NUR 550 Benchmark Assignment -Evidence-Based Practice Project: Literature Review
A significant proportion of children spend a lot of time on screens watching television, gaming, and social interaction, among other ways. Increased screen time increases obesity prevalence since it is associated with too much energy intake and low physical activity (Schwarzfischer et al., 2020). Obesity puts children at risk of diabetes and cardiovascular, physical, and mental health problems. The increased illness burden increases health care costs and nurses’ workload, and evidence-based interventions are necessary. To improve health outcomes and reduce obesity-related problems, nurses can help patients and families to understand the risks of obesity and educate them on the recommended amount of screen time and physical activity. The purpose of this paper is therefore to conduct a literature review based on the PICOT statement below.
PICOT: In children with obesity (P), can educating parents and children on reducing screen time and increasing physical activity (I) compared to no education (C) reduce obesity rates (O) in six months (T)?
When promoting change through EBP projects, nurses must use evidence-based interventions backed by scientific evidence. This evidence is obtained from scholarly sources. After formulating the PICOT question, I searched for scholarly sources from leading nursing databases such as CINAHL, PubMed, Medline, and the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews. Keywords used for the search included: childhood obesity, screen time, physical activity, and education. In each database, articles were further filtered according to the information and publication dates. Articles that explored the role of knowledge improvement, reducing screen time, and parental education to reduce childhood obesity were prioritized. All articles had to be published in the last five years. NUR 550 Benchmark -Evidence-Based Practice Project: Literature Review
The purpose of this assignment is to write a review of the research articles you evaluated in your Topic 5
“Evidence-Based Practice Project: Evaluation of Literature” assignment. If you have been directed by your instructor to select different articles in order to meet the requirements for a literature review or to
better support your evidence-based practice project proposal, complete this step prior to writing your review.
A literature review provides a concise comparison of the literature for the reader and explains how the research demonstrates support for your PICOT. You will use the literature review in this assignment in NUR-590, during which you will write a final paper detailing your evidence-based practice project proposal. NUR 550 Benchmark Assignment-Evidence-Based Practice Project Literature Review
In a paper of 1,250-1,500, select eight of the ten articles you evaluated that demonstrate clear support for your evidence-based practice and complete the following for each article:
1. Introduction – Describe the clinical issue or problem you are addressing. Present your PICOT statement.
2. Search methods – Describe your search strategy and the criteria that you used in choosing and searching for your articles.
3. Synthesis of the literature – For each article, write a paragraph discussing the main components (subjects, methods, key findings) and provide rationale for how the article supports your PICOT.
4. Comparison of articles – Compare the articles (similarities and differences, themes, methods, conclusions, limitations, controversies).
5. Suggestions for future research: Based on your analysis of the literature, discuss identified gaps and which areas require further research.
6. Conclusion – Provide a summary statement of what you found in the literature.
Type 2 diabetes produces ravaging effects on the African-American population due to their genetic predisposition among other factors. A cumulative analysis of relevant articles reveals that the use of health information technologies can improve the adherence to medication by patients with type 2 diabetes. However, there exist weaknesses that threaten the use of the evidence presented in them. They include the lack of utilization of human subjects, study bias, and small sample sizes that cannot be generalized to the larger population. Therefore, addressing the above weaknesses and ensuring that studies that are biased towards African-Americans and the general population needs to occur.
7. Complete the “APA Writing Checklist” to ensure that your paper adheres to APA style and formatting criteria and general guidelines for academic writing. Include the completed checklist as an appendix at the end of your paper.
Refer to the “Evidence-Based Practice Project Proposal – Assignment Overview” document for an overview of the evidence-based practice project proposal assignments.

Topic 7 DQ 1
Identify two major policy issues that affect the current state of health care delivery and population health equity in the United States (may be state or federal). What impact do these population health policies and initiatives have on advanced nursing practice?
Topic 7 DQ 1
Maintaining the desired state of population health and promoting health equity requires a multifaceted approach and creative interventions. A close analysis of the current state of health care delivery in the United States shows that it is not at the optimal level. Also, many inequities prevent the fair distribution of health resources according to people’s needs. Policy interventions play an instrumental role in addressing these problems.
Policy Issues Affecting Health Care Delivery and Population Health Equity
One of the major policy issues with a significant impact on health care delivery and population health equity is employer-provided coverage. According to O’Leary (2021), employer-provided coverage helps create a stronger and healthier workforce, guaranteed health and financial security. Covering more than 183 million Americans, employer-provided coverage offers multiple health plans and supplemental benefits, including dental and vision insurance (Caramenico, 2021). However, the policy affects employees’ decision to accept and stay on their job. The other policy with a significant influence is Medicare Advantage innovation. Medicare Advantage invests in new innovative programs to improve care delivery and lower costs. It is instrumental in reducing health inequities by ensuring that adults over 65 years get comprehensive cover and wellness care without additional costs (Caramenico, 2021). It needs much improvement to connect health and lifestyle better and provide more choices and better health outcomes.
Impacts on Advanced Nursing Practice
Advanced practice nurses have advanced knowledge and skills vital to addressing health care issues and improving health care delivery outcomes. Population health policies and initiatives oblige advanced nursing practice professionals to be in the front line of policy formulation and looking for opportunities to expand the reach of care to all populations. They must promote policies specific to population needs and use their knowledge, influence, and skills to solve policy issues and improve policy-based outcomes at the organization, community, and national levels.

Re: Topic 7 DQ 2
Obesity, or having too much body fat, can be a complex health issue. It can lead to numerous other health conditions including type two diabetes, high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease and stroke. The increasing rates of obesity has led to an epidemic in the United States and globally. In fact, since 1975, the obesity count has nearly tripled (National Institute of Health [NIH], 2021). Obesity has been found to be caused by poor dietary habits and lack of physical activity. Many restaurants cook with a lot of oil and butter, which makes the food delicious. However, Americans, may not be aware of all the fat that is really in the foods at their favorite restaurants. Therefore, we have implemented the food menu labeling law that requires restaurants to list calories and other nutritional information on their menus (U.S. Food & Drug Administration [FDA], 2020). This provides the public knowledge about the food they are intaking so Americans can make informed decisions with their dietary habits.

I agree with you that obesity is one of the major health concerns in the US that is associated with many comorbidities, among them stroke, heart failure, type 2 diabetes and a number of cardiorespiratory conditions (Ward et al., 2019). Over the years, there has been major emphasis to American population to adopt healthy lifestyles. These involves reduced consumption of junk foods, reduced intake of alcohol and cigarrete smoking. Community Health Nurse or Public Health Nurse have continued to experience an expanded role that helps in promoting better health outcomes within the population. The role of the community health nurse covers a broad scope of practice but to a specific group of patients within the community such as in a school setting. They do help in educating the members of the community on health promotion measures and formulation of policies that are meant to enhance quality healthcare, however, the responsibilities vary depending on the health needs of the community at a particular time (National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine et al., 2017).

Peer reviewed articles were used in this research. They were obtained from GCU Library. A search criterion was developed for use in the determining the suitable articles that support the PICOT question. The selection of articles for this research was done according to the recommendations by Curtis et al., (2017) in their research. According to them, researchers should utilize knowledge distillation where specific inclusion and exclusion criteria are used in selecting, synthesizing, and translating findings into practice. Therefore, the selection of the articles was based on whether they met the pre-developed inclusion and exclusion criteria. One of the aspects that were taken into consideration in the selection of the articles was the language used. The articles must have been written in English language. The other criteria were that the articles must have focused on the use of health information technologies in improving the management of type 2 diabetes. The third criterion was the year of publication of the articles. The articles must have been published with thin the last five years. The obtained articles that did not meet the above criteria were excluded for use in this review of literature.
