I have been in nursing for 12 years, with most of those years in rural emergency medicine. In this field, I have seen first-hand the adverse effects of limited primary care in rural low-income areas. My professional goal is to become a full-time family nurse practitioner and serve the rural low-income community where I live. Thus, my academic goal is to obtain my Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) with Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) specialization. Walden’s vision, mission, goals, and social change aligned with my professional goal to provide positive change in the world by equipping me with the resources and knowledge to transform me into a scholar-practitioner at the highest level.Walden University College of Nursing’s mission statement is why I am confident that Walden is the right fit for my professional and academic goals. According to the Walden University College of Nursing, its mission is to dedicate excellence to nursing education. It provides programs to transform diverse nursing professionals into champions of change who will improve health outcomes and advance health equity (Walden University, 2022, Vision and Mission section, para. 12). This statement matches my professional and academic goals.

Walden MSN program outcomes and perspective provide critical standards that will help me fulfill my professional and academic goals. Outcomes one, three, five, and seven are key to my professional goal to provide primary care services to rural low-income areas by offering high-quality healthcare that delivers positive social change. For my academic goal, outcomes two, four, and six will give me a solid foundation to be a scholar-practitioner through research, effective communication, and ongoing commitment to professional development and value of nursing theories and ethical principles (Walden University, 2022, Master of Science in Nursing section, para. 2).
Networking
Networking is vital because it builds trusting relationships and connections that will help me professionally and academically. Networking is necessary to succeed in today’s job market, especially for career advancement in the nursing field. US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports that 70% of all jobs are found through networking (Schmidt, n.d.). According to Consumer News and Business Channel, 70% of all jobs are not published on publicly available job search sites. These statistics show that networking will be critical in gaining employment and accomplishing my professional goal of becoming a full-time family nurse practitioner (Fisher, 2019). Not only is networking necessary for employment, but it also is essential academically. Networking with help me reach my goal of graduating with my MSN- FNP by offering support and resources such as my student advisor, instructors, preceptors, classmates, and the writing center. I have already started using my networking skills to secure preceptors for my practicum portions of this program. And I will continue to use my networking skills in my clinical portion to develop a robust and trustworthy relationship with my preceptors and their faculties. As described above, networking is a primary asset for me, both professionally and academically, that I will use throughout my career and life to expand my career opportunities, gain knowledge, and develop and sustain long-term connections.

My name is Lisa and I am returning to Walden to continue the life-long learning that comes with being a nurse. I graduated with my BSN in 2018 and took several years to consider where I would see myself in nursing down the road. My position with my employer has evolved several times over the years and I have truly come to appreciate the many avenues nursing can take. So now here in the fall of 2021, I find myself returning to the classroom as an example to my children and to continue my professional growth as a nurse in hopes to combat stigma and societal intolerance of behavioral health disorders across the life-span. I am not sure exactly where I will find myself after completing this degree, however since COVID-19, I have not been able to overlook the emotional and mental impacts on my friends, family, colleagues and patients. This has helped me to recognize that there is so much to be done as a healthcare professional and to help the greater good.
As I read the vision, mission and goals statement provided by the College of Nursing at Walden (Walden University, 2021c), a particular segment of the vision “will transform the provision of nursing services along the continuum of care and across the human life span” resonated with me as this a core value to my own personal vision and path. At the University level, the vision statement reflects on the need for immediate action to address societal needs to support the greater good (Walden, 2021a), creating the foundation for the nursing program to engage with societal improvement from the healthcare perspective. Walden’s mission and goals statements reference the need for critical thinking and professional excellence in order to impact positive social change (Walden, 2021a) which supports the vision of the University into a reality by creating the abstract thought (vision) and developing the processes for execution (mission and goals). These statements as well as the values and social change initiatives align with my own moral compass and professional aspiration to improve behavioral health in society.
The University Learning Outcomes (Walden, 2021c) relate to my professional and academic goals in near perfect alignment as demonstrated in the first and second statements which references using knowledge to facilitate positive social change in all areas of practice. The MSN Learning Outcomes relate to my professional as well as academic goals as they highlight the need for implementation of specialist nursing roles to “promote quality improvement of patient-centered care in accordance with professional practice standards that transform health outcomes for diverse populations.” (Walden, 2021b) which supports my aspiration to become an advanced practice clinician through working at the top of my license and continuing to grow in my education.
In order to be successful in this journey, networking will play an essential role. Having a limited psyciatric specialty in my professional background, I will need to utilize other methods and resources to connect with psyciatric professionals in order to complete my future clinical rotations, identify patient populations at highest risks as well as the underserved populations. I plan on using social media and professional websites and organizations to connect with other professionals during this time.

Professional networking opportunities emphasize development of relationships and interactions among nurse practitioners and scholars. I have been a registered nurse (RN) with a BSN and my intent is to specialize as a psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner. Having a family and trying to advance one’s education can be complex but I believe that my resolve to go back to school is critical in changing my career advancement and attaining requisite qualifications to improve the quality of care outcomes. My goal is to specialize in psychiatric mental health as nurse practitioner to help individuals, households, and communities as well as the health system deal with the opioid epidemic and associated mental health issues. Through this, I can bring social change to families and patients. After reflection on furthering my education in nursing, I realized that getting a master’s degree as a psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner (PMHNP) will offer the education, knowledge and skills that I require to serve the population (ANCC, n.d). Therefore, my academic and professional goals entail getting a master’s degree and probably getting a terminal degree like Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) to position myself as a psychiatric-mental nurse practitioner who can practice independently. Through the incorporation of personal and professional values like compassion, empath, integrity and hard work, I will offer patient-centered care for better outcomes.
Getting the right school is essential to meet my professional goals. The Walden University’s School of Nursing (SON) (n.d) vision and mission statement inspires me to understand that I can attain these goals. The school’s vision is having a unique learning community where knowledge is considered valuable when it allows graduates to develop solutions to critical society problems to advance the greater global good. As I become a scholar-practitioner, it implies that I should show more dedication and commitment because of the challenges of the combination. Networking is important as it allows one to interact with goals, share best practices in care, and get the motivation and inspiration to pursue professional and career development paths. As a nurse for 27 years, my professional life has been a journey from physical, psychological and spiritual aspects of dealing with the realities of life. I’ve learned and never forget that I deal with a human being who has needs that must be met. This time, my goal is to advance my career to the next level and broaden my knowledge. Choosing Walden University as an online school to cater my needs in fostering my education had been one of the best options that I ever made. Walden University’s vision, mission and goals to prepare scholarly practitioners through education (Walden University, n.d.) will serve as my inspiration to secure the best foundation in helping me accomplish the agenda of getting through the course of Master’s of Science in Nursing with concentration in Adult Gerontology Primary Care.

Elizabeth, thanks for your post about your goals and Walden’s mission. It is nice to hear that you were finally able to find your passion in nursing and realize that you wanted to pursue a higher degree. As we go along in our nursing career, we go from being young, newbies to learning so much in our experience. We become “seasoned” as they like to say and either we stay working each day as we are, or we go on to pursue a higher degree. There is nothing wrong with each path, but it must be something we are passionate about. As Schmidt (2021) states, being a part of an organization that is supportive and has the same vision is key in becoming a part of a great networking system that will guide us along the path to success. Engaging in support groups and networking systems even on social media outlets allows us to express ourselves, seek help, guidance and even a mentor. Sometimes we come across those individuals that would like to help us along our journey to success. Walden University (2021) that is strives to help create providers that will go out into the community and create social changes. This is an excellent vision and mission with all the changes we are experiencing in the world, we also experience changes in practices. When we have a good foundation and students then we can go out to be successful and well-rounded providers.
I have always been interested in behavioral health. My career as a nurse has been mainly in the acute care settings, so my interaction with mental health patients has been minimal to what patients come into the intensive care unit. I feel like the mental health community is very underserved, and it makes me happy that many nurses are going toward the goal of PMHNP. My goal is to become a Family Nurse Practitioner. Even though we have different end goals for our careers, we share the same goal to positively impact our patients’ lives. I live in Wichita, KS, and there is an obvious need for increased help for the mental health population. Is there a lot of homeless present around where you live? I remember working in the Emergency Department as a nursing student, and we would get numerous homeless people during our shift that were physically stable. For discharge, we would give them cab vouchers and a sandwich and send them off because we thought that was why they probably came in. I don’t think we always gave them the help they might have needed. After reading an article, it stated, “about 25% of homeless suffer from serious mental illness, compared with 4.2% of the general population” (Baker et al., 2017). That amount is shocking and makes me realize that, as a nurse, we should have collaborated better with the attending physician to help support these patients. It is displayed that interprofessional collaboration assists healthcare providers in managing complex and chronic diseases (Morgan et al., 2020). These are all thoughts that I want to incorporate into my practice and that will help with positive social changes.

The same year that I was born. We share the same birth year. I feel like I am working together with “My Twin”. If Walden has been this long in the field, it has a wealth of experience. Another reason I think Walden is the best school to achieve my goals is high standards. My guarantor said that “Walden is very serious”. I need a school that is serious in academics to help me achieve my goals. Walden University also offers the flexibility of work and study. As a bedside nurse, there are so many things about patient care that need to be improved upon to achieve better patient outcome. When people bring their loved ones to the hospital, they trust the nurse to take care of their loved ones whether they are present or not. When I started my practice in America, I came to realize that paying attention to patients’ ‘Activities of daily living” (eating, drinking, oral care, bathing) are very important to recovery and shortening the length of hospital stay. Even though the Nurse has assistants that help to do those things, it is the responsibility of the nurse to supervise and make sure they are done. In my health facility in Nigeria, nurses do these things for patients. We did not have assistants when I worked in Nigeria. I took it for granted. When I came to America and observed that assistants help to perform those activities, I observed that supervision was needed on the part of the nurses to make sure patients received the care they needed. I brought this to the attention of my preceptor and the unit manager but my colleagues saw me as adding to the job stress. With higher education and research, we can use data to show how important these things are in saving the lives of the patients that are entrusted into our care. By so doing, we help to effect positive change and transform society.
Walden Vision looks at the 21st century learning where knowledge is judged worthy to the degree that it can be applied to solution of societal challenges thereby advancing the greater global good. In line with this vision, the College of Nursing envisions nursing services along the continuum of care and across the human life span to meet the needs of individuals, local, and global communities. Walden prepares students to have degrees they can defend and apply to the solution of human problems. The college of Nursing Vision prepares nurses for the challenges of taking care of the Human society from the” Cradle to the Grave”. All the information fit my own goals. In this journey, I would need academic and professional individuals and teams to achieve my goals.
Academic support will come from my Progress coach, Counselor, Teachers, colleagues and other individuals that I will come to know as I continue in my academic journey. Professional support will come from my colleagues at work, the preceptors that I will be working with during clinical experience and other professionals that I will meet along the way. This brings my attention to the importance of networking.
IMPORTANCE OF NETWORKING.
Networking is the action or process of interacting with others to exchange information and develop professional or social contents (google.com). Networking allows an individual to get in contact with others who can help the person to achieve goals. No one individual knows everything. We tap from others’ resources and knowledge to achieve higher goals. Some networking tips are the use of social media, face book, becoming an influencer, volunteering (Wofford P., 2018). Networking will help me to achieve academic and professional goals because there are things that I will learn and the resources that I will use that will come from other people.
