Professional Practice Use: One or more professional practice uses of the theories/concepts presented in the articleThe concepts contained in the article by O’Toole & Modestino (2017) can be used in providing health education to the patients. Healthcare providers can utilize information about the pathophysiology of the syndrome to educate the affected populations about its potential causes. The concepts can also be used in nursing research. The article shows that inconclusive evidence on the pathophysiology of Alice in Wonderland Syndrome exists. As a result, it can be used in research to explore further the syndrome to inform nursing practice. Lastly, it can be used in health promotion. The population can be informed to avoid risk factors associated with the syndrome such as topiramate medications.

The authors used simple language that general population can easily understand
It provides insights into gaps in knowledge and practice to be explored in future research

Step 2: Summary of Analysis

The approach that was applied in the identification of the above peer-reviewed article entailed doing a search of literature in PubMEd database. The search entails the use of specific keywords that included Alice in Wonderland Syndrome, pathophysiology of Alice in Wonderland Syndrome and causes. The search yielded four articles. The above article was selected after inclusion criteria such as relevance, year of publication, and its focus of analysis were applied.

One of the strategies that I would use that I found effective in finding peer-reviewed research is developing inclusion and exclusion criteria. Inclusion and exclusion criteria help in filtering the sources. It also increases the accuracy of search results. The other strategy is the use of Boolean Operators. Boolean Operators such as and, or, and not increase the accuracy of search results (Dingwall & Staniland, 2020). I will use a number of resources in the future to find peer-reviewed research. One of them is professional databases. I will use databases such as EMBASE, CINAHL, and PubMed to access the resources that I need for research. I will also use the references used in articles to locate other articles of interest to my topic of research (Houser, 2021).

Overall, nurses should have knowledge in accessing peer-reviewed sources of evidence. Peer-reviewed sources of evidence provide highly accurate and reliable data to inform nursing practice. It is important that nurses identify different resources for use to inform their practice. Through it, they acquire competencies for supporting evidence-based practice in their institutions.

Nursing is one of the most intriguing professions in the health industry but students enrolling in the career are usually baffled by what they might expect when pursuing the course. Often, nursing students lack adequate information about the profession in their early instances of learning but as they progress in studies, they acquire additional information and guidance regarding the career (Roodbol & Peters, 2020). In order for nurses to successfully complete their program, they need academic and professional support. These provide avenue for professional interaction and networking to enhance knowledge sharing in the course of studies (Mesquita et al., 2017). As I transition to graduate students, I have also realized the benefits of academic and professional support as a way to optimize interactions for my future career as a family nurse practitioner. In this regard, this paper will help me organize my thoughts by enumerating academic and professional networks who will not only lay a foundation for my studies but also enhance my nursing care practice within a health setting.

Why I selected this individual and/or team and how they will support my success in the MSN program and as a practicing nurse:

Notes: Dr. Kuric prides on an experience of more than 35 years in nursing as well as an advanced practitioner for over 25 years. She has also been teaching specialties in family nurse practice, emergency nursing and gerontology nursing at Walden University. Dr. Kuric has been part of my academic journey while I pursued an associate degree in nursing (ADN) earlier back. Her instructional strategies are outstanding and therefore she is quite an inspiration in building my future career. She once counseled me about the ADN program especially when I struggled in attaining the recommended scores in the sub-module units and her amazing guidance motivated me not to quit the course. Other than her academic and counseling prowess, Dr. Kuric is well-versed with the academic structure of Walden University. I therefore look upon her for further advice on how nursing environment operates within the university and I will consult her more about existing nursing programs that I can participate in to build my future career in the course of studies (Ling & Casida, 2020). With her specialty in family nursing, I anticipate to garner more insights about the profession and build confidence by reading her published articles within the university library.

Why I selected this individual and/or team and how they will support my success in the MSN program and as a practicing nurse:

Notes: Achieving success in nursing requires team spirit among learners as they use the platform to discuss and share concepts in the course (Ryan, 2017). I purpose to team up with colleagues in the nursing school to optimize my understanding based on the knowledge shared by other students as they learn from me as well. We will work in group discussions in handling individual and group assignments as provided by course tutors. Besides, MSN colleagues will be vital in discussing issues and overcoming challenges arising in the course of my study (Comunale, Lerch & Reynolds, 2021). Notwithstanding, fellow course-mates will provide a support system of professional networking for future prospects and to enable us secure gainful employment upon completing MSN program. I therefore look forward to build a strong relationship with MSN colleagues in the Walden University.

Name: Tegist Ayalew, RN, MSN, FNP

Title: Staff Nurse

Organization: Hennepin Healthcare Clinic, Minneapolis

Academic or Professional: Professional

Why I selected this individual and/or team and how they will support my success in the MSN program and as a practicing nurse:

Notes: While enrolling for an MSN program, students need immense information about the profession in terms of workplace responsibilities and opportunities for future growth. The most people students can liaise with are those already in the profession practicing the role one is studying (Mesquita et al., 2017). In this regard, I find Dr. Ayalew very instrumental in matters research and information regarding my MSN program. Her broad experience in family nursing will be crucial to help me learn about matters happening in practice as well as the emerging issues in the specialty that one can build more knowledge on (Ling & Casida, 2020). Besides, I purpose to build professional network with her for future job prospects as a FNP upon graduating.

Name: Pratt Winterbottle, MSN, FNP

Title: Nursing Association (ANA) member

Organization: American Nursing Association (ANA)

Academic or Professional: Professional

Why I selected this individual and/or team and how they will support my success in the MSN program and as a practicing nurse:

Notes: Nursing is one of the health career readily regulated by professional bodies to ensure compliance with operational standards of care of practice. I have a conviction that joining these professional organizations, especially the American Nursing Association, will allow me to provide best care to patients in a diverse setting (Comunale, Lerch & Reynolds, 2021). However, these professional associations have rigid terms that potential members must adhere to before enrolling with the organizations. As a student pursuing MSN program, I need information about the professional and academic demands of ANA as I view it as one of the umbrella body upon which all nurses in America register with (Roodbol & Peters, 2020). I find Dr. Winterbottle the best person to consult as she is already registered and also work in the organization. I look forward to consult her on matters of registration and compliance in order to enhance my practice in the health industry.

Professional networking provides social linkages in which a nurse can use to improve academic knowledge and build a foundation for future career development. Building this network commences when one enrolls in a nursing program and also during professional practice as both avenues lay a foundation for social interactions. As I pursue MSN program in Walden University, I purpose to build both academic and professional networks by collaborating with members discussed above as well as improving interactions with other professionals in my area of study. I believe that their guidance will help me address challenges in my career as well as seek required support system that can optimize my future practice as a family nurse practitioner.

Module 2 | Part 2: Strategies to Promote Academic Integrity and Professional Ethics

I have analyzed the relationship between academic integrity and writing, as well as the relationship between professional practices and scholarly ethics. I have also identified strategies I intend to pursue to maintain integrity and ethics of my academic work while a student of the MSN program, as well as my professional work as a nurse throughout my career. The results of these efforts are shared below.

Directions: In the space below craft your analysis/writing sample, including Part 1 (The Connection Between Academic and Professional Integrity) and Part 2 (Strategies for Maintaining Integrity of Work).

Part 1: Writing Sample: The Connection Between Academic and Professional Integrity

In the space below write a 2- 3-paragraph analysis that includes the following:

  • Explanation for the relationship between academic integrity and writing
  • Explanation for the relationship between professional practices and scholarly ethics
  • Cite at least 2 resources that support your arguments, being sure to use proper APA formatting.
  • Use Grammarly and SafeAssign to improve the product.
  • Explain how Grammarly, Safe Assign, and paraphrasing contributes to academic integrity

Academic integrity involves fundamental values such as fairness, honesty, responsibility, and trust in writing. In essence, it involves moral and honest practices in any academic setting involving writing (Sefcik, Striepe & Yorke, 2019). Academic integrity and writing cannot be separated as they lay a foundation for professional ethics in literary work. Students, particularly those in tertiary institutions such as universities and writers have the mandate to acknowledge the ideas of others and appreciate the respective authors by quoting their names (Abbott & Nininger, 2021). In other words, academic writing relies on building information that other scholars have published. Academic integrity will therefore compel a student or a writer to provide credit to other authors by demonstrating honesty with information retrieved by published sources (Cronan et al., 2018). Academic works that lack integrity are considered plagiarized and these constitute an academic crime in the literary world.

Professional practices refer to a set of conducts and behavior that define a given profession with which people within the specialty must comply with (West, 2020). Scholarly ethics on the other hand relates to integrity and accuracy that are significant when developing a written publication for sale or general use. The relationship between professional practices and scholarly ethics is inseparable (Kadam, 2018). Often, professionalism is defined by ideals developed through evidence-based scholarly articles that can be used as a guide in decision-making. Scholarly ethics requires utmost integrity so that the published work does not confuse professionals during decision-making and practice (Sefcik, Striepe & Yorke, 2019). Besides, professional practices are confounded by multiple challenges which then requires scholars who can identify real problems and come up with solutions to address emerging issues in areas of expertise and this can only occur when scholarly materials are not corrupted.

Students and other writings are required to demonstrating honesty and integrity in the academic or literary work. The use of Grammarly, SafeAssign, and paraphrasing allows academic writers to proofread work to rectify anomalies in written work before submission (Cronan et al., 2018). Paraphrasing and SafeAssign serve a critical role in addressing plagiarism in academic writing. Paraphrasing ensures that information of another author is written in a different language instead of being copy and pasted from the original text. SafeAssign on the other hand is a software to detect plagiarized texts in a written material (Kadam, 2018). Apart from guiding in text formatting and grammar, grammarly also has a plagiarism checker embedded in its software that can quickly scan borrowed texts in written work. It is, therefore, necessary for one to use proper citation and paraphrase documents to ensure academic integrity in written work

PART 2: Strategies for Maintaining Integrity of Work

Expand on your thoughts from Part 1 by:

  • Identifying and describing strategies you intend to pursue to maintain integrity and ethics of your 1) academic work while a student of the MSN program, and 2) professional work as a nurse throughout your career. Include a review of resources and approaches you propose to use as a student and a professional.

Issues of misconduct not only affect students but also professionals in different cadres of specialty. As an MSN student, I intend to identify contextual factors that can place me in a precarious state of academic dishonesty in order to maintain integrity during learning (Abbott & Nininger, 2021). I will work to avoid any practice of academic dishonesty by evading all forms of false representation of academic data and cheating. Besides, I intend to establish a locus of control in learning by extracting factual and real studies as a way to elevate my level of originality in the learning process (Sefcik, Striepe & Yorke, 2019). However, when assigned tasks that involve academic writing, I will do my research extensively, paraphrase the work and acknowledge works written by authors through quoting their names in my texts. Notwithstanding, I will use SafeAssign and Grammarly to ensure that my written work does not have any similarities with the published work of other authors.

In my role as a professional nurse, I anticipate to develop a moral principle in my career by maintaining integrity and work ethics during practice. I will remain true to my call as a nurse by delivering services and going beyond the call of duty to provide the best care to patients (West, 2020). I will adhere to the rules and regulations of nursing practice to ensure that my profession provides a meaningful purpose to members of the society I serve. Based on this premise, I will be responsive to my actions towards patients to ensure that I do not violate their rights during care (Abbott & Nininger, 2021). Moreover, I intend to liaise with multidisciplinary teams in the facility I serve so that I gain further insights on nursing practice and to guide me in decision-making as I provide care services to patients with varied health needs.

Academic and professional integrity serve vital roles in nursing practice. Through academic integrity, students learn and develop the principle of honesty so that they develop necessary competency for future practice. Integrity acquired through learning builds confidence in nurses in adhering to the professional codes of practice as they provide service to patients. As such, integrity as a virtue should be instilled onto nurses during elementary learning so that they embrace it in their future practice to improve quality of life of patients.

As I began my search for a peer reviewed article, I found Walden University’s research database to be very easy to use. I did a dual search using CINAHL and MEDLINE that proved to be very useful. The article I chose was entitled A critical interpretive analysis of the intersection of domestic violence with parental issues of mental health and substance misuse. I found this article to be very interesting because it touched on many areas that interest me in the mental health field. The article looked at the relationship between children and families who have experienced domestic and family violence (DFV), parental issues relating to alcohol and other drugs (AOD), and mental health (MH). One thing I found very interesting was “the impact of domestic and family violence too easily disappears when other problems emerge.” (Isobe, Healey, & Humphreys, 2020) I found this information to be very surprising because I would never have thought DFV would be discounted when another issue came about. They also identified some weaknesses in practice and spoke about some strategies to improve outcomes. The study concluded that “until practices are developed in MH, AOD services to identify and respond to DFV-specifically fathers who use violence-and the intersection between DFV, AOD, and MH sectors is strengthened, the lives of women and children may not improve.” ( Isobe, Healey, & Humphreys, 2020)

Walden University. (n.d.). Evaluating Resources: Journals. Retrieved October 29, 2021, from

My approach to identify and analyze peer-reviewed research is based on critical reading as well as evaluation of articles to identify the best that is in line with my topic. Through intensive reading of materials from different library databases, I was able to classify these publications as either peer-reviewed or not and also identified their relevance for clinical research (Cooper et al., 2018). Notably, peer-reviewed articles are also checked in terms of the quality of the publication by analyzing accuracy and assessing validity of the research. For me to achieve this, I refined my search strategy by selecting relevant topic and ensured that the results in the manuscript were relevant to the present study by selecting the latest publication (Krishnamurthy & Wood, 2018).

I found data search skills and evaluation of types of resources in scholarly journals as two strategies that I would use in finding peer-reviewed articles. The first strategy enhances my ability to retrieve materials from a search database (Lefebvre et al., 2019). It is always a challenge for a majority of students to evaluate relevant materials for their studies but with the data search skills, one can categorize databases that are relevant to their area of research and select keywords to limit their searches. The second strategy on the other hand singles out articles that are peer-reviewed and published for use in scholarly journals (Cooper et al., 2018). These two strategies ensure that quality materials are selected so that I gain adequate knowledge for successful completion of my MSN program.

In order to find peer-reviewed resources in the future, I intend to use online library databases found at Walden University library and beyond. Database resources from an online library contain numerous peer-reviewed journals with special catalogs organized in an alphanumerical order from A to Z (Krishnamurthy & Wood, 2018). It then means that database search can be useful in locating published materials by selecting an alphabetical listing that coincides with the topic of research. The use of online library databases is also easy to navigate as one opts to find relevant information during studies (Tricco et al., 2018). As an MSN student, library databases will be instrumental in providing consistent information in a secure form as they can only be accessed at the Walden University library by students or staff who have valid passwords.

Academic and professional success requires one to delve into intensive research relevant to an area of study or expertise. However, since a lot of research is involved, one needs to identify a search strategy to retrieve peer-reviewed publications for studies. As discussed in the preceding texts, the selection of articles for research should be based on the use of online library databases that are easy to use and those that provide accurate information. The premise will guide in the selection of articles that provide information on evidence-based practice related to the adoption of a mathematical model that can be used to schedule shift hours for nurses.

The analysis of research articles and their application in academic success and professional development is critical for advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) specializing in mental health issues. Research analysis provides a platform for researchers to have an enhanced understanding of the different topics of interest to attain deliver quality patient care and attain better outcomes (Abiri et al., 2022). Obesity is a national public health issue and have significant effects on mental health. Imperatively, I have identified a topic of interest for further study. I have also researched and identified one peer-reviewed research article focused on the topic and identified a peer-reviewed research article on the effects of obesity on mental health and analyzed it. The purpose of this part of the academic plan paper is to present the results of these efforts.

Use of multilevel analyses enabled the researchers to leverage all accessible and available information from participants

Step 2: Summary of Analysis

The identification and analysis of peer-reviewed research article requires one to have an effective strategy and deploy relevant databases and search terminologies to get the relevant research sources. In this case, I began by looking at the relevant databases and journals as provided in the university library. These included National Library of Medicine’s PubMed, CINHAL complete and Web of Science. I also focused on articles concerned with adolescent’s mental health issues and obesity like the BMC Public Health. The next step was to narrow my research search results by using key terms and worlds like “obesity and mental health,” “mental health disorders associated with overweight,” “adolescents and mental health,” and effects of poor weight on mental health among teens.” I then determined the relevance of the information from the article through reading the abstract and full-text articles. I also ensured that the articles that I got are full-text articles to obtain all possible information, especially the limitations of the study. I then analyzed the article based on its relevance to the topic of interest. I also ensured that the articles were published in the last five years.

Having effective strategies is essential in research analysis. In this case, the two strategies that I used include getting journal articles published by well-known and respected organizations and researchers to attain their credibility and reliability. The second strategy was using the peer-review process that entails having the articles evaluated by other experts within the professional before their publication in the respective journals (Mei et al., 2020). For instance, ensuring that the articles are listed in an online database like PubMed which is run by the National Library of Medicine was a critical part of the strategies to get quality sources during the research process. I also used keywords and terms in the search to identify research articles and studies that had relevant information on the topic of interest.

The PubMed, especially its online database, is a great resource that I intend to use in getting peer-reviewed research study articles. Managed by the National Library of Medicine, this resource has many articles that are peer-reviewed and full-text to help one generate sufficient information on their research topic and interest. Getting peer-reviewed research on any topic on this database implores one to enter keywords related to the topic in the database and filter the results using the terms “peer-reviewed.”

Research analysis is a core aspect of getting resources that address topics of interest to researchers in any situation. In this case, the identified article shows a significant relationship between obesity and mental health disorders among adolescents. Imperatively, PMHNPs can leverage the resource to improve interventions aimed at addressing mental health issues among adolescents in their practice environment. The findings from this study are not only reliable but also valid and implore providers to address the issue in the most effective manner to reduce adverse effects associated with obesity in mental health.

The topic selected for this assignment is impacts of Anxiety and anxiety in patient management. Anxiety is a normal psychological response to stress or a dangerous situation. It is adaptive because it helps us to protect ourselves from harm (Musey et al., 2018). For example, if you see a bear in the woods, your anxiety will increase and this will help you to take action (e.g., run away). However, sometimes people experience chronic anxiety which is not helpful or adaptive. This can be due to genetics, early life experiences, or current life stresses (Banov et al., 2020). People with chronic anxiety may have difficulty controlling their worry and may feel constantly anxious, irritable, and tense. This can interfere with daily activities and relationships. There are many sources of information on anxiety and anxiety in patient management. Some useful sources of information include: -The American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5): This manual is used by mental health professionals to diagnose patients with mental disorders, including anxiety disorder. -The National Institute of Mental Health’s website: This website provides a wealth of information on mental health conditions, including anxiety disorder. -Anxiety and Depression Association of America’s website: This website offers support and resources for people with anxious or depressive feelings. -Books about anxiety: There are many helpful books about anxiety that can provide valuable insights and strategies for managing this condition. The purpose of week four assignment is to identify the topic of interest and research and identify one peer-reviewed research article focused on this topic.

Step 2: Summary of Analysis

The first step was to identify the peer-reviewed journals that were most relevant to the topic of research. Once a list of relevant journals was determined, I read the abstracts of all the published articles in order to get a sense of the current research landscape. After having a good understanding of the current research, I started digging a little deeper by reading the full-text articles; this was important since it led to the identification of accurate information possible and to determine relevancy in line with the topic. Additionally, accurate key phrases were applied in identifying the most relevant article from Google search. Some of the keywords used include, anxiety, stress management, stress and anxiety.

There are a variety of strategies used to find peer-reviewed research articles. One effective strategy was to search for journal databases that offer full-text access to research articles. Another strategy was to search Google Scholar, which offers a broad range of scholarly literature from a variety of disciplines. Both of these strategies can be usefully supplemented by searching for specific keywords or terms related to the topic of interest. Some of the keywords used include, anxiety, stress management, stress and anxiety.

One great resource that I intend to use for finding peer-reviewed research in future is the website of the National Library of Medicine, which is part of the United States National Institutes of Health (Suarez et al., 2019). This website indexes journals from around the world and makes abstracts and full-text articles available online for free. One can search for journal articles by topic or keyword, or browse by subject area. Another great resource for finding peer-reviewed research is PubMed, a search engine developed by the National Library of Medicine. PubMed searches Medline – an international database of medical journal citations – as well as other life science databases. It also provides links to full-text articles when they are available online.

Scholarly and Professional Writing Search

This is my first time exploring Walden University’s library resources, and I’m very impressed with the variety available for students. I’m sure that from now on I will be utilizing this library for my future writings. I chose to use ScienceDirect for the purpose of this post, but there are other great resources to choose from as well (Walden University Library, 2019). I searched for evidence-based and peer-reviewed nursing articles using the advanced search engine available and got several good articles. The one I chose was titled “Job satisfaction among nurse practitioners”.  The article was published in the Journal for Nurse Practitioners in 2005; so, a little outdated but I still thought it was a relevant and interesting read.

In fact, the article is so interesting that I would like to share the gist of it with my colleagues and fellow future nurse practitioners. According to the article, a sample study of nurse practitioners was selected to participate – most of these nurses were family nurse practitioners, but other nurse practitioners participated in the study as well. The sample group was given a series of surveys consisting of questions related to job, clinical, and personal factors. Other similar studies mentioned in the article referred to these factors as intrinsic vs extrinsic. Job and clinical are examples of extrinsic factors. Job factors were considered work-related: hours worked, vacation time, sick policies, and paid education. Clinical factors considered topics such as variety in patient age, diagnoses seen, amount of time spent with patients, and so on. Personal factors, which were considered intrinsic by the article, were represented by questions on demographic and quality of care given. At the end of study, the sample group was asked to rate the top 5 factors in order from what they considered to be most important to what they considered to be the least important (5 being most, 1 being least). Overall job satisfaction – reported as a percentage – was described as “extremely satisfied” at 85.8% (Miller et al., 2005). The selected sample group rated the quality of care they provided to their patients as the most important factor contributing to their job satisfaction. Other factors important to this group included higher recognition of their expertise and higher levels of respect from their peers and patients. It is great study for both new and experienced nurses as well as for employers. New nurse can gain valuable knowledge of what to look for when searching for a new job, while an experienced nurse stuck in a less-than-desired work environment can learn of potential options and can use that to negotiate with their employers. For the employers themselves, this study can help them find ways to enhance the job satisfaction for their current work base, which will lead to higher job retention.

I could tell that the tone of writing in this article was both professional and scholarly. The professional tone came through given that the individuals selected for study were professional nurse practitioners, and the questions asked of them by were based on their establish work experience. The scholarly writing tone came through in the fact that it was clear, concise, fact-stating, and remaining unbiased (Laureate, 2018).

I liked this article very much; it gave me guidelines of what to look for in my search for new employment after graduation. I would recommend using the Walden Library for future scholarly searches and writing since it is well organized and easy to access. It contains a large amount of evidence-based and peer-reviewed nursing articles and studies that will certainly come in handy for future writhing assignments. One of the biggest problems I have when searching for reference to use is trying to find something that interests me enough to write about. Searching through the Walden Library resources helped me find several articles that I was interested in reading – it was even hard to pick just one. I also must admit that before taking this course and reading through the library resources, I had trouble distinguishing between scholarly and professional writing. So far, this course and Walden Library resources has provided me with great resources explaining that distinguishment very well. I honestly believe that I’m developing a great foundation to becoming a better writer.

Thank you for the information you provided through your search for evidence-based research. I have heard of treatments involving platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and was very curious to look into your selected article’s findings and to see it well supported by the literature. Thank you for bringing light to an excellent treatment option. Have you heard of these therapies utilized in biological dentistry, reproductive medicine, or orthopedics? What cool stuff! I am six months out from a surgical tendon and ligament repair and considering such a treatment to help my healing process. In briefly reviewing some of the research, I found an abstract that reported the following: there are tendons in the body that respond well to PRP and tendons that do not show a beneficial improvement with PRP (Filardo et al., 2018).

Additionally, thank you for giving a review of primary and secondary sources. Were you able to find if this was an area you could specify filter-wise while working on any of the databases you utilized? I would imagine that what could be done is to find a database that allows you to filter results so that only primary sources are retrieved, like journal articles. One could also filter by type of study, specifically those that are published by those persons doing the research.

Embase is not a database that I have utilized before. In learning more about it, I found that it is the second most popular database after MEDLINE and, because of its features, is a potential “one-stop” search engine for medical research (Oliveira, 2021).

Additionally, you described searching with Boolean techniques when explaining how you found your research, and also as a response to my initial post. Thank you for a reminder and re-education on this important step to search information set-up. The following is what I was able to review. Utilizing Boolean operators while searching a database can be crucial to focusing on a topic and retrieving more accurate search topics (Adams, n.d.). There are ways to utilize parenthesis or nesting and operators such as: and, or, not, to help define a search. Using truncation (an asterisk) helps extend a database search and discover additional retrievals if your word may have different endings. I plan to become more familiar with these techniques as a strategy to improve my database searches.

Before starting this course, I reviewed several papers I wrote during my Bachelor’s program regarding evidence-based research. I feel that I have forgotten much of what I learned regarding research analysis. I was very grateful to be focusing on research analysis this week, as I feel that this understanding is essential when reviewing research and evaluating literature to be used as a resource.

My Goal and University Vision and Mission

Returning to school at this time is phenomenal because I celebrate my birthday with Walden. I do not believe it is a coincidence but a perfect order of divine interventions. Walden and I were birthed in the same year, and, amazingly, I can be here at this time, as Walden celebrates 50 years of empowering individuals for the greater good of their communities.  I have been a nurse for almost 17 years and have seen so much change from documentations to treatments.  I have seen so many good primary care doctors retire and the younger doctors mainly interested in the specialization portion of medicine.

My Professional goal was to end up in nursing administration.  Fortunately, my love for patient care did not wean but instead became stronger during the Covid-19 pandemic.  While working on my Master’s in Leadership and Management, I thought I would do a dual track and obtain my nurse practitioner certificate right after.  I lost my mother not long after graduation, and I did not desire to pursue that dream until now.

Incorporation of Social Change

I wanted to attend a school that will support my social change goals, and after a thorough search of several schools, Walden met that requirement.  I tried to bring reformation to health care in Africa, and Walden’s mission and vision statement tugged at my heartstring.  Before I enrolled, the enrollment specialist encouraged me to sign up with the International Organization of African Nurses (IOAN), and I am excited to be part of that organization.  The organization’s members are movers and shakers in the healthcare field, and I hope to make an impact.  The College of Nursing’s vision and mission will help me in this effort because, according to Walden University College of Nursing (2020), their vision for the graduate is to meet the needs of individuals locally and globally.  This vision will be possible because Walden University’s mission rigorously prepares its student to be culturally and contextually astute and become scholar-practitioner through critical thinking skills and the incorporation of Social Change.  According to Walden University (n.d), its resources will be  leveraged to serve external stakeholders and seek, network, and build partnerships with other organizations and communities.

The need for accommodating and providing a continuum of care for individuals with mental health issues is an ongoing challenge (Fjellfeldt, Hogstrom, Berglund-Snodgrass, & Markstrom, 2021). In the past individuals with a psychiatric illness were cared for in large asylum facilities. Since the deinstitutionalization of asylums at the end of the 20th century, the new model of care advocates for a psychiatric continuum of care in community-based locations. The article I selected is “Fringe or Not Fringe? Strategies for Localizing Supported Accommodation in a Post-Deinstitutionalize Era” (Fjellfeld et al., 2021). As a mental health nurse working in a new, large, mental health facility with multiple mental health programs under one roof I found this particular article very interesting.

The database I used to search for the article was Walden Library.  I entered “mental health” and “new facilities” in the search engine. I then refined my search to full text, peer-reviewed scholarly journals only and limited the publication date from 2019 to 2021. The database listed numerous scholarly journals all with full text or find at Walden link with full text (Walden University, n.d.). A difficulty I came across was wording the search terms correctly, I made three attempts with different wording until I found relevant articles. I believe this database would be very useful to my colleges as they can search current, accredited, mental health articles and information easily. While continuing my education I have always used online library resources. They are quick, accurate, easy research tools from the comfort of your own home.

The U.S. Military has great use for Nurse Practitioners. They are being used in every aspect of the military from hospitals to combat zones. Those skill sets are utilized in extraordinary circumstances. “Excellent patient outcomes in Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) and Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) are in part a testament to the patient care rendered by nurses throughout the theater.” (Lewis et al., 2012). This article is one of the very few that apply to currently active members that are Nurse practitioners that are peer-reviewed.

I used Google to find the article cited by searching for peer-reviewed articles on Nurse Practitioners in the military. I always believe that Google is a wonderful tool to have at hand but one has to ensure the information is correct by verifying the authenticity. I did this by going to the Walden Library and searching for the article itself instead of a general search. It provided me with the original journal article. I would recommend this to anyone who has a general idea of what you are looking for to help narrow your search. Just remember, trust but verify.

Choice of a Nursing Specialty Within the Program

When I finished my BSN, I knew I wanted to pursue my career further and become a Family Nurse Practitioner. In life we encounter forks in the road, and I had to put that off for a few years. I had no difficulties in what path I would pursue in my career. Where I did encounter difficulties and probably many adults face is the financial portion. I worried about how can I afford this; will I be able to work full time and go to school, what if I can’t pay for my classes? I just have to believe if there is a will there is a way and I will face those questions as I go. I have faith that everything will work out.

Walden was an easy choice for me, “Their vision: to empower students to make a difference by confronting those challenges where they live, in their professions, and on a global scale.” (Walden, 2022). Those words spoke to me and when I filled out the papers to attend Walden University, I made a choice that would help me reach my dream and nothing was going to stand in my way. I wish I had the words to explain how every day that I log in and complete an assignment is like a warm bright light that fills my entire being with happiness. There is nothing I want more than to care for patients, my patients, those who place faith in me drives me to be the best Family Nurse Practitioner in the community. My goal is to serve the under privileged and provide them with the care that every human being deserves.

Professional Organization

It is important to belong to a professional organization, it helps you connect with people, to network and to keep up with what is going on in regard to current legislation. I chose American Association of Nurse Practitioners because of what they believe in “You believe in the importance of patient-centered health care. You believe that building relationships with your patients, learning their history and understanding their daily routines leads to better individual outcomes and healthier communities.” (AANP, 2023). Those are all the things that I feel will make for a great professional patient relationship and provide for my community.

I plan on joining AANP under their student access membership that only costs $55.00. I feel it will help provide additional resources though my education and beyond. Plus, it has access to free journals, and we all know we need those.
