NURS 6003 Part 1: Developing an Academic and Professional Network
Week 1 | Part 1: My Academic and Professional Network
When joining college, nursing students are usually gray in many areas, and professional knowledge develops as they learn concepts in their respective fields and network with peers. For nurses to complete their programs successfully, academic and professional support is essential. This support is enhanced by collaborating inter-professionally. Interprofessional collaboration is vital in nursing since it provides nurses with platforms for social and professional interaction as they work in teams (Moss et al., 2016). It is a way to share knowledge and resources.
Networking opens a broader sphere of influence. According to Goolsby and Knestrick (2017), professional networking is an element that enables nurses to communicate with others with shared interests and expertise. It creates relationships that support new opportunities. Khanum et al. (2016) further mentioned that interdisciplinary networking provides nurses with contacts for personal development and establishing contacts that make them better patient care providers. This section of my plan describes the academic and professional resources that I believe will be instrumental in my nursing program.

Why I selected this individual and/or team and how they will support my success in the MSN program and as a practicing nurse:
Notes: When pursuing any professional program in a learning institution, it is crucial to look for people who can guide when academic matters are not progressing as expected. They are the people to consult due to their in-depth experience about the practice and educational issues. Dr. Ouzts is well-conversant with Walden University’s academic structure and how the nursing environment operates, having taught in the university for about a decade.
She has also taught various courses whose concepts are applicable in many nursing areas and can be consulted on them. They include the role of nurses in population health and preserving health in a diverse society. As a scholar, Dr. Ouzts has written various books and articles, which I will read to improve my experience. NURS 6003 Part 1 Developing an Academic and Professional Network

Why I selected this individual and/or team and how they will support my success in the MSN program and as a practicing nurse:
Notes: Excellence and comfort in nursing depend largely on how nurses team up with their colleagues in the same programs. Under the same program, nurse students handle the same assignments and discuss concepts from different perspectives. MSN colleagues would be vital in discussing issues and overcoming challenges I am likely to experience in the program. The support system we will establish would be critical in forming future networks to enable us to get employment and understand practice requirements and changes occurring every day. I look forward to learning from my colleagues as they learn from me as well.

Why I selected this individual and/or team and how they will support my success in the MSN program and as a practicing nurse:
Notes: As I pursue the MSN program, it is crucial to keep learning from others, particularly those involved in the practice directly. Such individuals are adequately informed on matters happening in practice as situations change and how nursing matters, including illness dynamics, change over time. Through them, nurses get insight into how to utilize their knowledge to address population needs. Due to her broad experience in the health practice as an employee of Johns Hopkins, Dr. Shari Lawson would be crucial in research matters and information on emerging issues and how to prepare well to meet the changing professional demands. She has been actively teaching and administering associate degree, bachelor, and graduate nursing programs for a while. Also, she has published several books on the nursing practice and online nursing education. I chose her due to her vast experience in evidence-based practice, having taught several courses in this area. Lehane et al. (2019) and Chien (2019) noted that nurses implement research findings to improve patient outcomes, the work environment, and the clinical practice through evidence-based practice. As I look forward to gaining more knowledge on my program, I will also be looking for guidance and knowledge to supplement what I will be learning. I believe that Diane Whitehead is among the most suited to guide me in this area.

Why I selected this individual and/or team and how they will support my success in the MSN program and as a practicing nurse:
Notes: As a nurse student or when actively engaged in the nursing profession, nurses need a lot of information about professional demands, ideas of excellence or failure, and changes characterizing the health practice over time. The best people to liaise with are those registered in professional bodies. Since these professional bodies have options for nurse students, it is crucial to register to get a chance to know how the health care industry operates. I look forward to benefiting from representation as I use the professional network to expand my knowledge and access more information and resources to become an excellent and committed nurse.
In conclusion, networking enhances professional knowledge diversely. Although nurses gain a lot of information through classwork, they need to discuss concepts from different perspectives, hence networking with their colleagues. Challenges are part of the practice, and nurses require guidance in many areas. Academic and professional networks are the ideal sources of the required support system.

When was the last time you read Meditation XVII of John Donne’s Devotions Upon Emergent Occasions?
Unless you are a student of seventeeth-century poetry, you may not be all that familiar with this piece. However, you may be much more familiar with one of its well-known phrases: “No man is an island…”.
As you begin your journey toward achieving your academic and professional goals, you have a great opportunity to network with academics and professionals who can help ensure you do not travel alone. This network can help to clarify your own vision for success and can help guide you now and in the future. To paraphrase Donne, no one is an island.
Begin creating an academic and professional network by identifying which academic and professional connections and resources with which you need to collaborate to succeed in your MSN program and as a practicing nurse.

Week 1 | Part 1: My Academic and Professional Network
Nursing students often require both academic and professional support to ensure successful completion of their programs. At Walden University where there are significant numbers of nurses from different backgrounds, consideration of learning support is necessary to ensure effective progression and success. As a nurse student, professional networking leads to the exploration of the entire field of nursing as well as the development of a strong support system within the medical community (Birks et al., 2018).
Professional networking allows nursing students to gain new knowledge and experiences, share ideas, and discover new specialties (MacIntyre et al., 2019). Sharing knowledge is an essential part of the learning process. At Walden University, there are numerous resources that can be utilized by the learners to ensure effective learning outcomes. These resources may include academic professionals, fellow learners, healthcare professionals, and the educators. The purpose of this section is therefore to explore the above academic and professional resources and their role in my academic journey.

SAMPLE DISCUSSION
Professional Network in Nursing
Professional networking is a type of social linkage that focuses entirely on the development of relationships and interaction processes among nurses and medical professionals. One can build a network by engaging in seminars and conferences, attending interviews with other specialists in higher positions in the field of healthcare. Also, building a strong network may require a nurse to work as a volunteer in the nursing-related nonprofit institutions. In-person networking usually yields more productive and intimate relationships. Generally, professional networking creates a great opportunity for nurses to acquire experience and knowledge concerning diverse medical practices and in so doing, through their skills, professionalism and competency, they can attract the attention of the employers (Nursing.Org, 2019). Further, professional networking works perfectively for startups who want to join different working environments. NURS 6003 Part 1 Developing an Academic and Professional Network
All through, nurses and medical professionals ought to remain at the forefront of breakthroughs in care delivery and healthcare technology. Therefore, constantly updating one’s competency requires dynamic networking. Both the institutional and one-on-one networking may enable an individual to develop knowledge and skills that are needed to keep up with the constantly changing medical profession (Nursing.Org, 2019). To ensure the advancement in nursing practices and general care delivery, different medical institutions usually organize networking events that enable doctors and nurses to expand their professional networks. Major events hosted by prominent healthcare organizations often involve qualified professionals who dispense their knowledge and experiences to the junior staff.

The vision and mission of the school Walden University envision a distinctively different 21st-century learning community where knowledge is judged worthy to the degree that it can be applied by its graduates to the immediate solutions of critical societal challenges, thereby advancing the greater global good (Walden University, 2018). This will help you in achieving your goals of fighting mental health disorders. In addition, the level of stigmatization on those with mental health disorders is becoming alarming every day, even in the developed world. In Africa, where I came from, the older age group with dementia is labeled a “witch” simply because she/he has amnesia. Moreover, there is a strong relationship between spirituality and mental health disorder in developing countries. This is one reason why I choose mental health as a specialty so that I can go back to my community and educate them about mental health disorders. Thank you for sharing this with us and I look forward in learning from you.

Week 1 | Part 1: My Academic and Professional Network
Nursing is among the professions where a student requires an intrinsic desire to pursue. It deals with everyday health challenges. A nurse must be naturally passionate about the profession to deliver care while handling problems beyond other people’s abilities. It is crucial to remember that a person requires support from the school, colleagues, and professionals in various fields. As I interact with colleagues, they will also learn from my perspectives as we share ideas. This linkup enhances inter-professional collaboration, which helps nurses work together with other health practitioners to deliver the highest quality care possible (Bosch & Mansell, 2015). Indeed, many resources and strategies are available to enable a nurse to grow in practice, develop as a professional, and specialize in an area of choice. This template describes the resources and strategies I intend to use to achieve my program objectives.

Why I selected this individual and/or team and how they will support my success in the MSN program and as a practicing nurse:
Notes: Whether a person is a student or an acting professional, it is crucial to know how the practice is performing. Nurses also need to come together and approach issues and everyday challenges with a common mindset. Registration in professional bodies such as ANA is beneficial for a growing nurse. It is an opportunity to learn through certifications. In this regard, collaborating with ANA members will offer a huge opportunity to know how the entire industry operates and the benefits of representation and advocacy.
In conclusion, professional growth is multifaceted. A significant proportion of knowledge is gained in classwork, but there is a lot a nurse student learns outside the class. One way to enhance professional growth is to collaborate with academic and professional colleagues and consulting with those experienced in practice. I hope to learn a lot from the selected team, and I am optimistic that I have made the right choice.
In this discussion board, I will introduce myself, discuss how Walden University’s foundation relates to my professional and academic goals, and the importance of networking.
My name is Stephanie Adames and I have been a nurse for 5 years. The only specialty I’ve worked in is ICU and I am so passionate about it that I have never been curious to try other specialties. I live in New Jersey, am recently married, and a new homeowner. My parents were both born and raised in Cuba, therefore Spanish is my first language. With my free time I enjoy bike riding with my husband at different parks throughout NJ. After COVID hit, I started to realize people in the community lack substantial education on their health problems and are unaware of the importance of staying healthy. I want to make a change by being a provider who takes the time to educate people and make them are aware of their health.
After several months of researching, I came across Walden University. Immediately what drew me in was the flexibility of classes being online and how everything is at the students’ pace. The part of Walden University’s vision statement that sticks out to me is “recognition as a preeminent 21st-century school of nursing,” (Walden University, n.d.). This vision statement encompasses my ideal learning environment as I proceed in my schooling with Walden. In today’s society, social media is huge in regards to networking (Wofford, P. 2018). Therefore, I will build my network with colleagues through social media and discussion posts. In regards to Walden’s mission statement, what stood out the most to me was “abilities to select and implement evidence-based practices, and core and specialty nursing knowledge in order to transform society,” (Walden University, n.d.). Walden’s mission statement and MSN learning outcome relate to my professional and academic goals because I will graduate with enough knowledge to be able to transform society with evidence-based practices and skills within the Hispanic communities.
I believe in order to be successful in any career, one must have a good foundation and have the ability to network. The videos produced by Laureate Education (2018), talk about a foundation being built off of many things such as collaboration and relationships. Being a nurse for 5 years I’ve built many relationships and met many professional mentors along the way who have inspired me to go back to school to be a nurse practitioner. To be able to succeed “it takes a village” as per Laureate Education (2018), therefore in order to succeed you need help from others. In other words, you take knowledge and advice from people who’ve been in your shoes to better yourself professionally.
In conclusion, I look forward to continuing my education, graduating, and making changes in Hispanic communities.

WEEK 1 DQ 1 PEER RESPONSE
I enjoyed reading your introduction post. First off, congratulations on your graduation and the drive to pursue further studies. It is also remarkable that you are trying to set an example for your children about the importance of education. Learning is a life-long journey, and there is no limit to it as each day we learn something new that in some way improves our lives or personalities. I liked how you outlined your goals and visions and how they align with those of the University.
I am confident that you will highly benefit from what the courses have to offer. It is also commendable that you decided to pursue education concerning stigmatization and societal intolerance towards people with behavioral disorders. I agree with you that mental health has been a societal issue that needs to be addressed and given more attention. Many people are battling depression, anxiety, trauma, and other cognitive and behavioral problems, especially now that there is a pandemic and they do not get the support they need (Pike, 2018).
To gain knowledge and skills that will help us make positive changes in our communities, we need to network. Professional networking helps us achieve our professional goals and offer a support system where colleagues and experts can share and learn from one another (Echevarria, 2018). Another way you can use to network is by attending nursing events such as seminars/conferences and other meetings. Here, one can meet various people and peers with vast experiences and knowledge. Through talking, exchange of emails, LinkedIn pages, and business cards, professionals improve themselves and can help their patients in some way with those contacts (Drake, 2017). I have also found elevator pitches to be very useful in networking. They are usually brief and give a complete array of interests, skills, and achievements to draw peers with the same interests (Drake, 2017).

My journey as a nurse has been full of learning moments over the past 3 years, I have become very interested in patients requiring mental health evaluations. I’ve been part of the healthcare system of the Department of Veteran Affairs for 3 years. My personal and professional goal is been part of the specialty clinic of Mental Health and suicide prevention as a nurse practitioner. To accomplish this goal, I have to be prepared field, and advance my practice as a nurse practitioner.
Public service is my passion and I will be fulfilling my duty to my country providing the best of my knowledge. I consider Walden University has the right approach and experience to help me provide a state-of-the-art graduate education. My busy schedule with 12-hr. shift plus family was one of the reason I decided to continue my education online. According to the Walden University (2011a) the vision to transform nurses so that they can help the community goes along with my desire to make a better healthcare system. The SON also mention that this program is academically rigorous and contextual relevant. Walden University 2011a, para4). With the faculty and resources they provide, this journey will be one of sacrifices that at the end will put all nurses and the faculty better professionals and at the end the community will benefit of the outcome.
Incorporation of social change
As the Walden university defined positive social change ‘’a deliberate process of creating and applying ideas, strategies and action to promote the worth dignity and development of individuals, communities, organizations, institutions, cultures and societies’’ My passion is with the community and public service specially the veteran’s community. A very special community that requires psychiatric and mental evaluation. Suicide rate among veterans is a very high one. Every year 20 veterans unfortunately commit suicide. With the opportunity of becoming a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner I will contribute and excel the already modernize veterans’ health system.

With the opportunity of becoming a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner I will contribute and excel the already modernize veterans health system.
Why I selected this individual and/or team and how they will support my success in the MSN program and as a practicing nurse:
I selected Dr. Williams because she is currently the Program Coordinator of the Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner Program at Walden University. She has more than 20 years of experience practicing nursing and advanced practice nursing and over 10 years of teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels (Walden University, 2020). Dr. Williams is known for her sincere passion for teaching and mentoring. Thus, she will be an ideal mentor since I am in the Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner Program.
It will be essential to approach Dr. Williams and express my interest in Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nursing. I will also request her to guide me throughout the program to gain the knowledge and attitude needed for a Adult-Gerontology Primary Care NP.
