NURS 6003 Part 2 Strategies to Promote Academic Integrity and Professional Ethics

NURS 6003 Part 2 Strategies to Promote Academic Integrity and Professional Ethics

PART 2: Strategies for Maintaining Integrity of Work

Maintaining integrity and ethics in the educational process requires the application of different strategies. Integrity and ethical practices are essential parts of professionalism. In the educational processes, learners have to adhere to the ethical practices to enhance their integrity, not only in the educational programs, but also in the future work process. Academic integrity refers to the commitment to honesty and moral behaviors in the academic practices. In the writing process, it is necessary to provide credit the work of other people whenever their thoughts or works are used in the writing process. In other words, it is necessary to acknowledge other people’s ideas when they are used in the writing process. Academic integrity is relevant at the university level as it relates to giving credit to other people of professionals when applying their ideas. From the ideas given in part one, to maintain high level of integrity and ethics, there is always the need to adhere to the originality of the work. In other words, there is the need to become creative in the writing process to avoid copying other people’s ideas without acknowledging them.

NURS 6003 Part 2 Strategies to Promote Academic Integrity and Professional Ethics

To maintain integrity and ethics in the writing process, I would ensure that the expectations of the work are well communicated including the citations and other forms of information required to ensure integrity and ethical practices. Producing original work free from plagiarism and grammatical mistakes in the MSN program requires elaborate planning since procrastination and lack of enough time often lead to the temptation to engage in cheating. Therefore, planning is critical in ensuring the production of original work that is free from plagiarism. Another strategy that I would employ in the MSN program is to maintain integrity and ethics in the scholarly work is the involvement of the smart decision such as engaging in doing personal work, diligently and persistently studying for examinations, and preparing effectively before engaging in writing personal essays. As a professional nurse, throughout my career, I intend to embrace research and to maintain ethical practices to ensure integrity in the operational processes. As a student I intend to use Grammarly, plagiarism checker, as well as credible sources of information. The above resources will enhance the originality of my work ensuring the integrity in academic processes. As a professional, I intend to adhere to the professional practices; I also intend to employ the required ethical standard to ensure effective treatment outcome.

Part 2, Section 1: Writing Sample: The Connection Between Academic and Professional Integrity

Using the Academic and Professional Success Development Template you began in Module 1, write a 2- to 3-paragraph analysis that includes the following:

Relationship Between Academic Integrity and Writing

Academic integrity entails fundamental values that include honesty, responsibility and accountability, and trust in producing scholarly work. Nurses taking the MSN program write numerous assignment, research papers and articles on different subjects, and this involves reading works and publications by different authors. Imperatively, it is essential to maintain academic integrity by having proper citations, avoiding plagiarism and any form of academic malpractices that demonstrate lack of ethics and represents academic dishonesty. Students in MSN program must acknowledge ideas and concepts developed by others and appreciate them by quoting their works and names (Fatemi & Saito, 2020). Academic integrity builds on information that others have published through research and compels students and even writers to offer credit to others as a means of demonstrating honesty.

  • Explanation for the relationship between professional practices and scholarly ethics
  • Cite at least two resources that support your arguments, being sure to use proper APA formatting.
  • Use Grammarly and SafeAssign to improve the product.
  • Explain how Grammarly, Safe Assign, and paraphrasing contributes to academic integrity.

Part 2, Section 2: Strategies for Maintaining Integrity of Work

Expand on your thoughts from Section 1 by identifying and describing strategies you intend to pursue to maintain integrity and ethics of your:

  1. academic work as a student of the MSN program and
  2. professional work as a nurse throughout your career. Include a review of resources and approaches you propose to use as a student and a professional.

Note: Add your work for this Assignment to the original document you began in the Module 1 Assignment, which was built from the Academic Success and Professional Development Plan Template.

PART 2: Strategies for Maintaining Integrity of Work

One of the strategies that I will embrace to promote integrity and ethics in my academic work as a student of the MSN program is ensuring originality of my academic work. MSN students are expected to produce original work in undertaking their assignments and projects. They achieve originality by acknowledging the sources of information that they use in undertaking their assignments and projects (Pandit & Gite, 2020). Students also check the originality of their work using databases such as Turnitin to ensure that it is not plagiarized. Through it, academic integrity is upheld.

The other strategy that I will adopt to ensure integrity and ethics in my academic work as a student of the MSN program is reading and understanding all the course and syllabus requirements. I will strive to understand the accepted level of academic performance that is required of the MSN students. I will also strive to achieve to the best level of academic standards that are stated in the institution (Bultas et al., 2017). I will also ensure that I seek assistance from my course mates and instructors on the issues that I do not understand, as it pertains coursework and syllabus of the MSN program.

I will also adopt a number of strategies to ensure integrity and ethics in my professional life. One of the strategies that I will adopt is ensuring professionalism in patient care and working with other healthcare professionals. I will ensure that I demonstrate ethical behaviors such as respect, trust and honesty in working with patients and healthcare providers from different backgrounds. I will also ensure advocate the rights of the vulnerable in my profession. The second strategy that I will employ to ensure integrity and ethics as a professional nurse is abiding with the institutional policies and regulations. Health organizations have rules, policies, and regulations that guide the behavior of the employees. Healthcare providers are expected to abide with the rules as a way of promoting safety, efficiency, and quality in patient care (Erikson & Davies, 2017). Therefore, I will behave in accordance with the developed rules and regulations as a way of promoting professionalism, ethics, and integrity in my practice.

The last strategy that I will adopt to ensure integrity and ethics in my professional life is utilizing best practices in decision-making. I will ensure that I utilize sources of evidence-based data to make sound and informed decisions on issues related to patient care. Evidence-based decision-making is important in practice, as it promotes safety, quality and efficiency in patient care. It also eliminates ethical issues in practice (Erikson & Davies, 2017). Therefore, I will work in collaboration with the other healthcare providers and patients to explore the ways in which evidence-based care and solutions can be delivered.

Overall, integrity and ethics are important for MSN students and MSN nurses. MSN students and nurses can utilize a number of tools to ensure integrity in their academics and professional lives. The tools include promoting academic honesty, understanding academic roles and requirements, and demonstrating professionalism as nurses working with patients and healthcare providers from diverse backgrounds. Therefore, MSN students and nurses should play an active role in the exploration of the effective strategies for promoting ethics and integrity in their lives.

Quiz: APA Style and Format

As a nurse embarking on an advanced degree, you are developing the characteristics of a scholar-practitioner, which include strong communication skills. Writing in a scholarly manner involves supporting your thoughts with evidence from the literature and appropriately using APA formatting.

One of the challenges of scholarly writing is paraphrasing the thoughts of others in your work. Paraphrasing, and correctly citing the original author for his or her ideas, allows you to take the ideas of others, summarize them, and incorporate them into your own writing. When summarizing the ideas of others, it is important to avoid plagiarizing (i.e., copying the words and ideas of others as though they were your own). In addition to expanding your knowledge of APA Style, this modules’ Learning Resources help you distinguish between paraphrasing and plagiarizing.

This Quiz will help you determine how your understanding of these concepts and preparedness to reflect them in your work. The questions presented on the Quiz are derived from the Resources related to APA writing standards, plagiarism, and academic integrity.

Part 1: Writing Sample: The Connection Between Academic and Professional Integrity

Using the Academic and Professional Success Development Template you began, write a 2-3 paragraph analysis that includes the following:

· Explanation for the relationship between academic integrity and writing.

· Explanation for the relationship between professional practices and scholarly ethics.

· Cite at least 2 resources that support your arguments, being sure to use proper APA formatting.

Week 2 | Part 2: Academic Resources and Strategies

(YOU WILL COMPLETE THIS SECTION DURING WEEK 2)

I have identified the following academic resources and/or strategies that can be applied to success in the nursing practice in general or my specialty in particular.

Directions: In the space below Identify and describe at least three academic resources or strategies that can be applied to the MSN program, and at least three professional resources that can be applied to success in the nursing practice in general or your specialty in particular. For each, explain how you intend to use these resources, and how they might benefit you academically and professionally.

Academic Resource/Strategy 1

Within my graduate education, I will utilize my course instructors to assist with my academic success. Collaborating with my instructors will promote positive and encouraging learning environments. I will contact my Instructors when I need clarity, feedback and support on assignments. In the past, my instructors have been helpful when communicating with them, giving critical and necessary feedback on assignments, as well as, encouraging and supporting me on my journey of academic excellence. Walden’s instructors are experts in their specialties; therefore, I believe they can be great resources and guides for me going forward.

Academic Resource/Strategy 2

When talking with my assigned Walden University student success advisor for the first time, he assured me he will assist me throughout my academic journey as a Walden University graduate nursing student. The Student Success Advisor provided me with the program of study plan form. I will utilize this study plan as a tool to guide me through the required courses that are needed to take in MSN program. My Student Success Advisor can connect me with necessary resources such as program policies, academic resources and peer support networking groups. My Student Success Advisor and I can schedule telephone check-in sessions often to discuss my progression, concerns and next academic steps. I believe that my Student Success Advisor and I will build a partnership that will benefit my success in Walden University MSN program.

Academic Resource/Strategy 3

Throughout my educational pursuit, I have never really liked writing scholarly papers. I do realize as a graduate student, writing papers in scholarly form is a requirement and therefore is necessary to convey important information regarding topics. As I progress through the MSN program, I plan to utilize the Walden University Writing Center student resource for assistance if uncertainty arises due to APA style formatting or to get feedback regarding the flow or content of the paper. APA style can be challenging, however; I believe this can be a tremendously beneficial resource for assistance in discussions, APA, and scholarly writing assignments.

Professional Resource/Strategy 1

I plan to join professional nursing organizations such as the American Psychiatric Nursing Association. I want to align with professional organizations that are dedicated to the growing field of nursing and especially those that are focused on psychiatric/mental health nursing. Collaborating with peers in my specialty will allow me the opportunity to access supplemental educational, career and research information. My goal is to network with experts in this specialty to learn from others, gain skills and meaningful relationships. I am currently evaluating the differences between professional organizations as this will be a future portion of the NURS 6002 assignment as well benefit me after graduation.

Professional Resource/Strategy 2

My colleagues are great resources and have many years of experience in the field of nursing, as well as, mental health and behavioral health nursing. They have always been great resources when dealing with on-the-job issues. My chosen resources are great in supporting and encouraging me as I pursue this graduate degree. I can request feedback from my colleagues for certain assignments too. They can share valuable knowledge I may need while on this academic journey. They may also be able to provide adequate suggestions for appropriate practicum sites since some of them have pursued their MSN degrees previously.

Professional Resource/Strategy 3

I have considered requesting a personal mentor in my specialty to provide guidance that will be beneficial to my academic and career successes. I plan to build partnerships and positive relationships with each of my preceptors, so that I may gain the necessary skills and influential connections. Collaborating with these individuals will provide me with the necessary skills, tools and resources for my academic and professional advancements. These relationships will also allow me important networking opportunities, access to continuing education and vital career experiences.

ADDITIONAL RESOURCES/STRATEGIES

The “Additional Resources/Strategies” is an optional section in Week 2 that you may complete if you have additional Academic or Professional resources you wish to add.

Part 1: Writing Sample: The Connection Between Academic and Professional Integrity

Academic integrity involves demonstrating a commitment to and honest and moral behavior in academic work. It is mostly related to academic writing at the university level since it entails giving credit to other authors’ work when you use their research work or ideas in writing (Newman, 2020). Academic integrity places an obligation to the student to acknowledge other authors’ contributions. Consequently, academic writers are obliged to acknowledge every source that they have used when writing research papers and essays. Failure to acknowledge others’ work is referred to as plagiarism (Newman, 2020). Furthermore, scholars should apply academic integrity by writing using their own words and ensuring that they do not accidentally misinform readers that the ideas expressed were theirs. Integrity should be applied by the writer understanding and rephrasing the text in their own words but still giving credit to the owner of the ideas.

Professional practices refer to specific behaviors that a particular profession considers appropriate for its members. The behaviors mainly consist of treating colleagues with respect and decorum despite professional and personal differences, mentoring incoming professionals, and serving others (Poorchangizi et al., 2019). Scholarly ethics refer to the entire array of explicit and implicit professional standards and characteristics that define an ethical, honest scholar. A scholar exhibits scholarly ethics by fulfilling the implicit and explicit professional expectations and implementing the practices set by their profession (Stander, 2020). They should also ensure that their professional behaviors and work match the ethical expectations considered crucial in their profession.

Grammarly promotes academic integrity through its plagiarism checker feature, which scans one’s essay or research work for borrowed texts. The feature enables the scholar to identify parts of the essay that have been plagiarized by underlining exact plagiarized texts and their origin (Soni, 2018). SafeAssign promotes academic integrity by checking and preventing plagiarism of texts. It provides scholars with opportunities to insert correct sources instead of just paraphrasing (Soni, 2018). The SafeAssign tool compares the student essay or work against various databases to detect overlapping areas between their essay and existing texts. In addition, paraphrasing promotes academic integrity by having the student write their interpretation of another author’s ideas (Stander, 2020). It is an efficient strategy to restate, compress, and explain another person’s ideas while at the same time ensuring credibility to one’s argument and analysis.

PART 2: Strategies for Maintaining Integrity of Work

Academic integrity at Walden University is considered important to develop students’ intellectual development. As an MSN student, I purpose to maintain the integrity and ethics of my academic work by avoiding incidences of cheating, plagiarism, providing false information, copyright violation, and misrepresentation of credentials (Stander, 2020). I will avoid plagiarism by utilizing tools including SafeAssign and Grammarly. I will also avoid unintentional paraphrasing by ensuring that I have sufficiently paraphrased other authors’ work to avoid having my essay being too similar to the original work (Stander, 2020). Besides, I will cite other authors’ work as many times as I have used their ideas. Furthermore, I will insert a citation having the author’s name, publication year, and the page number after the paraphrased text.

As a practicing nurse, I will uphold integrity by following the nurses’ code of conduct to ensure professionalism. I will also treat my fellow nurses with respect and dignity regardless of their years of experience, professional qualifications, and personal characteristics (Poorchangizi et al., 2019). Furthermore, I will maintain ethics by upholding the ethical principles of beneficence, nonmaleficence, autonomy, and justice in my practice. For instance, I will ensure that interventions implemented on patients will benefit them rather than causing harm (Poorchangizi et al., 2019). I will also ensure that patients are involved in their care, and their treatment decisions are considered when planning treatment.   Conclusion

Academic integrity refers to the commitment, honesty, and moral behavior that scholars are expected to demonstrate in academic work. Students are required to acknowledge other authors’ work when writing their essays and research to demonstrate integrity. Professional practices refer to the conduct considered appropriate for members of a particular profession. A scholar should act by this professional conduct as a way of upholding to scholarly ethics. Grammarly and SafeAssign, promotes academic integrity through features that allow students check for plagiarism in their essays. Besides, paraphrasing enables students interpret others’ ideas in their writing, thus avoiding plagiarism.
