Title: NUR 514 Leadership Style Reflective Essay Assignment

Leadership skills are considered important in management as it helps individuals achieve personal and professional success in an organization. Even though people tend to have different leadership skills, it is important to take into account leadership styles that befit a given set of an organization to improve the quality of management (Parush & Koivunen, 2014).

Often, inculcating effective leadership styles requires one to undertake self-reflection to learn about different approaches that will guide in making decisions. However, based on the trait theory of leadership, the ability to lead a team is a concept that one can acquire and develop throughout time. Guided by this argument, I will use self-assessment tools to assess my leadership strengths. I will avail results of the self-assessment tests and provide a brief explanation of areas for improvement to develop my future leadership styles.

Selected Self-Assessments and the Results

Emotional intelligence assessment is the first option to gauge my ability to lead. The self-awareness test is based on the analysis of emotions and how they influence our interactions with people. Emotions determine how a leader manages anger issues and also helps one to solve conflicts among subjects (Presbitero, 2017). Emotional intelligence also explores the ability of a person to communicate effectively with members of a team and therefore is considered one of the vital skills in leadership.

Based on the test undertaken, my emotional intelligence results are 120 and this reveals that I am flawless. In other words, I follow perfection in achieving the outcomes of a given task. I also strive to ensure that activities are done as per the plan and also try as much as possible to avoid mistakes in doing my work.

The second self-assessment test taken involves a personality assessment. This assessment focuses on the analysis of traits of an individual to ascertain whether a person is fit for leadership or can settle as a subject to be led by others. According to leadership theories, people can have inherent traits that give them a competitive edge of others (Nanjundeswaraswamy & Swamy, 2014). Personality traits like confidence can make one stand out to be a good leader especially in situations where tough decisions are to be made.

As per the test undertaken, my personality assessment tests indicate that I am an advocate. In essence, I tend to evaluate the circumstances before making a judgment. I also use intuition to direct mental energy in solving pertinent issues that arise in the current place of work. My identity reveals that I am confident when making decisions in the organization.

The third self-awareness test selected was a value assessment. The evaluation approach provides a brief description of the motivation of a person. The assessment is vital as it determines the behavior of a person based on what one considers as more important in life (Sutherland & Jelinek, 2015).

As per the tests on value assessment, my results indicate a high score for instrumental values. The premise means that I use logic, intellect, and self-control when making a judgment in the health facility. I am also ambitions, honest, courageous and forgiving when working with colleagues.

Leadership Style that aligns to Philosophy of Care

Flawless as a result of my emotional intelligence test closely aligns with my philosophy of care. The approach focuses on perfection and yielding positive results. Flawless trait encourages people to do good by following the clearly developed standards of procedure in an organization (Tuleja, 2014). With this, limited conflicts related to insubordination and neglect of duties are avoided. Besides, flawless trait strengthens the working of a given system as it requires people to work as per the stipulated protocols.

Incorporating Elements of Flawless Trait during Practice of Leadership

Even though human beings may not achieve 100% perfection, the flawless trait will enable me to motivate my team to achieve the best as per their abilities. Often, clinical practice requires utmost accuracy by using the available clinical guidelines to optimize quality care to patients (Sutherland & Jelinek, 2015). With the flawless trait, I will motivate my team to be accurate in using the recommended practice of care to avoid errors in clinical procedures related to negligence (Nanjundeswaraswamy & Swamy, 2014).

The style will also help me to organize shift hours among the health care team. Through this approach, shift hours will be equitably distributed to limit burnout due to unbalanced distribution of duties. I believe this will foster positive interactions among the healthcare staff and enhance cooperation among the team as they strive to provide quality services to patients (Parush & Koivunen, 2014).

Areas for Improvement

Through the self-assessment tests, I realize that I need to improve my personality. Particularly, I need to develop an identity of being assertive and confident, especially when making tough decisions that support the life of patients (Tuleja, 2014). Besides, I need to improve my tactics in dealing with colleagues at work.

I tend to use negative judgment towards health staff who are not perfect in their work and this often compromises the effectiveness of my leadership (Presbitero, 2017). I also have the challenge of using intuition to make a judgment in all situations within the health setting. I believe that some situations require observation rather than intuition to solve and therefore I purpose to be more observant when dealing with health staff.

Conclusion

The effectiveness of a leader depends on the personality traits that they possess. The assessment revealed the personality traits that I possess while also showing the areas that need improvements. The assessment conducted herein therefore allows me to know that kind of a leader that I am and what I can do to improve.

Nursing leaders use different approaches to influence policies, decisions, and patient care outcomes. Concerning my philosophy of care, health professionals should prioritize patient needs and ensure adequate resources and preparedness to respond effectively. Accordingly, the primary purpose of nursing is to address patient needs through active interactions, support, and empathy. The servant leadership style aligns with my care philosophy since it emphasizes serving others. As Canavesi and Minelli (2022) stated, servant leaders put others’ needs first, implying they do not prioritize their concerns. Such an approach is crucial for patient-centered care, where the treatment plans are tailored to address the patient’s specific needs.

Prioritizing others’ needs appeals to me the most about servant leadership. The implication is that servant leaders are determined to explore others’ needs and ensure their interests do not prevent them from achieving the desired organizational goals. The other encouraging attribute of servant leadership is such leaders’ commitment to the growth of their followers. Servant leaders prioritize their followers’ growth, well-being, and empowerment to foster an inclusive workplace (Thao & Kang, 2020). Inclusivity and a desire to cooperate with colleagues are vital in care coordination and for successful interdisciplinary care.

3. Reflect on how you might incorporate elements of that particular style as you exercise leadership in a practice or health care organization setting.
4. Discuss any particular areas for improvement the assessments helped you identify and some steps for improving your leadership capabilities.
5. Analyze the characteristics of an effective professional nurse leader, or individuals in nursing leadership. Discuss the characteristics and explain why they are effective for leadership in nursing.
6. Analyze different leadership theories and leadership styles. Select one theory and leadership style, different from your own, and explain how they each support a professional nurse leader or individual in nursing leadership. Consider how the theory shapes the nurse leader in such things as collaboration, conflict resolution, decision making, and negotiation.

Topic 2 DQ 1

Description

Differentiate between “leading” and “managing.” Based on your experience in the health care industry, explain how an advanced registered nurse can lead well and provide management. Share at least one strategy you have used to effectively lead and manage staff within health care organizations Consider interactions with patients, team members, daily tasks, and responsibilities as you formulate your response.

Topic 2 DQ1

The diverse nature of individuals in the healthcare department who undertake various roles to ensure patients get the desired outcomes means that group leadership and management are key. The implication is that the healthcare setting has both leaders and managers who ensure that the organization’s mission, vision, and goals are accomplished and that the patient care outcomes are achieved (Bergstedt & Wei, 2020). Even though managing and leading are, in most cases, used interchangeably, the two have differences. It is important to note that the interchangeable use of the two terms emanates from the fact that the roles of leaders and managers in the healthcare setting often overlap. For example, both work to inspire nurses and other healthcare staff to achieve the set goal.

Leading and managing differ substantially. While managing entails controlling a group of individuals to obtain specific goals, leadership mainly involves inspiring the led people to achieve success as guided by the organization’s goals, mission, and vision (Kakemam et al.,2020). Therefore, it is evident that the difference comes in terms of the intended focus or the approach. Leadership focuses on influence, while managing focuses on controlling a group of individuals to achieve a specific or set goal. An advanced registered nurse should focus or aim toward combining the strengths of leadership and management for better practice and performance.

Advanced registered nurses should practice open communication and honesty to help them lead and manage well. Through such strategies, they will be able to fulfill their obligations and help the organization achieve its goals (Bergstedt & Wei, 2020). The strategies used in leadership and management can be applied in different situations. One strategy I have applied is open communication and taking a keen interest in the staff’s concerns. This helped in improving the staff’s focus, confidence, and commitment.

Topic 2 DQ 2

Description

Discuss potential causes of conflict occurring within health care organizations. What are some principles of negotiation and conflict resolution used by the nurse leader to address conflict? What model or leadership theory would be effective to use in addressing conflict?

System thinking considers the entire system not just the individual. Each organization has a mission and vision, and to be successful everyone within the organization should be focused on achieving the same vision. System thinking begins with self-awareness and clinical reasoning focusing on the goal of patient safety and the good of the organization (Statler & Mota, 2018). As a leader it is imperative to increase awareness of safety, evidence-based practice, and patient-centered care. Utilizing closed-loop communication, building a resolute team, and promoting an interdisciplinary patient-centered care is vital to be a successful leader (Statler & Mota, 2018). By increasing collaboration of the entire system, the leader will benefit positive patient outcomes and the organization’s mission and initiatives.

The idea of system thinking was built upon the Interprofessional Education Collaborative (IPEC) four core competencies. These four competencies focus is on maintaining a climate of respect and values, utilizing the knowledge of the individual’s role to address the need of the patient, effectively communicating with everyone involved, and applying effective team dynamics and values to perform effectively for the overall good of patient and community (Interprofessional Education Collaborative, 2016). As a leader it is imperative that mutual respect and shared values are established to create a positive team environment. It takes the entire interdisciplinary team to provide safe care and create positive patient outcomes. Everyone must know their role, but when respect is present individuals of the team can bring personal insight that could positively affect the care and treatment of the patient or community. Open communication and mutual respect are imperative in the system thinking approach to healthcare. When the organizations vision and mission coincide with their employees’ goals and aspirations positive outcomes for the patients will occur.

Self-awareness is critical in different leadership positions. In most cases, leaders should develop emotional intelligence to deal with various problems in the organization. For the leaders to understand themselves, there is always a need to take different personality tests. The emotional intelligence test is one of the assessments that can enable an individual to adjust their behaviors and adopt new strategies of dealing with people.

Emotional intelligence tests can provide an individual with essential information that can assist with self-development and self-management. Assessments Selected

For the assessment, I selected an emotional intelligence test, personality assessment, and learning style assessment. I selected an emotional intelligence test because I wanted to understand and effectively manage my emotions and of those around me. Sometimes, people feel offended when I interact with them; therefore, emotional intelligence tests would enable me to understand my areas of weaknesses and make appropriate adjustments in an attempt to increase social skills.

The test is critical in knowing the level of my interactive skills and the possible adjustments that can be made to enhance my leadership abilities. The test score for the emotional intelligence test was 70%. From the result, it was indicated that I am reasonably skilled in identifying, perceiving, and expressing emotions for myself and others (Nightingale et al., 2018). From the outcome, my skills in emotional intelligence aid in the processes of understanding others and how they feel. My level of emotional intelligence indicates the ability to understand my feelings and that of others.

From the personality assessment test, the score was 79%, indicating that I am an extrovert, a trait that determines how I relate with people socially. The test also indicated that I am observant and able to make decisions and cope with emotions. The test showed that my feeling for others was 81%. Finally, from the test, the outcome indicated that I have a strong sense of judgment with the score at 72%. For the learning style assessment, the scores were as follows: Aural 5, Visual 2, Reading/writing 3, and Kinesthetic 9. The results indicated that my learning ability relies on experiences, practical exercises, case studies, examples, things that are real, and trial and error.

Description

Welcome to Week 2

This week’s reading will examine characteristics of nurse leaders, analyze different theories and styles of leadership, and explore the nurse leaders’ role in influencing and developing organizational culture. As discussed in this week’s reading, nurse leaders must understand the challenges in health care, implement evidenced-based leadership into clinical practice, and transform health care through innovation.

There are several different approaches to leadership. Transformational leadership is the process in which leaders and followers motivate each other to attain and achieve levels of success. Servant leadership is the concept that leaders focus on the growth and well-being of people and the communities they serve.

The servant leader shares power and places the needs of others first while assisting people to develop and perform to the highest standards possible. Principles of successful leadership include a commitment to excellence, building a culture around service, mold future leaders, focus of employee satisfaction, encourage individual accountability, and recognize and reward success.

This week’s writing assignment focuses on self-awareness and self-assessment. Self‐awareness is essential for developing leadership skills. Recognizing your own strengths, weaknesses, and values, and understanding emotional intelligence and learning styles can help you to be a more effective nurse leader.

For this assignment, you have the opportunity to take a variety of self‐assessments to learn more about yourself and identify your assets and weaknesses as a leader. This will assist you in discovering how you can improve your own self‐leadership skills. You will be asked to think critically about your results and submit a reflection.

Becoming self-aware is an ongoing process requiring introspection. The more often people practice self-reflection, the more opportunities they have to understand their own behaviors and adapt their approaches to working with other people, which can improve both your own and other’s abilities to meet their professional goals.

Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of them, for it is the Lord your God who goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you. Deuteronomy 31:6 ESV

Re: Topic 2 DQ 2

What differentiates servant leadership from other styles of leadership is the primary focus on the follower first. Most styles of leadership direct their focus first on a mission and second on empowering followers to achieve that mission. Servant leadership directs its focus first on the ability of the individuals to succeed and then on the success of the mission.

Servant leaders help their followers to grow and succeed, which in turn aids in accomplishing the organizational mission. The perception of a servant leader should be one of a courageous steward who holds people accountable for their own good. Servant leaders are those individuals who develop and empower others to reach their highest potential. This speaks directly to the individual potential of the followers rather than the organization.

Servant leadership assumes that if the followers are maximizing their potential, it will directly translate to the potential of the organization and its overall performance. When servant leadership is applied correctly and with proper intentions, an authentic and natural form of reciprocity takes place between the leader and follower, which in turn increases workforce engagement and improves organizational performance (Gandolfi & Stone, 2018).

Servant leadership includes ten characteristics- listening, empathy, healing, awareness, persuasion, conceptualization, foresight, stewardship, commitment to growth of people, and building community (Gandolfi & Stone, 2018). Communication begins with listening. A servant leader hears what others are saying through both verbal and nonverbal communication and reflect upon what they hear to lead a group to its full potential.

Having empathy or understanding and sharing the feelings of followers allow servant leaders to be placed in a position at the level of those followers. Servant leaders are further able to identify the characteristics hat make each individual unique and provide them with the ability to understand how best to support and lead their followers to achieve success in the mission, in this case how the staff nurses respond to their patients’ needs. While the leaders may not always accept the performance or actions of followers, the leader always accept each follower as an individual.

When the servant nurse leader displays a genuine interest in the team and further support through meeting the needs of the team, the quality of care increases within the organization (Thomas, 2018). Listening and empathy displayed by the servant nurse leader to their patients provides for interprofessional communication as the nurse will include the patient and family to identify the patient needs, make decisions regarding the patient’s care, solve problems together, and evaluate the planned treatment.

As a Nurse Manager, I employed servant leadership especially during the annual employee evaluation process. The employee evaluation process simply stated only evaluates if the individual is meeting the expectations of the organization. It lacks personal development features. I created a format that tasked each nurse to assess areas of strengths and opportunities.

Then together we discussed strategies to develop those areas. For example, a nurse with two years of experience felt she was not ‘experienced’ enough to consider growth in the department when viewed alongside nurses with more years of experience. A goal we set together was to attend a preceptor course to then begin first mentoring nursing students and later to precept new hire nurses to the department.

A servant leader is a skilled communicator, a compassionate collaborator, a system thinker, and someone who leads with moral authority. Nursing practice and the vocation of nursing lends itself to the servant leadership model through its dedication of service.

Emotional Intelligence

Emotional Intelligence (El) can be defined as the aptitude to understand and command your own emotions and those of the people surrounding you in a particular environment. I chose this assessment because it is an important personal pillar in the nursing career. This is because, as humans, we relate with others through our emotions, which also affects our work and even personal relations with others (good point).

Our mental health is also understood based on how we express our emotions. After taking my El test which is provided for in this assignment, I scored highly on social skills and motivation. Having scored 7 (seven) on self-awareness and 5 in self-regulation, 8 in motivation, 6 in empathy, 8 in social skills. The importance of understanding this test results is that Emotional Intelligence plays a major role in how a person relates with others, from a position of self-awareness as a skill, which enables one to be analytically reflective. Well done!

In regards to my results and research results about the same subject matter, one can conclude that my self-awareness score of 7 and social skills of 8 are my useful strengths concerning to my work environment, which has to do with people and their service as the core. Due to its nature, it demands an individual to have the ability to be empathic on their client, which I have scored a 6. This is an area of growth for me and a challenge that I must work on to get better at feeling other people’s pain and experiences as my reality. Good work!

Re: Topic 2 DQ 1

Working in the health care industry, the differences I see in management vs leadership are that management for the unit controls the policies and also answers to their bosses in order to stay within budget or hopefully develop plans for safety and better flow of the unit. Leadership roles that I have worked alongside with have been helpful and active in rounding with staff and patients contributing not only to patient satisfaction but research ways for employees to work their best. Of course, both roles are crucial in the structure of healthcare and have their own roles that contribute to quality patient care. It takes strong leaders to make quick and smart decisions but also receiving input from patients and peers.

Advance practice nurses can lead well by setting an example for patient care. APRNs should be active when providing direct care to patients and developing treatment plans. The world is changing, and APRNs must position themselves to be at the table with other disciplines and professionals in order to emphasize the influence of nursing care on the health of individuals or populations (DeNisco & Barker, 2016). Using their leadership skills, APRNS can collaborate with other teams to improve patient safety and successful care. To improve quality, maximize resources, and coordinate care, an interdisciplinary approach to care for patients with complex health needs is best (DeNisco & Barker, 2016).

Leadership Style

In the development of leadership skills, people tend to achieve both their personal and professional success. For instance, nurses ought to develop the leadership skills with developing competence that entails attitudes, combined knowledge in order to provide professional nursing services (Grossman & Valiga, 2016). Therefore, through the competence of self-assessment form, there is a systematic and organized method that helps in identifying one’s learning needs. Additionally, through reflection nurses tend to review their practice and improve their personal skills, knowledge and professional in order to improve their ability in provision of high quality care. The paper addresses the importance of self- assessment and reflection. Emotional intelligence is one of the self-assessments that plays a significant role in leadership.  The type of self-assessment is chosen based on its importance in assisting an individual, for instance nurse leaders in managing their emotions and having the ability to understand their emotions and people around them (Keefer, 2015). Thus, emotional intelligence assessment is essential for success in leadership. This paper is s reflective essay on leadership style with focus on emotional intelligence assessment, personality assessment and learning styles assessments. The paper further examines elements of transformation leadership in a healthcare organization setting and ideal areas of improvement.

My score for the personal leadership test is 60/100. Based on the results it would be ideal to work more on my emotions and have a good understanding of my emotions and how other people feel. Second, the test scores for Personality Assessment affirm that I am a consul. The results further affirm that I am 96% extraverted, 68% observant, 65% feeling, 99% judging and 79% assertive. Based on the results established from the Learning Styles Assessment, my scores for visual, aural, read/write and kinesthetic are 1, 5, 2 and 8 respectively. Therefore, I am a Kinesthetic learner based on the results.

Based on the results indicated above, my leadership style is transformational. Transformational leadership entail setting of clear goals that the organization would need to realize and the setting of strategies that would ensure that such goals are realized. Demonstration of the change, motivation and being the model of change within the organization is part of the transformational process (Montgomery, 2016). Additionally, being a team player, maintain focus on the goals and strategies set and the effective communication and description of the vision of the organization are some of the traits that stand out in the transformational leader. However, there tends to be struggle in gaining trust from the subjects, which is a necessary prerequisite for the accomplishment of the project objectives and goals of the organization. The combination of the aural kinetic learning affirms that there is preference in listening and watching demonstration and such is the basis through which I would pass knowledge within the work context. The results of the personality assessment further affirm that I am strongly extroverted and judging. Such enables me to have ease of interaction with the staff colleagues and facilitate acquisition of new knowledge.

The elements of transformational leadership are essential when exercising leadership in the healthcare organization setting. The transformational leadership process entails the effective involvement of colleagues in the setting of higher standards of care within the facility and working towards the accomplishment of such standards (Brock, et al. 2017). For example, sharing the vision of improvement in patient care and safety through integration of evidence based practices in the routine nursing practices would lead to improved patient satisfaction within the facility. Training the colleagues on the evidence based practice such as hand washing before handling the work practice would lead to reduction in spread of infections within the wards and further improve the patient outcomes within the facility.

The assessments, whose results are outlined in the second paragraph, are essential in determining the ideal areas of improvement. Consequently, there are measures that can be taken up in improving the leadership capabilities. The ideal areas of improvement based on the scores include having better understanding of my emotions and that of other people and being more observant and attentive to the feelings of other people. As such, there is need to ensure that there is improvement in my emotional intelligence. The measures to improve the learning process would entail going for training programs on emotional intelligence (Petrides, et al 2016). Emotional intelligence has teachings on how one could enhance his or her cognitive skills and the aspects such as social skills, self-awareness, self-regulation, empathy and motivation (Raman, Sambasivan & Kumar, 2016). Additionally, having a coach who has been a leader of a healthcare organization would be ideal in acquisition of skills on how to better understand and manage emotions of self and other people in a healthcare setting.

In conclusion, personal assessments are crucial in establishing and understanding of self and the improvements that one would need to make to make his or her leadership style more effective. Some of the assessments include emotional intelligence assessment, personality assessment and learning styles assessments. Based on the results of the assessments, the key shortcomings rests on the need to develop emotional intelligence skills and traits. Being under a personal coach and taking up training programs on emotional intelligence would be ideal in addressing the existent needs.

A Sample Answer 4 For the Assignment: NUR 514 Leadership Style Reflective Essay Assignment

Title: NUR 514 Leadership Style Reflective Essay Assignment

Reflective practice is an important part of the nursing profession and leadership as it allows nurses and their leaders to acquire leadership attributes and understand their style of leadership. Reflection enables nurse leaders and practitioners to learn from their experiences and know weak areas and the need for future improvement (Porter-O’Grady et al., 2019). Reflective practice shows one’s strengths and initiatives that one can take to improve so that one succeeds in their assigned roles, duties, and responsibilities (Barker, 2021). The purpose of this paper is to offer a reflective account of myself based on three different assessment tools that I have taken. The paper also identifies a leadership style that aligns with my care philosophy and highlights elements of the leadership model that I should incorporate as well as areas of improvement. The paper also analyzes the features of an effective professional nurse leader and different leadership theories and styles.

Rationale and Brief Summary of Self-Assessment

Nurse leaders must be self-aware to improve overall care provision as they deal with patients in different areas. consequently, I took three tests that include a personality test, an emotional intelligence test, and a learning style assessment. The rationale for the personality test allows one to ascertain the effect of their personality on the perception of nursing situations and the environment. I wanted to know if my personality has an impact on the decisions that I make in care provision. The personality test revealed that I have a significant percentage of extraversion at about 68% and introversion at 32%. The personality test also showed that my energy is 57% observant and 43% intuitive. The test also showed that I rely on feelings at 68% compared to 32% prospection. The test also showed that my identity is 62% assertive and 38% turbulent.

The emotional intelligence test is critical as it allows nurses and nurse leaders to understand their ability to deal with a host of situations. I wanted to gain insight into my ability to respond to critical moments that require the use of critical thinking and problem-solving abilities. Emotionally intelligent nurse leaders and nurses are effective in their work as they understand the implementation of better interventions to attain quality outcomes and accomplish their tasks. The emotional intelligence test showed that I had 69% implying that I am soundly skilled in the identification, perception, and expression of emotions in others and even myself.

The learning style test was essential as it allows one to understand their ability to learn in a host of environments. Studies show the need for nurses to embrace lifelong learning to transform the healthcare industry by adopting best practices from research and clinical experience as well as patient preferences (Porter-O’Grady et al., 2019). The assessment of my learning style revealed that I had ten in kinesthetic, two in reading and writing, five in aural, and one in zero. The implication is that I learn mainly through observation.

Leadership Style Aligning with my Care Philosophy

Through intense analysis and self-reflection, I have realized that the servant leadership and transformation leadership models are the ones that align with my philosophy of care. Servant leadership means seeking the good of others at the expense of self. Servant leaders focus on improving the welfare of their followers and serving them. Transformational leaders focus on changing the status quo and improving care delivery (Barker, 2021). Therefore, these styles are essential for nurse leaders to impact their subordinates and inspire them to offer quality care.

My philosophy of care entails serving others using the best possible interventions to meet their preferences and conditions. servant and transformational leaders have a strong sense to serve and change their followers while ensuring the best interactions and relationships among members of their teams. These leaders listen, empathize, and uphold integrity as well as values and ethics to attain better patient outcomes. Therefore, these styles are essential in ensuring that I attain the expected patient care outcomes.

Incorporation of Elements of the Leadership Style

One needs to understand their strengths and weaknesses to make an effective leader. The use of these assessments allowed me to understand that I lacked self-reflection, and emotional intelligence and was not aware of my actions and decisions. As an effective leader, the lack of these aspects impairs my ability to offer remedies and solutions to issues in the practice environment and among the team members (Kibbe & Chen, 2019). Therefore, enhancing listening, building communities and effective learning from all members and other stakeholders would be critical in improving my leadership attributes and hence effective delivery of quality care to patients.

Areas of Self-Improvement and Steps to Enhance Leadership Capabilities

Self-awareness requires one to have a better understanding of leadership abilities and capacities. The assessment helped identify certain areas that need improvement. These include communication, the development of the relationship with team members and all stakeholders, as well as being empathetic to situations. The assessments also showed the need to incorporate emotional intelligence in situations that patients and other providers can face in care provision and delivery (Thomas, 2018). The assessment also showed the need for me to improve my personality by developing a more assertive identity through confidence-building, particularly when making decisions that support a patient’s life. I should also improve on how I handle colleagues and avoid being judgmental. More specifically, I should avoid using intuition when making a judgment in health situations. Situations require contingent approaches as opposed to being rigid in decision-making.

Characteristics of Effect Professional Nurse Leader

An effective nurse leader assists in the development of a common or convergent approach to care provision through the use of systems and employees. The nurse coordinates, integrates, and facilitates different services and applications to help patients. Individuals seek meaning in their lives and purpose at work. Effective nurse leader has to constantly reflect on their character and quality of work (Kibbe & Chen, 2019). The sustainability and success of an organization arise from individual and collective responsibility and the performance of all people. The leader must demonstrate openness and transparency to be a valued leader. The leader must be a role model to inspire and motivate their team to perform and be productive. They must show their commitment and engagement with their employees, be transformative, and be observant to avoid any situations that may affect the overall care delivery among the nursing staff members (Barker, 2021). An effective leader should also be reflective, serve the followers, and be transformative to improve the quality of care offered to patients. More importantly, an effective leader must bear the vision and mission of their organization and strategize while advancing the meaning and purpose as well as better welfare of the employees.

Application of Leadership Theory and Style

Different leadership models continue to emerge since the 1930s. However, the transformational leadership style is the most appropriate in modern health settings. The style is the most effective in a health care setting since it is founded on teamwork and focuses on the attainment of a common goal irrespective of individual concepts that may arise. The leadership model embeds honest, open, and effective communication to build positive interpersonal relationships among team members. The style entails team leaders communicating the team vision in a manner to motivate and empower the followers or subordinates (Gandolfi & Stone, 2018). The team leader inspires better loyalty and confidence resulting in increased levels of engagement, achievement, and performance.

The theory shapes the nurse leader to develop a collaborative approach to care delivery and seek consensus when a conflict arises to attain a resolution. It also helps nurse leaders develop better ways to decide on engagement and involvement. The model ensures that leaders can negotiate by inspiring and motivating the team members to be effective and perform better to deliver quality care.

Conclusion

Understanding one’s attributes based on their strengths and weak areas is essential for nurses and nurse leaders. The paper shows that personal assessments based on three different tests are essential for one to develop better leadership attributes and improve on areas that have weaknesses. The implication is that these tests ensure that one can adopt a leadership style and attributes to be better nurses and nurse leaders to offer quality care to patients.
