The idea behind my research project is to create a community education program focused on stroke risk factor prevention. It is critical to collect evidence and assess how each new program might improve patient outcomes, health policies, services, and programs in order to promote accountability for each new program (DeNisco & Barker, 2016). When obtaining proof for any endeavor, it is critical to understand the various research modalities and degrees of evidence (Glasofer &Townsend, 2019). The strength of the evidence is determined by three critical factors: quality, quantity, and consistency (Glasofer &Townsend, 2019). A high-quality study with reliable findings that are not biased or happen by chance should be used when selecting research for any issue (art). The number of studies on a given topic, their size and population, and the efficacy of treatments all contribute to quantity (Glasofer &Townsend, 2019). Consistency occurs when similar findings are discovered in a number of different studies (Glasofer &Townsend, 2019).

Normally, when selecting research for a topic, I would select subjects at the top of the evidence hierarchy.

DQ Review the concepts for the evidence-based practice project you mentioned in Topic 5 DQ 1.

RCT, a systematic review of an RCT, and a metanalysis of an RCT are these (Glasofer &Townsend, 2019). I would probably think about combining quantitative and qualitative research for this topic. Understanding how behavior affects changing health behaviors is crucial when working with prevention strategies, which is why it’s crucial to study both qualitative and quantitative studies.

Purpose of Applying Nursing Theory to Patient Care

Nurses provide care to patients based on certain guidelines and directions that emanate from existing nursing theories. Theory-based nursing offers a host of benefits for patients and the profession like allowing nurses to articulate what they will do to help patients and reasons behind these interventions. Theories consists of concepts, perspectives, propositions, and hypotheses used by different professionals to perform their functions and deliver services (Gunawan et al., 2022). A nursing theory contains concepts, definitions, relationships and propositions emanating from nursing models and other disciplines which project purposive, systematic view of phenomenon through designing certain links among ideas with a view of describing, explaining, prescribing and even predicting outcomes.

The purpose of using nursing theory in patient care is to improve quality of care and have certain directions on how to provide interventions to attain better outcomes. Nursing theories offer foundational knowledge that allows nurses to care for patients by guiding their actions and decisions (AliSher et al., 2019). The theoretical perspectives create guidelines for specific and broad nursing practices for a patient’s benefit. Nurses use theories to base their intervention upon evaluation of their evidence. They also provide nurses with the rationale to make effective decisions. Nursing theories are fundamental to nurses as they equip them with information and knowledge and allow them to develop effective communication as well as interactions with their patients in practice settings (Raile, 2018). For instance, Orem’s nursing system model assists nurses in determining how patients and providers can meet self-care needs while Nightingale’s environment theory demonstrates the effects of one’s setting or surrounding on their quality of care.

Nursing Theory in Current Practice

Before the development of nursing theories, nursing was not considered as a profession but a mere task-oriented occupation. Consequently, individual physicians trained their nurses. However, nursing theory is relevant to the current practice as it serves as the foundation of the profession. Nursing theory is important to the current practice since it helps nurses to understand their purpose, their mission and roles in the healthcare system (Raile, 2018). For instance, Watson’s human caring model emphasizes the need for nurses to integrate different aspects of care to attain healing. Nurses use theories like Orem’s model to empower patients and even populations to take control of their health.

Nursing theory directs nursing research and education, training and practice. Through research and education, nurses have formulated nursing theories to improve care provision and the nursing practice (Raile, 2018). Nursing theory plays a critical role patient care as illustrated by the development of the nursing process. The nursing process evolved through a theory developed by Lydia Hall in 1955. The process entailed observation, administration and validation. The development of this process led to updates by professional entities like the American Nurses Association (ANA). Today, the nursing process is used universally as a management approach with five steps; assessment, diagnosis, nursing goals or desired outcomes, intervention, implementation and evaluation. The implication is that nursing theory is very relevant to care provision today.

Application of a Nursing Theory before Planning and Provision of Care

Nursing theories do no only focus on planed care provision in current practice. These models are essential in promoting primary care in healthcare settings and practices. Before planning and offering care in the present practice, nurses use theories to interpret different contexts of dealing with patients. For instance, nurses use theories to develop possible care interventions when they have patients with certain conditions and peculiarities. A nursing theory can be used to formulate a standardized care management plan based on the five stages identified earlier. Nurses can also use these theories to help patients and individuals in communities to supplement their efforts and focus on primary care interventions (Younas & Quennell, 2019). Orem’s self-care model helps nurses to plan ways of assisting patients to have increased control over their health through education and awareness activities and provision of a better environment to enhance personal development.

Theory Reflecting Personal View on Nursing

Nursing theories allow nurses to establish best practices and predict possible clinical issues and ways to manage them. The nursing theory that reflects my personal view about the essence of nursing is the human caring theory by Jean Watson. According to Watson, nursing entails humanistic aspects intertwined in scientific knowledge and nursing practice. Watson’s theory contends that caring reinvigorates life energies and possibilities of one’s capabilities. Caring is the core component of nursing and is mutually benefiting to both patients and nurses (Younas & Quennell, 2019). The theory is helpful in planning and providing care to my patients as it implores me to develop a positive approach in care delivery. The theory emphasizing the need for nurses to share caring moments that transcend their current situation; whether disease or nurse’s occupational roles and responsibilities.

Conclusion

Effective professional writing is essential for nurses to communicate and share findings from their research and interventions to manage patients. The use of nursing theories in nursing is essential as it offers foundational knowledge and approaches to care aspects. The implication is that nurses should use these theoretical models to enhance the provision of care in their settings.

Topic 1: NUR-550 Literature Review – Resubmission

  • Learners submit their Benchmark – Literature Review from NUR-550 for review.
  • Learners will use the articles/research from this assignment to demonstrate support for the final written paper in Topic 8 detailing the evidence-based practice project proposal.

Literature Review

Medication administration errors have a negative impact on patient safety and quality of care, as well as outcomes. Because of complex organizational issues such as high workload and staff shortages, patients are becoming increasingly vulnerable to the effects of medication errors. Medication administration errors result in higher healthcare costs, unintended harm, and a longer hospital stay. Adopting health information technologies such as integrated electronic health records and barcode administration systems can help to prevent or reduce errors. As a result, this section examines the project’s methods as well as the relevant literature.

PICOT Statement

The use of health information technology can such as barcode scanning and electronic dispensation, reduce and prevent the prevalence of medication administration errors (MAEs) among critically ill patients. Their use in healthcare should be considered for patient safety.

PICOT Question for the Evidence-Based Practice Project

Among the critically ill patients (P), does the integration of health information technology (I) compared to conventional medication administration process (C), lead to a reduction in medication administration errors (O) within a period of one year (T)?

Educating nurses on the importance of continuous uninterrupted compressions may help eliminate  or shorten prolonged pauses during resuscitation efforts. In addition, educating nurses about technologies available to help decrease pauses during resuscitation, ultimately improving patient outcomes by increasing perfusion.

This topic is important to continue research being that the American Heart Association has recently emphasized compressions as the first response action for patients in cardiac arrest. Compressions allow for perfusion, giving the patient the best chance for survival. As an Emergency Department nurse it is virtual, the pauses are kept to a minimum and human error is eliminated to the best of our ability. Human errors such as equipment malfunctions, equipment use, and overall knowledge that defibrillation can occur simultaneously during compressions are all factors that can affect a patient’s outcome.

Re: Topic 7 DQ 2

According to Eyler, Et. Al. (2016) by changing public policies we can effectively affect public health. I chose the current policies related to the public health achievement of motor vehicle safety (Eyler, Et. Al, 2016). By looking at the related public strategies to achieve this by requiring safety belts and child safety seats; requiring motorcycle helmets; and programs for decreased drinking and driving (Eyler, Et. Al, 2016).

So, our goal with the population is to make it safer to do one of the most dangerous things that you can do, driving. Let’s start with why to wear a seatbelt as an adult. Millions of adults admit to not wearing a seatbelt, in 2016 almost half of the people who died in a car accident were not wearing a seat belt, motor vehicle accidents are the leading cause of death among Americans aged 1-54, ejection from a vehicle makes it 20x more likely to end in a fatality (Kailee Mills Foundation, 2020). Now on to why we should put our children into safety seats until they properly fit a seat belt. Car accidents are the leading cause of death in children in the US, by just putting a child into a proper safety seat it reduces serious and fatal injuries by up to 80% (Child Passenger Safety, n.d.). If a person riding a motorcycle decides to wear a helmet while riding their risk of head injury is reduced by 69% and risk for death by 42% (Kennedy, 2020). Also riders are twice as likely to have a cervical spine injury when not wearing a helmet (Kennedy, 2020).

RESPOND HERE (150 WORDS, 2 REFERENCES)

Hello Sarah,

I do agree with you that motor vehicle safety is an issue of concern and the policy formulation should be tailored towards enhancing a safer environment for drivers and other road users. The congress has been actively involved in enacting bills on vehicle safety legislation together with the department of transportation (DOT). The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) which has been in existence for almost half a century is mandated to carry out regulatory actions especially on passenger cars (Motor Vehicle Safety: Issues for Congress, n.d.). Some of the safety action policies include seat belt warning systems for the back seats of passenger cars and periodic reauthorization of the surface transportation programs under the Fixing America’s Surface Transportation (FAST) Act. Policies regulating the highway safety are set up by both the state and federal governments (Hughes et al., 2019). The states policies work to regulate drivers and vehicle licensing, build and maintain highways and formulate and enforce traffic rules while the federal government has a responsibility of regulating the motor vehicles designs (Motor Vehicle Safety: Issues for Congress, n.d.).
