Rebalancing the system’s resource allocation and the reward value of care is a priority for healthcare institutions. The number of people seeking healthcare services continues to increase daily. Besides, the number of elderly populations has increased tremendously in the recent past. Such patients require regular medical interventions because of their frail body systems. An increase in the number of patients in a healthcare institution requires the addition of other resources including space to accommodate the new number. Therefore, healthcare institutions may be forced to spend more in terms of resource allocation and alignment. However, the institutions should not neglect the need to provide quality care and the best patients’ experience as defined in the quadruple aim. The goal of the organization where I work is to upgrade the nursing units to create an integrated care delivery that promotes quality care. The current study explores the best model of care to adopt and its suitability based on the organization’s internal structure.
The Model of Care
Nursing is an important segment in the healthcare delivery process. Nurses interact directly with the patients and so learn their health needs and develop the best approaches to address them. Besides, nurses must collaborate with other healthcare providers to achieve a continuum and quality care delivery to the patients. Other than interacting with other professionals, the nurses also need to interact positively with one another, having appropriate scheduling and handing over protocols (Swartz, 2017). The experiences and specialty of the nurses tend to vary; therefore, some are well equipped to handle advanced cases while others can only handle basic cases.
Patients must receive the best care and this means that they should be attended to by qualified and experienced nurses. However, the nursing setting should also create room for growth and development so that enough skills are nurtured to offer the best care to the patients and meet the increasing demand for healthcare services. The team nursing model of care will be the most appropriate for the organization. According to Rosen et al. (2018), the team nursing model of care involves a group of nurses working together in a coordinated manner. Also, it provides an opportunity for the junior nurses to learn from the experienced ones.

In team nursing care, the registered nurses work as team leaders and coordinate the activities of the other junior staff in the department. Also, the leader encourages a cooperative environment with the appropriate communication system. The main responsibilities of the leader include planning the care, directing patients’ care and activities, assigning duties to the other nurses, and helping them where necessary (Havaei et al., 2019). The junior nurses in the unit report directly to the nursing leader who then report to the nursing in charge. The success of the model depends mainly on the leaders’ communication and clinical skills.
In large healthcare institutions, it may be difficult for the nurse in charge to control all the activities in the nursing units. Therefore, the team nursing model of care serves as the best approach to promoting quality healthcare delivery and minimal supervision requirements.
Why the Model is Appropriate
The model is the most appropriate for the healthcare institution. Upgrading the nursing units to promote collaboration and service delivery integration means that all the nurses must be equipped to contribute positively to the process. Rosen et al. (2018) posits that communication failure is a major cause of preventable patient harm to the patients. Furthermore, failure to transmit critical information about the patient’s status and care plan could result in delays and inappropriate treatment to the patients. Most of the errors in healthcare delivery also result from the hierarchy because there is no direct and regular consultation between the team leaders and the other junior staff (Swartz, 2017). Therefore, the team nursing model allows frequent communication and consultation with the experienced staff and so makes it easy to clarify and correct errors. Managing a complex working environment requires breaking into tasks and delegating responsibilities. The nursing unit is interdependent and highly complex and that is why the team nursing model serves as the best way to improve the quality of care delivery (Havaei et al., 2019).
The healthcare organization is made of different nursing units. For example, there are male wards, female wards, and emergency units among others. Therefore, the nursing team will be divided into two teams, teams A and B. Each team will have a head nurse, five registered nurses, and approximately 20 nurses working with the registered nurses. Furthermore, each team will have medical assistants. The team will work jointly to ensure that the patients receive high-quality healthcare services (Indra, 2019).
Furthermore, the institution receives patients with different health conditions with some requiring expert care. It may be difficult to have expert care providers attending to all the patients with special health needs alone. However, when they work as a team, the junior members can learn new skills and can handle some cases under the guidance of the registered nurses in the unit (Havaei et al., 2019). The nurses’ leaders will receive reports and ensure that patients are attended to adequately. The team nursing model can be easily adapted to meet the needs of both the patients and the healthcare providers in the nursing unit.
The SMART Goals for the Program Strategy
The SMART goals for the program to be implemented will include:
- Ensure that the patients receive the best care delivery and ensure that they are attended in time and so increase their satisfaction rate by 50% within three months.
- Improve the consultation and collaboration between the nurses and so reduce the mortality cases arising due to the delayed special healthcare delivery due to the busy schedules among the registered nurses by 50% within three months.
- Improve the nursing work satisfaction rate by 70% within three months by creating a unit of family where they can easily share their concerns, challenges, and experiences.
SWOT Analysis
Strengths
The healthcare organization environment is supportive of the selected model of care. The highly skilled clinical staff will work with the junior nurses to ensure high-quality care delivery to the patients. Furthermore, the nurses in the organizations have a strong ethos of transparency, connectedness, and coordination and this makes it possible to develop teams and assign tasks accordingly (Arif, 2018). Besides, the healthcare institution has several support staff who can offer significant input in healthcare delivery. Having such experience, it will be possible for the nurse leader to direct them into quality healthcare delivery.
Weaknesses
The only weakness is that the number of registered in the organization is few and so they may not interact accordingly with the other nurses. The success of the program depends on the integration between the nurse leader and the junior nurses. In addition, the current healthcare system does not encourage specialization considering that the nurses are rotated from one unit to another.
Opportunities
The healthcare organizations have programs that support collaborative operation and so helps in building the culture of teamwork, which is necessary for the team nursing model. Furthermore, the institutions offer regular leadership training and this equips the nursing leaders with the right skills to coordinate the activities under the team nursing model of care.
Threats
The only threat is that the patient’s confidentiality is at stake since the nurses may have to discuss the patients’ issues from time to time. Some patients may feel insecure under such a mode of operation.
Conclusion
Nurses have an important role in the healthcare delivery process; however, the effectiveness of their service delivery depends on the existing model of care. In this case, the team nursing model of care was selected for the healthcare institution. The team nursing model involves a group of nurses and healthcare providers working together under the guidance of the nurse leader. The model creates a room for empowering junior nurses and equipping them with the right skills and experience and so promoting quality healthcare delivery. On the other hand, the effectiveness of the model depends on the internal structure of the healthcare organization. A culture of cooperation and teamwork in the organization is a major strength for promoting the implementation of the team nursing model. On the other hand, while the nurses will be able to address the patients’ needs jointly, there is a risk of patients’ confidentially being breached. However, such issues can be addressed by encouraging the nurses to remain professional.
