System Development Life Cycle implementation stages include planning, analysis, design, implementation, and maintenance. Nurses play a significant role in this implementation process. As such, involving them in every stage ensures that the Health Information System meets the needs of the healthcare institution (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2023). For instance, during planning, nurses can advise the healthcare institution on the best HIT in the market. This is because nurses understand clinical workflow and can provide crucial information about the various features of the HIT system. Failure to include nurses in the planning process may contribute to selecting an inefficient HIT system.

Nurses’ input is also needed in the analysis stage. Nurses can highlight areas that may benefit from implementing a HIT system. They may also identify the needs of the nursing staff and factors contributing to inefficiency in clinical processes (Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, n.d.a). In the same breath, nurses can be part of the HIT design team to ensure that the new system meets the needs of the clinical flow. For instance, they can suggest the best user interface for the system. They can also provide information on the navigation and information presentation of the system. Notably, nurses can be part of the maintenance team to help resolve emerging issues when using the HIT system (Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, n.d.b). Moreover, nurses can update the maintenance team on problematic areas needing improvement. Without the nurses’ input, the maintenance team may miss out on crucial areas that may help enhance the system’s inefficiency.

As a practicing nurse, I have been selected to help with suggestions on an essential admission documentation checklist that will help nurses improve on getting detailed information on patients’ belongings during admission. My recommendations were informed by patients’ and other nurses’ feedback on clinical processes. My input played a significant role in the decision-making process. Loss of patient belonging is an essential issue at my workplace. Patients report missing belongings not initially reported during admission or transfer from one unit to another, which the organization must refund. In the media introduction to this module, it was suggested that you as a nurse have an important role in the Systems Development Life Cycle (SDLC). With a focus on patient care and outcomes, nurses may not always see themselves as contributors to the development of new systems. However, as you may have observed in your own experience, exclusion of nurse contributions when implementing systems can have dire consequences.

In this Discussion, you will consider the role you might play in systems development and the ramifications of not being an active participant in systems development.

To Prepare:

  • Review the steps of the Systems Development Life Cycle (SDLC) as presented in the Resources.
  • Reflect on your own healthcare organization and consider any steps your healthcare organization goes through when purchasing and implementing a new health information technology system.
  • Consider what a nurse might contribute to decisions made at each stage of the SDLC when planning for new health information technology.

Post a description of what you believe to be the consequences of a healthcare organization not involving nurses in each stage of the SDLC when purchasing and implementing a new health information technology system. The systems development life cycle (SDLC) is a conceptual model employed in project management. It outlines the various steps needed to develop a project from conception to the operation stage and maintain it. SDLC also contains policies and procedures for developing or changing systems throughout their project’s phases (Kyeremeh, 2019). The purpose of this paper is to explain a graduate nurse’s role in the implementation team for a health information technology.

Planning and Requirements Definition

The stage involves defining the problem and scope of the existing health IT systems and outlining the objectives for the proposed new IT system. The graduate nurse’s role in this stage will include taking a general look at the new health IT and helping the team determine its objectives (Kyeremeh, 2019). The nurse will assess the feasibility of the IT system and participate in developing the schedule for its implementation. Analysis

The team will also create a system design document for subsequent phases. The nurse will create a training plan that will be used to train healthcare providers in the organization on how to use the new health IT system. Implementation

The implementation team will be tasked with incorporating the new health IT system into the organization’s workflow processes and putting it into action (Kramer, 2018). Post-implementation support
