Nursing informatics knowledge is required for advanced registered nurses, particularly those who assume leadership roles in their care setting. Thanks to nursing informatics, nurses can now analyze data to improve patient care, which also assists organizations in adopting new patient care technologies and models. Advanced registered nurse leaders must incorporate informatics into their profession to improve patient outcomes (Yen et al., 2020). Informatics is a critical component of providing high-quality care in healthcare organizations. As a result, this presentation will look at how nursing informatics has evolved into an innovative approach to healthcare delivery for advanced practice nurse leaders.

The presentation aims to introduce nursing informatics, summarize its history, and discuss how the topic has influenced nursing leadership, clinical practice, academics, and independent research. The presentation delves into the impact of government regulations on the fundamentals of health information systems, the role of nurse-led innovation models, and the connections made possible by informatics development. The lecture also covers the use of informatics to improve the quality of patient care. The lecture also shows how a nurse can use informatics in their practice to improve patient care by assisting with the transformation of health care data.
Nursing informatics is a profession that blends nursing science with other information and analytical sciences with the purpose of locating, defining, managing, and sharing information, data, knowledge, and wisdom in nursing practice, according to the American Nurses Association (ANA). Nursing informatics is suggested to be critical to healthcare. A bachelor’s degree in nursing is the minimum prerequisite for anyone interested in entering the speciality (BSN). Advanced practice nurses seeking leadership positions, on the other hand, should be certified and hold a master’s degree. They should have knowledge, good technical skills, and project management competence in addition to leadership experience (Kelley, 2019). Nursing informatics specialists are translators who have grown into health technology innovators to improve overall care quality.

Re: Topic 7 DQ 1

Advanced practice nurse educators possess the ability to develop current, applicable nursing curricula and teach this information to adult student nurses to provide knowledge and skills to pass the NCLEX exam to enter the nursing profession. Informatics coordinates patient care data to provide all pertinent information required for patient care, leading to improved outcomes (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2018). Nurse educators may be responsible for teaching student nurses or newly hired nurse how to use the electronic health record (EHR). The government created incentives for health care providers to adopt the use of the EHR in the health care setting by 2015 through the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) with increased reimbursement (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2018). The EHR adoption must have the components of “meaningful use”. Meaningful use of the EHR signifies the ability to gather and share data, clinical process usage, health information exchange, improved patient outcomes (individuals and populations), and the patient utilizes computerized tools to manage their own health (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2018). The American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) provides certification for nursing informatics (American Health Information Management Association [AHIMA], 2021). The aim is to have competent individuals who assist with providing reliable, accurate, complete, accessible, and private health care data. Information Governance is the manner in which health care organizations handle health care information in a secure, legal, efficient, and effective manner. AHIMAs website provides education on Information Governance (AHIMA, 2021).

Hello Camille,

I do agree with you that the nurse informaticist provide synchronized and well-coordinated data that is crucial to the provision of quality and timely care to patients. The concept of nurse informatics has gained popularity in the 21st century healthcare systems as the integration of information and technology has become the core pillars of quality care (Khezri & Abdekhoda, 2019). It is imperative to have the nursing curriculum to have elaborate and well-structured curricula that will guide the nurse students through proper incorporation of technology in patient care. The curricula should be clear on essentials of data collection, recording and handling (Forman et al., 2020). Incorporation of electronic health records (EHRs) and the Electronic Medical Records (EMRs) are crucial to managing patient information efficiently and utilizing it through the care process. These calls upon the nurses to work in collaboration with the nurse informaticist in order to clearly interpret the data and give accurate and timely care. According to the American Health Information Management Association, the use of well documented patient records and data helps reduce duplication of tasks, reduces cost and promotes efficiency of care.

Re: Topic 5 DQ 1

Envision Healthcare’s evolution Health program aims to improve the home care experience for patients who have recently been discharged from the hospital. According to Evolution Health’s mission statement, they “focus on hiring compassionate, highly experienced clinicians and providing them with evidence-based clinical protocols, resulting in better outcomes, fewer re-hospitalizations, and higher patient satisfaction” (Evolution Health, 2020). This organization takes pride in collaborating with hospitals and patients’ primary care providers to provide the best home care possible to their patients. Patients with high-risk Medicare may benefit from lower 30-day re-admission rates as a result of this collaboration (Roepers et al, 2017). This innovative model has an advantage because all team members collaborate for the benefit of the patients.

Hello LaShionna,

I do agree with you that the Evolution Health promotes multidisciplinary teams’ approach and collaboration among its staff, patients and home-based primary care providers. The utilization of home-based care providers in collaboration with clinicians and nurses has proved to be cost effective in terms of reduced rate of readmission hence create more space at the facility for patients who are in critical conditions and require highly specialized care. The use of MDT collaboration has reported higher success rates in the oncology departments specializing in head and neck cancers. The MDT comprises of ENT (Ear, Nose and Throat), maxillofacial surgeons, medical oncologists and radiologists (Taberna et al., 2020). I do agree with you that the organizational capacity to incorporate telemedicine into its daily operations have promotes the collaboration and increased the scope of healthcare. The use of telemedicine has proved to be the best option in the wake of Covid-19 pandemic hence reduces chances of spread of the infectious diseases and also eliminates the chances of one contracting hospitalization related infections (Kichloo et al., 2020).

Topic 5 DQ 2

Explain the role of the nurse leaders in implementing innovative care models. Explain how innovative modes of care affect collaboration between advanced registered nurses and other stakeholders in the industry

Registered nurses, as innovators, are change agents who drive processes and policies, helping to improve healthcare. With innovative care models, there are questions to consider; does the innovation fit? What is innovation? Does it further the goals of the company? Is it compatible with our organization? (Registered Nurses Leading Innovative Changes | OJIN: The Online Journal of Issues in Nursing, n.d.) Once an idea is thought of, it is put into motion, where it is later evaluated on its progress. Nurse leaders have the responsibility to promote this change, explaining all the benefits of adding this change. These innovative care models offer opportunities for nurses to work in new and innovative ways, helping to impact health initiatives. Nurses are on the frontline, observing if these changes are having positive effects. With the frontline workers of nurses, they can report back to advanced registered nurses, administrators, stakeholders, and healthcare officials if the idea is worth implementing in other healthcare facilities.
