Combining Nurse Leader with Advocacy

Among the major roles of nurse managers is to create a healthy and safe environment that helps engage patients and supports the health care staff. The Nurse Manager Competencies presents the abilities, knowledge, and skills that provide guidance to nurse leaders in their practice. These competencies fall under three domains namely the art of leading people, the ability to create leadership within oneself, and the science of managing the business. Business management entails aspects such as clinical practice knowledge, strategic management, technology, human resource management, financial management, among others. Leadership from within is developed through personal journey disciplines, professional and personal accountability, as well as career planning. According to the American Organization of Nurse Executives (2015), leading people entails the ability to engage in shared decision making, managing relationships and influencing behaviors, working with diverse individuals and teams, and having human resource leadership skills. This reflection paper centers upon using these competencies to identify my weaknesses and strengths, using my leadership skills to help implement change in the workplace, and identifying my leadership growth goals and strategies for accomplishing these goals.

Regarding professional and personal accountability, I have weaknesses and strengths. The first strength is that I am always seeking to provide the best possible service to patients, implying that I have to commit to increasing my education level. I also strive to learn from new and experienced nurses at all times. Similarly, I never justify my mistakes but learn from them. My major weakness in professional and personal accountability is that in my past setbacks, I have blamed circumstances rather than focusing on avoiding mistakes in the future. Regarding career planning, I have been contriving to increase my education level, and I am committed to adapting to different situations in the course of my career. According to Xu (2017), different situations necessitate different leadership styles. I have been learning about emerging trends in nursing practice, and I keep thinking about how my educational background can help me work well in different environments. My other strength is that I am cognizant of job descriptions related to my profession. I have been learning good communication skills, which is important in articulating my strengths. One major weakness in this context is that I have not networked with many professionals in my field, but I plan to do this by joining several professional associations.

With regards to personal journey disciplines, I have a strength in working with multidisciplinary teams to ensure the best patient outcomes and a conducive work environment. I am also very responsive to situations that necessitate change, implying that I consult and guide others when necessary. I am good at applying my programmed knowledge and challenging the decisions made by others. However, I have a weakness in that I sometimes get involved in other people’s opinions that I may take time in making particular decisions. According to Dyess, Sherman, Pratt, and Chiang-Hanisko (2016), sometimes leaders fail to get involved in critical decision making for no important reason. This may result in wrong decisions by new nursing staff. With regards to reflective practice reference tenets or behaviors, I apply several tenets developed by the Center for Learning Leadership. First, I ensure that I am truthful, which is a critical element in the provision of nursing cares. I also embrace diversity and endeavor to discover the potential in myself and others. I always adventure towards knowing and set commitments that I always meet. Nevertheless, I have a major weakness in this area since I take time to evaluate the benefits and risks of various decisions before responding to one of them, which I am in the process of improving.

In advocating for change in my organization, I will use my leadership skill in several ways. First, I will work with professionals in different fields to ensure a smooth transition from one situation to the other. Second, I will ensure that everyone in the organization takes responsibility for their actions rather than blaming others. I will serve as an example to others by exhibiting integrity and ethical behavior in my actions. Finally, I will network with professionals in different healthcare fields, which will enable me to be up-to-date with new developments and trends. This will also help me in developing my leadership skills, which will particularly be critical during crises.

My personal goal for leadership growth is collecting exhaustive information regarding my field so that I can be a reliable leader. Information is critical in my nursing leadership role. In achieving this goal, I will endeavor to read more books, attend conferences or symposiums, work harder throughout my career, and observe and consult professionals with more leadership experience. I will work hard in ameliorating my leadership abilities, including self-confidence and communication skills. I will strive to cultivate and ensure maintenance of a healthy work environment characterized by better organizational performance and patient outcomes. A healthy work environment satisfies, empowers, and guarantees the safety of nursing and other healthcare staff (Moss, Seifert, & O’Sullivan, 2016). I will seek to improve workplace conditions to ensure high retention rates and staff satisfaction. As a leader, I will give staff in the organization a voice to ensure everyone has control over the patient care environment. Finally, I will work hard in improving my emotional intelligence, which is extremely critical in decision making.

In conclusion, nurses particularly in leadership positions ought to ensure that diagnostic and therapeutic procedures result in patient satisfaction and better health outcomes. Nurses should have the ability to communicate about the best course of action to ensure better organizational performance. Nurse leaders need to use leadership skills in their advocacy role. This necessitates combining nursing knowledge and high levels of clinical competence with management and leadership skills developed throughout the career. Thus, the effective nursing role necessitates combining the patient care responsibility with responsible leadership.
