. Cultural congruent practice refers to the application of evidence-based nursing that addresses a patient’s preferred values, beliefs, attitudes, norms, and behaviors. Cultural competence enables a nurse to provide this kind of care to diverse healthcare consumers. This practice promotes adequate access to quality care, leads to positive patient outcomes, and reduce health disparities.

Great post, geopolitical factors impact greatly on the mental health and wellbeing of a focus group, they experience survivor guilt, loss and grief. Examples of these geopolitical crisis include overpopulation, climate change which may result in destructive floods, wildfires, drought, earthquakes, hurricanes or tornado that leave behind a trail of destruction with loss of lives, leaving people homeless and hungry. Ongoing wars and conflicts leading to mass migration and increase in refugees and asylum seekers. It is of paramount importance that these populations receive counseling services and followups to ensure they are healthy not just physically but mentally as well. (Bhugra et al 2018).

Margaret,
Before this week, I had never heard the terms geopolitical or phenomenological. I learned about these terms through research and reading these posts. The SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats) analysis is one method of evaluation. The nurse categorizes the assessment findings for the population’s strengths, assets, and resources; notes the group’s weaknesses, challenges, limitations, and restrictions; and identifies both actual and potential diagnoses. SWOT analysis encourages more critical thinking about the population and the environment. This process takes into account stakeholders and spiritual resources (Grand Canyon University, 2018).
When I was younger and would take my children to the WIC clinic, they would check their blood for lead. The nurse explained to me that because where I live, my children were at high risk for lead poisoning. My neighborhood has mostly older homes and paint had lead in it many years ago, children would ingest paint chips and become ill.

A great overview, Kamara. I agree with your post and in addition, most people initially think of community in terms of geographical location. Another way of thinking about community is in terms of the members’ feeling of belonging or sense of membership, rather than geographical or political boundaries. Such a community is a phenomenological community, a relational rather than a spatial designation. A sense of place emerges through the members’ awareness of their experiences together (Grand Canyon University (Ed). (2018). This place is more abstract than a geopolitical place but is just as real to its members. People in a phenomenological community have a group perspective that differentiates them from other groups. A group consists of two or more people engaged in an interdependent relationship that includes repeated face-to-face communication. A group’s identity may be based on culture, beliefs, values, history, common interests, characteristics, or goals. Examples of phenomenological communities include populations of people with common interests such as a common religious conviction or professional or academic interest. As you have mentioned, the nursing process requires a rigorous assessment of the population’s geopolitical and phenomenological factors. An RN uses a systematic, dynamic, rather than a static way to collect and analyze data about a client, the first step in delivering nursing care. Assessment includes not only physiological data, but also psychological, sociocultural, spiritual, economic, and lifestyle factors as well. For example, a nurse’s assessment of a hospitalized patient in pain includes not only the physical causes and manifestations of pain, but the patient’s response an inability to get out of bed, refusal to eat, withdrawal from family members, anger directed at hospital staff, fear, or request for more pain medication.
