Middle- aged adults experience a variety of health concerns, varying from terminal illness to minor problems. Though our health is very important to us, the reality should be addressed with the individual early on in the diagnosis. Two health issues that can be improved with regular activity are hypertension and high cholesterol. According to Falkner, “Proper nutrition and physical activity are essential and lead to positive effects on overall health and help to prevent disease”…“ For instance, if the patient does not have access or financial means to join a gym, the nurse could help them develop a home workout regimen or a walking plan. The nurse should also provide proper nutrition recommendations such as those described on the Unites States Food and Drug Administration (USDA) website” (2018).

Hypertension is a pesky illness that may stay borderline for years, but the body can only tolerate the higher pressures within the blood vessels before it starts to damage vital organs and cause further health issues. The CDC conducted a study which showed “During 2015–2016, the prevalence of hypertension was 29.0% and increased with age: age group 18–39, 7.5%; 40–59, 33.2%; and 60 and over, 63.1%” (CDC, 2017). The fact is, these rates will continue to climb unless action is taken to reverse these illnesses. Increasing physical activity and exercise will allow these individuals to improve heart health, as well as become more aware of other health improvements. Along with changing your lifestyle, you should also encourage the individuals to monitor blood pressure daily, provide better dietary choices low in fats and salts, and also giving the individual the ability to still feel like they have options.

High Cholesterol is another illness that can be modified if lifestyle and dietary changes are made. According to the CDC, “Nearly 94 million U.S. adults age 20 or older have total cholesterol levels higher than 200 mg/dL. Twenty-eight million adults in the United States have total cholesterol levels higher than 240 mg/dL” (CDC, 2017). The goal for optimal cholesterol is anything less than 200 mg/dL. According to Heart, “Eat a heart-healthy diet. Focus on plant-based foods, including fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Limit saturated fats and trans fats. Monounsaturated fat, found in olive and canola oils, is a healthier option. Avocados, nuts and oily fish are other sources of healthy fat” (2021). They also suggest “Exercise regularly. With your doctor’s OK, work up to at least 30 minutes of moderate intensity exercise five times a week. Don’t smoke. If you smoke, find a way to quit” (Heart, 2021).

Title:  CHOOSE TWO AT-RISK HEALTH ISSUES THAT REGULAR PHYSICAL EXERCISE AND ACTIVITY CAN HELP PREVENT AND MANAGE NRS 434

According to Erikson’s stage of development, the middle-aged adult is in the generativity versus stagnation stage wherein roles within the society and contribution to the society are balanced with personal success ( Grand Canyon University, 2018). This equates to stress and less attention to health. Diabetes in the United States has increased to 100 million cases according to the CDC (CDC, 2017). The prevalence of diabetes among adults from 2018-2019 also depends on education level, with 13.4% has less than high school education, 9.2% with high school education, and 7.1% with higher than high school learning ( CDC, 2021). Diabetes also may go hand in hand with the other health risk issue of coronary heart disease for a middle-aged adult. Both these risk factors may be prevented or managed by an increase in physical exercise and a change in lifestyle (Folsom et. al, 2003).

The first measure to take as a nurse to assist patients with health promotion measures is to do a thorough assessment on the patient, including their willingness to learn and change their lifestyle. Then the patient can be enrolled and assisted in proper education using evidence-based materials, connecting them to the right health care team such as the cardiac rehab program that will tailor the exercise program and the lifestyle changes needed, for example, the target heart rate, the proper exercise activity to start the program then to increase the intensity (Healthwise, 2022). Ensuring the patient that the exercise program will be tailored to their initial capacity, and to enumerate the benefits they will get may get a better result

Exercise can contribute to improving many different health problems and eliminate health risks when implemented in a persons daily life. Exercising can improve the human beings state in a holistic manner of improving the mind, body, and soul. With healthcare knowing the improtance of the value of holistic care and the benefits of caring for someone on each level it is not question that exercise is of value in every ones lives. Prevention and management of our health issues is a key goal in patient care and exercising can help do so. According to the MedlinePlus, Benefits of Exercise, exercise can help you control your weight, lower your risk for some cancers, lower your risk of getting heart disease, strengthen your bones and muscles, improve sleep, improve sexual health, and increase your chances of living longer. (MedlinePlus,2023).Two health issues that regular physical exercise and activity can help prevent and manage are Obesity which leads to health problems such as hypertension and also type two diabetes. Improving the way in which one is active in their lives improve their quality of lives as well improving the way ones mind is able to function. In todays society there are many whom are dealing wth obesity. According to the National Institutes of Health Organization more than 2 in 5 Adults are obese. (NationalHealth,2023). The rates are climbing and the ages of who are obese are getting younger each generation. T This is a huge problem that can help be irradicated by the use of proper diet and exercise in our lives. Obesity causes a lot of other health risks for our general population many are dealing wth hypertension, type 2 diabetes, stroke, and other health issues leading to cardiovascular disesase.

Hypertension is a health condition that 45.4% of Adults are dealing with according to the CDC statistics. (CDC,2023). Hypertension is no longer just seen in older patients but in the younger generation as well. Busy lives are leading to unhealthier conditions. Families are eating out eating unhealthy food choices such as fast food restaurants on a routine basis. This is not a good health choice to be making and not only increases salt intake and leads to obesity and hypertension but also leads to Type 2 diabetes. About 1 in 10 Americans which s over 37 million have diabetes.(CDC,2023). Eating unhealthy, not exercising is a recipe for cardiovascular disease problems and there is a solution that can help which is implementing proper eating habits and exercise habits.

Both Obesity and hypertension effects how much activity tolerance one may have so assisting a patient in determining how much exercise is appropriate for this patient would need to be deemed on a very individual level. Speaking with the individual to set that individuals goals should be a priority. To set small acievable goals are a great motivational tool to use with patients. According to the nation Insititues of Health, “Hypertensive patients should perform at least 150-300 minutes per week of moderate-intensity or 75-150 minutes per week of vigorous-intesity aerobic exercises.”(NationHealth,2023). Type II Diabetes will require much of the same as the hypertensive patient both with change of diet and encouragement of implementing the minimum of 150 minutes of moderate- intense exercises. Its important to teach the patients that both cardio and muscle-strength exercises are important for the body to loose weight and restore proper health.

Measuring that patients BMI would be a great start to get a base line for the patient, and make setting goal focused not on appearance but rather what a health BMI for the patient would be. Speaking with the patient you can learn what activities they enjoy doing and encourage that which they like to do or have liked to participate in before in their life such as hikes, runs, sports, time at the gym, or maybe a bike at home they can ride. Depending on what the patients abilites and wants you can manage a healthy weight loss and exercise implementation for that patient.

For a beginner of someone implementing exercises I would say a 10- 15 minute walk each day both in the morning and in the evening. Walking with your children, grandchildren, friends, or taking the dogs out for a walk are all good ways to incorporate a walk into the day. Exercising can also include swimming which many enjoy to do and find it easier to commit to, so this would be a great option in the summer time. Simple life choices such as parking the car further back in the parking lots of where ever you go, taking the stairs rather than the elevators, pushing the shopping cart all the way back to the front of the store, are all ways that are simple choices but can lead to more steps in your day increasing amount of exercise. Finding a gym that a patient is able to feel comfortable in can be a very positive life altering experience. There are many important tools one can use such as the treadmill,(to walk, jog,or run) depending on which the patient is comfortable with, also there are weights at the gym that can help with the muscle strengthing performance. If one when to the gym and did 15 minutes cardio and 15 minutes weights that is 30 minutes a day for five days a week they would meet their minimum of 150 minutes of moderate-intense exercise that the Nation Health has recommended. That is a good base to start with to improve health conditions for the patient and 30 mintues is a very subtle change that is such a short time that even the busy patients can manage to fit in.
