The Primary Nursing Model is an example of a nursing model incorporating interdisciplinary care delivery teams. The method started in the 1960s involves patients being assigned to one primary nurse to coordinate and communicate with other team members. Usually, the primary nurse is assisted by associate nurses. The title primary nurse applies on case to case basis, and a primary care nurse for one patient may be an associate nurse for another patient. Also, when using the model, professionals understand that care delivery involves various professionals treating patients, and therefore, they must communicate and coordinate with others for optimal results.

The model also involves delegating duties. Primary nurses may assign roles to associate nurses and nurse assistants. The delegation must be considerate of the assistants’ training and competence. The primary nurses must also supervise care delivery to ensure that involved professional’s exchange information and incorporate evidence in their work. Additionally, the model requires that primary nurses assess patients to know their needs, design teams qualified to meet the various needs, and assign roles based on members’ expertise. The model also involves personalizing people’s responsibilities based on their qualifications and competence.

The model is advantageous to patients because it emphasizes the need for care coordination and communication. The main aim of the primary nurse is to ensure that information exchange is fluid. The nurse also assigns roles to qualified personnel.
